Ils \u00e9taient tous jeunes ; Hatheway et Cann avaient tous deux 16 ans, et Palmer et Silver tout juste 17 ans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">N\u00e9 \u00e0 Granville, en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse, Hatheway avait v\u00e9cu \u00e0 Fredericton, au Nouveau-Brunswick, avant de venir \u00e0 Halifax pour fr\u00e9quenter le coll\u00e8ge naval. Cann, fils d'un armateur marchand, \u00e9tait originaire de Yarmouth, en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse. Le p\u00e8re de Silver \u00e9tait le capitaine Harry St. Clare Silver, un v\u00e9t\u00e9ran et un homme d'affaires bien connu \u00e0 Halifax. Palmer, qui a obtenu son dipl\u00f4me en \u00e9tant le premier de sa classe, est n\u00e9 et a grandi \u00e0 Halifax et est le fils d'un sergent-major du G\u00e9nie royal canadien.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Lorsque les quatre hommes ont obtenu leur dipl\u00f4me d'aspirant marins le 25 janvier 1913, la MRC, qui \u00e9tait en difficult\u00e9, ne comptait que deux croiseurs de classe Diadem, tous deux d'anciens navires de la Royal Navy. Le NCSM Rainbow \u00e9tait stationn\u00e9 sur la c\u00f4te ouest et le NCSM Niobe servait \u00e0 partir de Halifax, bien que le navire soit rest\u00e9 la plupart du temps au port pour des r\u00e9parations avant le d\u00e9clenchement de la guerre apr\u00e8s s'\u00eatre \u00e9chou\u00e9 au large du cap Sable en 1911.<\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Form\u00e9s \u00e0 bord du croiseur HMS Berwick de la Royal Navy - o\u00f9 ils gagnaient 2 $ par jour - les quatre aspirants \u00e9taient de retour au Canada lorsque la guerre a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9clar\u00e9e le 4 ao\u00fbt 1914. Ils ont tous re\u00e7u l'ordre de se pr\u00e9senter au NCSM Niobe \u00e0 l'arsenal maritime d'Halifax.<\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Moins de deux semaines plus tard, le HMS Good Hope fait escale \u00e0 Halifax et change le cours de leur jeune vie.<\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Faisant partie d'un escadron avec le HMS Monmouth et le HMS Suffolk, le Good Hope se dirigeait vers l'Am\u00e9rique du Sud pour traquer un escadron allemand sp\u00e9cifique qui coulait les navires marchands alli\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Il lui manquait quatre aspirants marins \u00e0 son arriv\u00e9e. Palmer et Silver ont \u00e9t\u00e9 personnellement s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9s par le Contre-amiral Cradock pour rejoindre l'\u00e9quipage du Good Hope. Cann et Hatheway ont \u00e9t\u00e9 choisis par tirage au sort pour les deux places restantes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab Inutile de dire que leurs anciens camarades de classe et aspirants \u00e9taient probablement envieux de la chance qu'ils avaient de servir sur le navire amiral de la Royal Navy \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Gamble.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pendant qu'ils \u00e9taient en mer, les hommes ont \u00e9crit des lettres \u00e0 leur famille, dont certaines font partie de la collection du Mus\u00e9e naval d'Halifax, a ajout\u00e9 Gamble, en montrant des images num\u00e9ris\u00e9es des lettres \u00e9crites par Hatheway et Cann sur un grand \u00e9cran dans le cadre de sa pr\u00e9sentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Le 1er novembre 1914, le Good Hope patrouillait au large de la c\u00f4te de Coronel, au Chili, lorsqu'il a rencontr\u00e9 l'escadron allemand.<\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Surpass\u00e9s par les Allemands, le HMS Good Hope et le Monmouth sont perdus. Plus de 1 500 personnes ont p\u00e9ri, dont les quatre jeunes aspirants de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse, devenant ainsi les premi\u00e8res victimes canadiennes de la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale et les premiers membres de la MRC \u00e0 mourir en service.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab On a dit \u00e0 l'\u00e9poque que c'\u00e9tait l'une des pires d\u00e9faites de la Royal Navy en un si\u00e8cle. Ce fut un choc \u00e9norme pour la Royal Navy, la Marine royale du Canada et toutes les marines alli\u00e9es \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Gamble.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\" translation-block\">La nouvelle a mis du temps \u00e0 parvenir \u00e0 Halifax. Le 5 novembre, le Halifax Herald a rapport\u00e9 des rumeurs de bataille au large des c\u00f4tes du Chili, et deux jours plus tard, il a annonc\u00e9 que le Good Hope avait \u00e9t\u00e9 perdu avec tous ses hommes, y compris les quatre jeunes aspirants marins.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab Ce n'est qu'\u00e0 la fin de novembre que les familles ont re\u00e7u l'avis officiel d'Ottawa de leur d\u00e9c\u00e8s \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Gamble, en montrant une image num\u00e9ris\u00e9e de la lettre envoy\u00e9e \u00e0 la famille de M. Hatheway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus de 60 000 Canadiens sont morts pendant la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale, et 172 000 autres ont \u00e9t\u00e9 bless\u00e9s.
