The ship\u2019s company of His Majesty\u2019s Canadian Ship Margaret Brooke<\/i> lent a helping hand to fellow Canadians while on their way home from Operation Nanook<\/i> in the Canadian Arctic.<\/p>\n

The ship and its crew stopped at several small communities along the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador to conduct wellness checks in the wake of Hurricane Fiona. Tucked into coves and hugging the rocky coastline of Canada\u2019s easternmost province, these semi-isolated communities are only accessible by boat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is what I signed up for,\u201d said Petty Officer 2nd (PO2) Class Caroline Hamilton, Assistant Chief Boatswain Mate. \u201cThis is why I put on the uniform every day, why I wear the flag. Let\u2019s go help our people, our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crew members described the warm welcome they received from the people of Francois, Grey River, Ramea, Burgeo and LaPoile, all located east of hard-hit Port aux Basques along Newfoundland\u2019s southwest shore.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter suffering through that hurricane, the people welcomed us with open arms,\u201d said Lieutenant(N) Lisa Tubb, Public Affairs Officer for the ship. \u201cYou have no idea how wonderful it was \u2013 they lined the jetties and welcomed us like family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once ashore, the crew took photos and notes of damage at the request of community leaders, sending the information back to Joint Task Force Atlantic in Halifax to coordinate any response required.<\/p>\n

The level of damage done to each community varied; however, in Ramea, the town\u2019s drinking water was contaminated by the salty ocean that crashed over retaining walls during the storm surge.<\/p>\n

\u201cNewfoundlanders have been happy to see us!\u201d said PO2 Class Hamilton. \u201cIn some communities we have been the first people they have seen from outside following Hurricane Fiona. Sometimes they don\u2019t want to let us go!\u201d<\/p>\n

For Margaret Brooke\u2019s<\/i> Executive Officer, Lieutenant-Commander (LCdr) Kyle Aubrey, being able to connect with these semi-isolated communities was a great reminder for everyone about why they choose to join the Navy \u2013 to protect and serve Canadians.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeeing their appreciation, even for just a visit to check in on how they were doing, made for a rewarding experience for the whole team,\u201d LCdr Aubrey said. \u201cI\u2019m so proud of our sailors for rising to the occasion and showing that the Margaret Brooke<\/i> crew is second to none.\u201d<\/p>\n

On September 29, the ship assisted the community of LaPoile in clean-up efforts from Hurricane Fiona, before making its way back to Halifax for a well-deserved rest period following an intense two months in Canada\u2019s North. Next up on Margaret Brooke\u2019s<\/i> schedule is pre-deployment preparations for a deployment in the new year on Operation Carribe<\/i>, Canada\u2019s contribution to U.S.-led counter-narcotics operations in the Caribbean Basin and the Eastern Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n

L\u2019\u00e9quipage du Navire canadien de Sa Majest\u00e9\u00a0Margaret Brooke<\/i> a pr\u00eat\u00e9 main-forte \u00e0 ses compatriotes sur le chemin du retour de l\u2019op\u00e9ration\u00a0Nanook<\/i> dans l\u2019Arctique canadien.<\/p>\n

Le navire et son \u00e9quipage se sont arr\u00eat\u00e9s dans plusieurs petites collectivit\u00e9s le long de la c\u00f4te de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador pour effectuer des v\u00e9rifications du bien-\u00eatre \u00e0 la suite de l\u2019ouragan Fiona. Nich\u00e9es dans des anses et longeant le littoral rocheux de la province la plus \u00e0 l\u2019Est du Canada, ces collectivit\u00e9s semi-isol\u00e9es ne sont accessibles que par bateau.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0C\u2019est pour cela que je me suis enr\u00f4l\u00e9e, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 la ma\u00eetre de 2e\u00a0classe\u00a0(M\u00a02)\u00a0Caroline Hamilton, premier ma\u00eetre de man\u0153uvre adjointe. C\u2019est pour cette raison que je mets l\u2019uniforme tous les jours, que je porte le drapeau. Allons aider nos gens, nos collectivit\u00e9s.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

Les membres de l\u2019\u00e9quipage ont d\u00e9crit l\u2019accueil chaleureux qu\u2019ils ont re\u00e7u des habitants de Fran\u00e7ois, Grey River, Ramea, Burgeo et La\u00a0Poile, tous situ\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019est de Port aux Basques, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 durement touch\u00e9, le long de la c\u00f4te Sud-Ouest de Terre-Neuve.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Apr\u00e8s avoir subi cet ouragan, la population nous a accueillis \u00e0 bras ouverts, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 la lieutenant de vaisseau\u00a0Lisa Tubb, officier des affaires publiques du navire. Vous n\u2019avez pas id\u00e9e \u00e0 quel point c\u2019\u00e9tait merveilleux\u00a0\u2013 elle s\u2019est align\u00e9e le long des jet\u00e9es et elle nous a accueillis comme des membres de la famille.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

Une fois \u00e0 terre, l\u2019\u00e9quipage a pris des photos et des notes \u00e0 propos des dommages \u00e0 la demande des dirigeants de la collectivit\u00e9, et a renvoy\u00e9 l\u2019information \u00e0 la Force op\u00e9rationnelle interarm\u00e9es\u00a0(Atlantique) \u00e0 Halifax pour coordonner toute intervention n\u00e9cessaire.<\/p>\n

L\u2019ampleur des d\u00e9g\u00e2ts varie d\u2019une collectivit\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019autre; cependant, \u00e0 Ramea, l\u2019eau potable de la ville a \u00e9t\u00e9 contamin\u00e9e par l\u2019oc\u00e9an sal\u00e9 qui s\u2019est abattu au-dessus des murs de sout\u00e8nement pendant l\u2019onde de temp\u00eate.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Les Terre-Neuviens ont \u00e9t\u00e9 heureux de nous voir!, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 la M\u00a02\u00a0Hamilton. Dans certaines collectivit\u00e9s, nous avons \u00e9t\u00e9 les premi\u00e8res personnes qu\u2019ils ont vues de l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur apr\u00e8s le passage de l\u2019ouragan Fiona. Parfois, ils ne veulent pas nous laisser partir!\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

Pour le commandant en second du Margaret Brooke<\/i>, le capitaine de corvette\u00a0(Capc)\u00a0Kyle Aubrey, l\u2019\u00e9tablissement de liens avec ces collectivit\u00e9s semi-isol\u00e9es a \u00e9t\u00e9 un excellent rappel pour tous des raisons pour lesquelles ils ont choisi de s\u2019enr\u00f4ler dans la Marine\u00a0\u2013 pour prot\u00e9ger et servir la population canadienne.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Le fait de voir leur appr\u00e9ciation, m\u00eame s\u2019il ne s\u2019agit que d\u2019une visite pour v\u00e9rifier comment ils vont, a \u00e9t\u00e9 une exp\u00e9rience enrichissante pour toute l\u2019\u00e9quipe, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Capc\u00a0Aubrey. Je suis tellement fier de nos marins qui ont su se montrer \u00e0 la hauteur de la situation et montrer que l\u2019\u00e9quipage du Margaret Brooke<\/i> est sans \u00e9gal.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

Le 29\u00a0septembre, le navire a aid\u00e9 la collectivit\u00e9 de La\u00a0Poile \u00e0 nettoyer les d\u00e9g\u00e2ts caus\u00e9s par l\u2019ouragan Fiona, avant de rentrer \u00e0 Halifax pour une p\u00e9riode de repos bien m\u00e9rit\u00e9e apr\u00e8s deux\u00a0mois intenses dans le Nord canadien.<\/p>\n
