L'histoire du premier ma\u00eetre (PM) Max Bernays est l'une de ces histoires. Elle constitue un exemple indispensable de bravoure qui continuera d'inspirer des g\u00e9n\u00e9rations de Canadiens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Qui \u00e9tait Max Bernays?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">N\u00e9 en 1910 \u00e0 Vancouver, Max Bernays est issu d'une famille de marins. Il passe ses premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es dans la marine marchande avant de s'engager dans la R\u00e9serve des volontaires de la Marine royale canadienne en 1929, puis d'\u00eatre mobilis\u00e9 pour la Seconde Guerre mondiale une d\u00e9cennie plus tard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">N'ayant qu'une exp\u00e9rience limit\u00e9e du poste sur de petits navires de guerre, Max Bernays est promu premier ma\u00eetre par int\u00e9rim en mars 1942 et nomm\u00e9 capitaine d'armes du destroyer de classe River NCSM <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Assiniboine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, un poste normalement occup\u00e9 par un marin plus exp\u00e9riment\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le jeune Max Bernays et son bord seront bient\u00f4t engag\u00e9s dans des op\u00e9rations d'escorte de convois dans l'Atlantique Nord, sous la direction du Capitaine de corvette John Stubbs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\"><b>Incendie \u00e0 bord du NCSM <em>Assiniboine<\/em><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Le 6 ao\u00fbt 1942, quelques mois seulement apr\u00e8s la nomination du PM Bernays au poste de capitaine d'armes, le NCSM <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Assiniboine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> s'est engag\u00e9 dans un f\u00e9roce combat au canon de surface contre le sous-marin allemand U-210. Le pont et la timonerie de <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">l'Assiniboine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> ont \u00e9t\u00e9 engloutis par le feu des obus lanc\u00e9s \u00e0 bout portant par le U-210.\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00c0 la barre du bord, alors que les flammes et la fum\u00e9e l'encerclent, le PM Bernays ordonne aux deux t\u00e9l\u00e9graphistes pr\u00e9sents dans la timonerie de se mettre \u00e0 l'abri. Seul, bless\u00e9 et pi\u00e9g\u00e9 par le feu, le Pm Bernays a continu\u00e9 \u00e0 ex\u00e9cuter tous les ordres de la barre tout en envoyant plus de 130 ordres t\u00e9l\u00e9graphiques \u00e0 la salle des machines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La t\u00e9nacit\u00e9 du PM Bernays face \u00e0 cette adversit\u00e9 apparemment insurmontable a permis au NCSM  <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Assiniboine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019de vaincre le U-210, avec des pertes minimales pour l'\u00e9quipage du navire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Reconnaissance du PM Bernays<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pour la bravoure dont il a fait preuve lors de l'affrontement du NCSM<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Assiniboine <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">avec le U-210, le PM Bernays a re\u00e7u la M\u00e9daille pour actes insignes de bravoure, une m\u00e9daille qui lui a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9cern\u00e9e \u00e0 lui et \u00e0 une seule autre personne de la MRC pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Le courage dont a fait preuve le PM Bernays \u00e0 bord du NCSM <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Assiniboine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00e9tait si impressionnant qu'il a attir\u00e9 l'attention de l'\u00e9minent officier g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de la MRC, le Contre-amiral L.W. Murray. Il a recommand\u00e9 que le pmc Bernays re\u00e7oive la tr\u00e8s prestigieuse Croix de Victoria (CV). Bien qu'\u00e0 l'\u00e9poque, les autorit\u00e9s du Royaume-Uni aient d\u00e9cid\u00e9 que la recommandation ne r\u00e9pondait pas aux crit\u00e8res stricts requis pour l'obtention de la CV, le sentiment est rest\u00e9 fort que la bravoure du PM Bernays m\u00e9ritait cette plus haute distinction.\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En septembre 2014, le gouvernement du Canada a annonc\u00e9 que chaque bord de la nouvelle classe de navires de patrouille extrac\u00f4tiers et arctiques (NPEA) de la MRC serait nomm\u00e9 en l'honneur d'\u00e9minents h\u00e9ros canadiens ayant servi la MRC. Par la suite, le PM Bernays est devenu l'homonyme du troisi\u00e8me NPEA du Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Le NCSM Max Bernays re\u00e7oit un nom<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">La MRC a accept\u00e9 le NCSM Max Bernays de Irving Shipbuilding Inc. le 2 septembre 2022. L'\u00e9quipage inaugural actuel du NCSM Max Bernays est compos\u00e9 d'une \u00e9quipe relativement petite de marins tr\u00e8s comp\u00e9tents et tr\u00e8s motiv\u00e9s. Tous sont tr\u00e8s fiers de l'origine du nom de leur navire.<\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La devise du navire, \u00ab Interriti Impetus \u00bb, se traduit du latin par \u00ab Sans peur du feu \u00bb, en hommage \u00e0 l'h\u00e9ro\u00efsme dont Max Bernays a fait preuve sous le feu de l'ennemi et entour\u00e9 de flammes \u00e0 bord de  <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">l'Assiniboine.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">La fiert\u00e9 que ressent l'\u00e9quipage du NCSM Max Bernays trouve son origine dans les actions h\u00e9ro\u00efques du PM Bernays. Son h\u00e9ritage a inspir\u00e9 de nombreux marins de la c\u00f4te Est pendant le court s\u00e9jour du navire \u00e0 l'arsenal maritime d'Halifax. Il inspirera sans aucun doute de nombreux autres marins dans les ann\u00e9es \u00e0 venir, avec le transfert prochain du NCSM Max Bernays \u00e0
