En vieillissant, plus je me suis pench\u00e9 sur la question, plus j'ai r\u00e9alis\u00e9 qu'il s'agissait d'une histoire ph\u00e9nom\u00e9nale, qui doit \u00eatre connue et comprise \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Sgt Safire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Op\u00e9rateur de renseignement au sein du 36e Groupe-brigade du Canada (GBC) de la 5e Division canadienne, le Sgt Safire s'est joint aux Forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes en 2003. Il est l'arri\u00e8re-arri\u00e8re-arri\u00e8re-petit-neveu du Premier ma\u00eetre de 1re classe (Pm 1) William Hall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H\u00e9ros de la marine canadienne, Hall a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9cor\u00e9 de la Croix de Victoria pour ses actions lors de la rel\u00e8ve de Lucknow, dans l'Inde sous domination britannique, en 1857. Lorsqu'il a re\u00e7u cette d\u00e9coration, le 28 octobre 1859, le Pm 1 Hall est devenu le premier Noir de l'Empire britannique, le premier marin canadien et le premier N\u00e9o-\u00c9cossais \u00e0 m\u00e9riter cette prestigieuse m\u00e9daille.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William Hall est n\u00e9 le 25 avril 1829 pr\u00e8s de Horton's Bluff, en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse. Ses parents - Jacob et Lucinda Hall - \u00e9taient des esclaves \u00e9mancip\u00e9s qui sont arriv\u00e9s en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse sur une fr\u00e9gate de la marine britannique pendant la guerre de 1812.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00c0 tout juste 15 ans, le jeune William Hall a quitt\u00e9 la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse pour prendre la mer, servant bri\u00e8vement dans la marine am\u00e9ricaine de 1847 \u00e0 1849, avant de s'engager dans la Royal Navy en 1852.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab En tant que jeune homme noir, \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque, il y avait tr\u00e8s peu d'opportunit\u00e9s en dehors du travail manuel pour lui. Il n'y avait rien d'autre o\u00f9 il aurait pu r\u00e9aliser son potentiel comme il a pu le faire dans l'arm\u00e9e \u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outre le sens de l'aventure, Hall a peut-\u00eatre aussi ressenti un sentiment de dette envers les Britanniques pour la libert\u00e9 de sa famille lorsqu'il s'est engag\u00e9 dans la marine britannique, ajoute le sergent Safire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">En 1857, lorsque la mutinerie a \u00e9clat\u00e9 en Inde, le matelot Hall \u00e9tait membre de l'\u00e9quipage du navire de Sa Majest\u00e9 (HMS) <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shannon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> et faisait partie de la brigade navale charg\u00e9e de combattre la r\u00e9bellion. Le 16 novembre 1857, alors que les pertes s'accumulaient, le matelot Hall et le lieutenant Thomas James Young \u00e9taient les deux seuls survivants de l'\u00e9quipe de tir de la marine, tirant jusqu'\u00e0 ce qu'ils ouvrent une br\u00e8che dans la fortification des rebelles, ouvrant la voie aux troupes britanniques dans ce qui est maintenant connu comme la bataille de Lucknow.\n.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promu au rang de quartier-ma\u00eetre, l'\u00e9quivalent de l'actuel premier ma\u00eetre de premi\u00e8re classe, le premier ma\u00eetre Hall a pris sa retraite de la Royal Navy le 10 juin 1876. Bien qu'on lui ait offert un poste \u00e0 Whitehall, \u00e0 Londres, il a choisi de retourner en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse, \u00e0 la vie rurale et \u00e0 la ferme familiale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab Renoncer \u00e0 un poste aussi visible, qui lui aurait offert un acc\u00e8s au pouvoir... pour moi, cela t\u00e9moigne du caract\u00e8re de cet homme, de son humilit\u00e9 \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le sergent Safire. \u00ab Il avait servi son pays avec distinction et honneur, mais maintenant il voulait une vie plus simple. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C\u00e9l\u00e9br\u00e9 par sa famille pour ses r\u00e9alisations, Hall n'a re\u00e7u aucune accolade \u00e0 son retour en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse, \u00e0 l'exception d'une br\u00e8ve reconnaissance en 1901, lorsque le duc de Cornwall et de York (plus tard le roi George V) a visit\u00e9 la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse et que Hall a particip\u00e9 \u00e0 un d\u00e9fil\u00e9 avec d'autres anciens combattants, portant sa Croix de Victoria et d'autres m\u00e9dailles de service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trois ans plus tard, lorsque Hall est d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 le 25 avril 1904, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 enterr\u00e9 dans une tombe non marqu\u00e9e, sans honneurs militaires.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab Sa famille \u00e9tait fi\u00e8re de son service et de son dossier militaire, mais il n'y a eu aucune reconnaissance publique ; il est mort dans l'obscurit\u00e9, son histoire \u00e9tant inconnue \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le sergent Safire, ajoutant qu'il est \u00e9galement mort dans la pauvret\u00e9, obligeant sa famille \u00e0 vendre ses m\u00e9dailles pour r\u00e9gler ses dettes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La reconnaissance des efforts de Hall s'est faite lentement. En 1945, sa d\u00e9pouille est r\u00e9-inhum\u00e9e \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 du terrain de l'\u00e9glise baptiste de Hantsport (jusqu'\u00e0 la fin des ann\u00e9es 1960, de nombreux cimeti\u00e8res s\u00e9paraient les Noirs des terrains principaux), et en 1947, un cairn comm\u00e9moratif est \u00e9rig\u00e9 en son honneur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ses m\u00e9dailles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 ramen\u00e9es d'Angleterre au Canada pour \u00eatre expos\u00e9es \u00e0 l'Expo 67 \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al, et en 2010, un timbre comm\u00e9moratif a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9mis avec une illustration du Pm 1 Hall portant ses m\u00e9dailles militaires.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En 2015, lorsque la MRC a annonc\u00e9 que le quatri\u00e8me NPEA serait nomm\u00e9 pour le Pm 1 Hall, sa famille \u00e9largie de parents vivants a publi\u00e9 une d\u00e9claration, disant que l'honneur \u00ab mettra certainement en lumi\u00e8re son histoire incroyable - une histoire de bravoure extraordinaire, de pers\u00e9v\u00e9rance et de d\u00e9vouement au devoir face \u00e0 des chances presque incroyables. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Membre du groupe consultatif sur les minorit\u00e9s visibles de la D\u00e9fense, le Sgt Safire a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que des histoires telles que celle de Hall aident \u00e0 faire comprendre aux gens notre histoire commune et l'importance des efforts de diversit\u00e9 et d'inclusion \u00e0 l'avenir.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab Les gens doivent r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir aux partis pris et aux pr\u00e9jug\u00e9s du pass\u00e9, et examiner leurs propres partis pris et pr\u00e9jug\u00e9s. Nous devrions tous le faire \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le sergent Safire. \u00ab Il est important d'entendre des histoires comme celle de William Hall.
