Deux membres de l'\u00e9quipe des Mariners, anciens et actuels, ont dirig\u00e9 le banc de la BFC Halifax lors des r\u00e9cents championnats r\u00e9gionaux de hockey f\u00e9minin, reconnaissant que l'action sur la glace du tournoi \u00e9tait \u00ab pratiquement hors de nos mains \u00bb, mais confiants dans les capacit\u00e9s de leur \u00e9quipe.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Nous les pr\u00e9parons \u00e0 jouer ; nous les calmons \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 l'entra\u00eeneur-chef, l'adjudant (retrait\u00e9) Charlene Arsenault. \u00ab S'ils commencent \u00e0 paniquer lorsque le match ne va pas dans leur sens, nous les calmons. Elles savent toutes comment jouer au hockey : elles n'ont qu'\u00e0 jouer. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

L'approche d'Arsenault et de l'entra\u00eeneur adjoint, le sergent Roxanne Lacroix, semble avoir fonctionn\u00e9, puisque les Mariners ont remport\u00e9 la m\u00e9daille d'or en finale contre Gagetown.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lacroix, technicienne de laboratoire au Centre des Services de sant\u00e9 des Forces canadiennes (Atlantique), aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 sur la glace avec l'\u00e9quipe en tant qu'athl\u00e8te, mais a pris un r\u00f4le de banc cette saison.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab C'est ma premi\u00e8re ann\u00e9e en tant qu'entra\u00eeneuse \u00bb, dit-elle. Je suis tomb\u00e9e sur Charlene chez Costco plus t\u00f4t dans l'ann\u00e9e et je lui ai dit : \u00ab H\u00e9, Charlene, tu veux \u00eatre entra\u00eeneuse ? \u00bb Je voulais \u00eatre sur la glace et attraper la rondelle \u00e0 la ligne bleue, mais c'\u00e9tait vraiment amusant de regarder l'\u00e9quipe jouer. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

Arsenault est heureuse d'\u00eatre tomb\u00e9e sur Lacroix. Elle a pris sa retraite en 2019 apr\u00e8s 33 ans comme hygi\u00e9niste dentaire militaire, mais a jou\u00e9 avec les Mariners depuis le d\u00e9but du programme de hockey militaire f\u00e9minin en 1999 jusqu'en 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab J'ai grandi \u00e0 l'\u00cele-du-Prince-\u00c9douard, l'un des 16 enfants avec de vieux \u00e9quipements usag\u00e9s et nous marchions jusqu'\u00e0 la patinoire - il n'y avait pas d'\u00e9quipes r\u00e9serv\u00e9es aux filles, et je portais des patins artistiques jusqu'\u00e0 ce que je sois frapp\u00e9e par un palet et que j'attrape les patins de mon fr\u00e8re. \u00c0 l'universit\u00e9, j'ai jou\u00e9 au hockey f\u00e9minin et nous avons affront\u00e9 des \u00e9quipes de ville. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

Arsenault a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 qu'en quittant l'arm\u00e9e, elle n'avait plus de contact avec ses camarades de hockey ni avec la camaraderie qu'elle avait trouv\u00e9e dans ce sport pendant 20 ans. Son retour cette ann\u00e9e en tant qu'entra\u00eeneuse - avec de nouvelles occasions de porter le chapeau, les mitaines et les chaussettes aux couleurs des Mariners, tricot\u00e9s par sa m\u00e8re de 96 ans - lui a fait \u00ab chaud au c\u0153ur. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

Les femmes sont ravies du hockey \u00e0 Halifax cet hiver. Selon Mme Lacroix, plus de 40 athl\u00e8tes militaires se pr\u00e9sentent aux entra\u00eenements, et la d\u00e9cision la plus difficile a \u00e9t\u00e9 de laisser certains d'entre eux derri\u00e8re pour le tournoi r\u00e9gional. Elles jouent r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement dans une ligue de la ville (\u00ab Nous nous amusons \u00bb, dit-elle en parlant de leur niveau de succ\u00e8s) et n'ont que des \u00e9loges \u00e0 faire sur l'impact du hockey f\u00e9minin : croissance des athl\u00e8tes olympiques canadiennes, d\u00e9veloppement et opportunit\u00e9 pour les filles qui grandissent maintenant et soutien des superviseurs militaires pour les femmes d\u00e9sireuses de venir s'entra\u00eener et participer \u00e0 des comp\u00e9titions.<\/span><\/p>\n
