As His Majesty\u2019s Royal Canadian Ship (HMCS) <\/span>Sackville<\/span><\/i> left Halifax Harbour to hold a committal of ashes ceremony recently, two members of the command team of L\u00c9 <\/span>James Joyce<\/span><\/i>, an Irish Naval Service offshore patrol vessel (OPV), joined the crew onboard the ship.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le NCSM <\/span>Sackville<\/span><\/i> held its traditional committal of ashes ceremony at sea on September 22, off Point Pleasant Park, looking towards the Canadian Peacetime Sailors\u2019 Memorial on the shore.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the committal ceremony, a memorial service commemorated the sinking of SS <\/span>Atlantic<\/span><\/i> off the coast of Nova Scotia in 1873. Of the 550 people who died in that tragedy, more than half were Irish \u2014 all but a few women and children.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lieutenant Commander Donnachadh Cahalane, the captain of L\u00c9 <\/span>James Joyce<\/span><\/i>, and the ship\u2019s executive officer, Lieutenant (Naval Service) Paul Kavanaugh, took part in a wreath-laying at sea, in memory of the lives lost on the SS <\/span>Atlantic<\/span><\/i>. They were joined by John Boylan, Deputy Head of Mission with the Irish Embassy in Ottawa.<\/span><\/p>\n

SS <\/span>Atlantic<\/span><\/i>, part of the White Star Line, had been traveling from Liverpool to New York with 975 people on board when it sunk off Lower Prospect, NS in the early hours of April 1, 1873. Until the sinking of the <\/span>Titanic<\/span><\/i> in 1912 (also a White Star Line vessel) the sinking of SS <\/span>Atlantic<\/span><\/i> held the unfortunate honour of being the largest maritime disaster of its day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As he prepared to board HMCS <\/span>Sackville<\/span><\/i>, LCdr Cahalane said he was feeling a sense of connection to the SS <\/span>Atlantic<\/span><\/i> as L\u00c9 <\/span>James Joyce<\/span><\/i> had followed a similar sail path to that of the ill-fated ship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L\u00c9 <\/span>James Joyce<\/span><\/i> left Ireland in early September for a month-long mission that took the ship on a tour of parts of North America\u2019s Atlantic coast. Prior to its arrival in Halifax on September 21, the ship had visited Boston and Portland, Maine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIreland is no stranger to maritime disasters but the sinking of the SS <\/span>Atlantic<\/span><\/i> caused a tremendous loss of life and a great deal of Irish casualties so the commemoration of this tragedy while we\u2019re here visiting Halifax was very fitting,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

L\u00c9 <\/span>James Joyce<\/span><\/i> is one of four offshore patrol vessels in the Samuel-Beckett class, all named after Irish authors and carrying L\u00c9 as a prefix to denote Long \u00c9ireannach or “Irish Ship” in Irish Gaelic.<\/span><\/p>\n

As an offshore patrol vessel, L\u00c9 <\/span>James Joyce<\/span><\/i> has a crew of 55 men and women to provide security and defence for Ireland\u2019s coast, along with fishery and pollution patrol and control, wildlife surveillance and maritime interdiction against narcotics.<\/span><\/p>\n

In recent years, the ship has also been commended for its role in various operations in the Mediterranean, helping rescue thousands of migrants as they attempted to cross the sea during the height of the migrant crisis from 2016 to 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

That humanitarian mission provided another point of connection between L\u00c9 <\/span>James Joyce<\/span><\/i> and the tragedy of the SS <\/span>Atlantic<\/span><\/i>, noted LCdr Cahalane, reflecting on the stories of how \u2014 after SS <\/span>Atlantic<\/span><\/i> ran aground on the rocks off Lower Prospect, NS \u2014 rescue parties from local seaside communities launched their boats to rescue and care for as many as 400 survivors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere were so many tie-ins for us as we took part in this event,\u201d said LCdr Cahalane.<\/span><\/p>\n

While the opportunity to host the Irish contingent and commemorate the tragedy of the SS <\/span>Atlantic<\/span><\/i> was a special part of the day\u2019s activities for HMCS <\/span>Sackville<\/span><\/i>, the main event was the committal of ashes ceremony, said Cdr (Ret\u2019d) Gary Reddy, <\/span>Sackville<\/span><\/i>\u2018s Commanding Officer with the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust (CNMT), the non-profit that operates the ship.<\/span><\/p>\n

Held twice a year aboard HMCS <\/span>Sackville<\/span><\/i>, most of the people who ask to have their ashes brought to the sea are former sailors or have a connection to the Royal Canadian Navy or the Canadian Armed Forces, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor our crew, this is our traditional service and it is held in the highest regard,\u201d Reddy said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the committal ceremony and service for SS <\/span>Atlantic<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Sackville<\/span><\/i> returned to its summer berth at Sackville Landing on the Halifax waterfront to disembark the family members before being towed to the naval dockyard to safely wait out Hurricane Fiona.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L\u00c9 <\/span>James Joyce<\/span><\/i> was docked at Tall Ships Quay on Lower Water Street and had been scheduled to host more public tours and events through the weekend before its scheduled departure on Sunday, September 25.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As the weather forecast grew more grim, the ship held public tours on the afternoon of September 22, with members of the crews on hand to show people around and answer questions, but was forced to cancel the remaining public tour events and take shelter at the dockyard while Hurricane Fiona tore through the region.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alors que le Navire royal canadien de Sa Majest\u00e9 (NCSM) Sackville<\/em> quittait le port d’Halifax pour tenir une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de remise des cendres r\u00e9cemment, deux membres de l’\u00e9quipe de commandement du L\u00c9<\/span> James Joyce<\/span><\/i>, un patrouilleur hauturier du Service naval irlandais, se sont joints \u00e0 l’\u00e9quipage \u00e0 bord du navire.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le NCSM <\/span>Sackville<\/span><\/i> a tenu sa traditionnelle c\u00e9r\u00e9monie en mer le 22 septembre, au large du parc Point Pleasant, en regardant vers le Monument comm\u00e9moratif des marins canadiens en temps de paix sur la rive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de remise des cendres, un service comm\u00e9moratif a \u00e9t\u00e9 organis\u00e9 pour rappeler le naufrage du SS <\/span>Atlantic<\/span><\/i> au large de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse en 1873. Sur les 550 personnes qui ont p\u00e9ri dans cette trag\u00e9die, plus de la moiti\u00e9 \u00e9taient irlandaises – toutes sauf quelques femmes et enfants.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le lieutenant-commandant Donnachadh Cahalane, capitaine du L\u00c9 <\/span>James Joyce<\/span><\/i>, et le commandant en second du navire, le lieutenant de vaisseau Paul Kavanaugh, ont particip\u00e9 \u00e0 un d\u00e9p\u00f4t de gerbe en mer, en m\u00e9moire des vies perdues sur le SS Atlantic. Ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 rejoints par John Boylan, chef de mission adjoint de l’ambassade d’Irlande \u00e0 Ottawa.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alors qu’il se pr\u00e9parait \u00e0 monter \u00e0 bord du NCSM <\/span>Sackville<\/span><\/i>, le lieutenant-commandant Cahalane a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 qu’il ressentait un lien avec le SS Atlantic, car le L\u00c9 <\/span>James Joyce<\/span><\/i> avait suivi un parcours similaire \u00e0 celui du navire disparu.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le L\u00c9 <\/span>James Joyce<\/span><\/i> a quitt\u00e9 l’Irlande au d\u00e9but du mois de septembre pour une mission d’un mois qui l’a amen\u00e9 \u00e0 visiter une partie de la c\u00f4te atlantique de l’Am\u00e9rique du Nord. Avant son arriv\u00e9e \u00e0 Halifax le 21 septembre, le navire avait visit\u00e9 Boston et Portland, dans le Maine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab L’Irlande n’est pas \u00e9trang\u00e8re aux catastrophes maritimes, mais le naufrage du SS Atlantic a caus\u00e9 d’\u00e9normes pertes de vies humaines et beaucoup de victimes irlandaises, de sorte que la comm\u00e9moration de cette trag\u00e9die pendant notre visite \u00e0 Halifax \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s appropri\u00e9e <\/span>\u00bb<\/span>, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le L\u00c9 <\/span>James Joyce<\/span><\/i> est l’un des quatre navires de patrouille hauturiers de la classe Samuel-Beckett, tous nomm\u00e9s d’apr\u00e8s des auteurs irlandais et portant le pr\u00e9fixe L\u00c9 pour d\u00e9signer Long \u00c9ireannach ou \u00ab navire irlandais <\/span>\u00bb<\/span> en ga\u00e9lique irlandais.<\/span><\/p>\n

En tant que navire de patrouille en mer, le L\u00c9 <\/span>James Joyce<\/span><\/i> a un \u00e9quipage de 55 hommes et femmes qui assurent la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 et la d\u00e9fense des c\u00f4tes irlandaises, ainsi que des patrouilles et des contr\u00f4les en mati\u00e8re de p\u00eache et de pollution, la surveillance de la faune et de la flore et l’interdiction maritime des stup\u00e9fiants.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, le navire a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 salu\u00e9 pour son r\u00f4le dans diverses op\u00e9rations en M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e, aidant \u00e0 sauver des milliers de migrants qui tentaient de traverser la mer au plus fort de la crise des migrants de 2016 \u00e0 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bien que l’occasion d’accueillir le contingent irlandais et de comm\u00e9morer la trag\u00e9die du SS Atlantic ait constitu\u00e9 une partie sp\u00e9ciale des activit\u00e9s de la journ\u00e9e pour le NCSM Sackville, l’\u00e9v\u00e9nement principal a \u00e9t\u00e9 la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de remise des cendres, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Capitaine de fr\u00e9gate (retrait\u00e9) Gary Reddy, commandant du<\/span> Sackville<\/span><\/i> pour lle Fonds de comm\u00e9moration de la marine canadienne, l’organisme sans but lucratif qui exploite le navire.<\/span><\/p>\n

La c\u00e9r\u00e9monie a lieu deux fois par an \u00e0 bord du NCSM <\/span>Sackville<\/span><\/i>, et la plupart des personnes qui demandent \u00e0 ce que leurs cendres soient apport\u00e9es \u00e0 la mer sont d’anciens marins ou ont un lien avec la Marine royale canadienne ou les Forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes, a-t-il pr\u00e9cis\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie d’engagement et le service pour le SS <\/span>Atlantic<\/span><\/i>, le<\/span> Sackville<\/span><\/i> est retourn\u00e9 \u00e0 son poste d’amarrage d’\u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e0 Sackville Landing, sur le front de mer d’Halifax, pour d\u00e9barquer les membres de la famille avant d’\u00eatre remorqu\u00e9 jusqu’\u00e0 l’arsenal naval pour attendre en toute s\u00e9curit\u00e9 l’ouragan Fiona.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le L\u00c9 <\/span>James Joyce<\/span><\/i> \u00e9tait amarr\u00e9 au quai des grands voiliers sur la rue Lower Water et devait accueillir d’autres visites et \u00e9v\u00e9nements publics tout au long du week-end avant son d\u00e9part pr\u00e9vu le dimanche 25 septembre.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
