Sa pr\u00e9sentation, qui s'est d\u00e9roul\u00e9e dans une salle comble compos\u00e9e de membres de la BFC Halifax et des FMAR(A), portait sur le racisme anti-noir \u00e0 Halifax aujourd'hui, mais elle comprenait \u00e9galement des \u00e9l\u00e9ments historiques expliquant le d\u00e9veloppement de la race en tant que construction sociale et la progression du racisme en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse. Il a d\u00e9crit les vagues de migration qui ont augment\u00e9 la population noire en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse \u00e0 partir de la fin des ann\u00e9es 1700, jusqu'aux d\u00e9placements forc\u00e9s et autres traitements injustes des Noirs en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse au 20e si\u00e8cle, y compris la tristement c\u00e9l\u00e8bre destruction d'Africville.<\/span>

\n<\/span>Il s'est \u00e9galement pench\u00e9 sur l'exp\u00e9rience des Noirs de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse aujourd'hui, qui comprend les impacts g\u00e9n\u00e9rationnels du racisme menant \u00e0 des taux de ch\u00f4mage et de pauvret\u00e9 \u00e9lev\u00e9s, ainsi qu'\u00e0 un ciblage disproportionn\u00e9 par la police, entre autres. \u00ab Il y a des gens dans la salle qui ont le privil\u00e8ge de participer \u00e0 cette conversation, et si cela devient un peu inconfortable, vous n'aurez plus jamais \u00e0 parler de racisme si vous ne le voulez pas. Je serai engag\u00e9, et je ferai l'exp\u00e9rience du racisme, que cela me plaise ou non \u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n

L'auditoire a \u00e9galement entendu les membres de l'\u00e9quipe de commandement du futur NCSM William Hall, qui ont pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 Symonds et fait le point sur le navire, qui devrait \u00eatre livr\u00e9 \u00e0 la Marine royale canadienne plus tard cette ann\u00e9e.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le navire porte le nom d'un h\u00e9ros de la marine canadienne et du premier Canadien noir \u00e0 recevoir la Croix de Victoria. \u00ab Pour moi, faire partie de l'\u00e9quipage et \u00eatre le Coxn d'un navire nomm\u00e9 en l'honneur d'un tel personnage historique, est un moment de grande fiert\u00e9 pour moi dans ma carri\u00e8re, et j'esp\u00e8re que le navire apportera des moments de fiert\u00e9 pour d'autres N\u00e9o-\u00c9cossais \u00e9galement, en particulier les N\u00e9o-\u00c9cossais noirs. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

L'unit\u00e9 a rencontr\u00e9 des organisations dirig\u00e9es par des Noirs en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse pour obtenir des conseils sur les d\u00e9corations et les souvenirs pour l'int\u00e9rieur du navire. L'espoir est de mettre en valeur William Hall lui-m\u00eame, mais aussi d'identifier d'autres personnes dont l'histoire pourrait \u00eatre mise en valeur \u00e0 bord.<\/span>
