Alors que le NCSM <\/span>Scotian<\/span><\/i> a soulign\u00e9 le Mois du patrimoine africain en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse tout au long du mois de f\u00e9vrier, les marins en ont profit\u00e9 pour c\u00e9l\u00e9brer la carri\u00e8re d\u00e9cor\u00e9e du premier ma\u00eetre de 2e classe Perry Colley, l'ancien capitaine d'armes de notre unit\u00e9, qui a pris sa retraite en 2014. \n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ses 38 ann\u00e9es en tant que ma\u00eetre d'\u00e9quipage l'ont amen\u00e9 \u00e0 parcourir le monde, y compris les tropiques du Cambodge, o\u00f9 en 1992 il a pass\u00e9 six mois en tant que gardien de la paix de l'ONU. Ce travail consistait \u00e0 conduire de petits bateaux pour escorter les observateurs de l'ONU jusqu'aux isoloirs afin qu'ils puissent surveiller les processus d\u00e9mocratiques apr\u00e8s le brutal r\u00e9gime des Khmers rouges dans ce pays. Selon Perry, la vie militaire permet souvent d'acqu\u00e9rir de pr\u00e9cieuses aptitudes \u00e0 la vie quotidienne. Des choses comme se lever t\u00f4t et faire son lit, se faire couper les cheveux, repasser ses uniformes, polir ses bottes et commander son \u00e9quipement. Il conseille \u00e0 toute personne de couleur qui envisage de s'enr\u00f4ler d'\u00eatre consciente des micro-agressions qui existent malheureusement dans toutes les facettes de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 canadienne. Cependant, il encourage \u00e9galement : \u00ab Vous devez \u00eatre conscient, mais le plus important est d'\u00eatre conscient de qui vous \u00eates. Pas seulement dans l'arm\u00e9e, mais partout dans la vie, il faut pers\u00e9v\u00e9rer. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

Parmi les pays o\u00f9 il a voyag\u00e9, il a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que les Bahamas \u00e9taient peut-\u00eatre son pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9, bien que, comme la plupart des marins exp\u00e9riment\u00e9s, il lui soit difficile de r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 cette question. Colley n'est peut-\u00eatre plus premier ma\u00eetre - il passe la plupart de ses journ\u00e9es \u00e0 passer du temps avec sa famille, va \u00e0 l'\u00e9glise et participe \u00e0 des r\u00e9unions au Lion's Club - mais l'impact qu'il a eu pendant son s\u00e9jour dans les Forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes est ind\u00e9niable.
