L'\u00e9cu de l'amiral Jones est une r\u00e9compense sportive prestigieuse \u00e0 Halifax depuis plus de 75 ans. Il est d\u00e9cern\u00e9 aux athl\u00e8tes militaires qui contribuent le plus \u00e0 la conduite, \u00e0 l'esprit sportif et au caract\u00e8re des programmes sportifs de la base et de la formation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Au cours de l'hiver 1978, le prix a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9cern\u00e9 \u00e0 une vedette du baseball qui a consacr\u00e9 beaucoup de temps \u00e0 ce sport, tant sur la base que dans la communaut\u00e9. Adjudant \u00e0 l'\u00e9poque, Douglas Wiper \u00e9tait un \u00ab sparker \u00bb, employ\u00e9 \u00e0 la division des communications de l'\u00c9cole navale.<\/span><\/p>\n

Selon les archives du Trident, \u00ab l'adjudant Wiper a une longue histoire d'engagement dans le sport, le d\u00e9veloppement du sport et le service \u00e0 la communaut\u00e9. En 1966, il a commenc\u00e9 sa carri\u00e8re sportive en entra\u00eenant la Mosquito League de baseball \u00e0 Shannon Park. Dans les ann\u00e9es qui ont suivi, il a jou\u00e9 au softball dans des ligues de service, des ligues communautaires et pour les navires du CSM. Il a \u00e9galement entra\u00een\u00e9 la ligue de baseball bantam et le hockey \u00e0 Shannon Park. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

L'article pr\u00e9cise qu'il a \u00e9galement occup\u00e9 plusieurs fonctions au sein des ligues mineures de baseball de Shannon Park et de Dartmouth, qu'il a \u00e9t\u00e9 conseiller sportif pour Shannon Park et qu'il a \u00e9t\u00e9 vice-pr\u00e9sident du conseil communautaire de Shannon Park.<\/span><\/p>\n

En plus du bouclier de l'Amiral Jones, Wiper a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 reconnu par des organisations civiles pour son d\u00e9vouement aux sports dans la communaut\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wiper a pris sa retraite de la marine en 1996 en tant que premier ma\u00eetre de 2e classe et est d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 en octobre 2019 \u00e0 Dartmouth. Sa notice n\u00e9crologique indique qu'il a servi sur \u00ab beaucoup trop de navires pour les mentionner \u00bb et qu'il a m\u00eame eu la chance de naviguer avec ses fils Stacey et Stephen avant sa retraite.<\/span><\/p>\n
