In the middle of the Second World War, HMCS Stadacona, was established in the Annapolis Valley, NS with a mandate for new entry and seamanship training. Then, in March 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic hit, compelling the decentralization of BMQ to regional bases across Canada and the return of BMQ to Nova Scotia.

On a warm June evening, candidates emerged from the gate at the Halifax-Stanfield Airport. Immediately mustered into a van, they were driven to 12 Wing Shearwater where a few instructors swiftly greeted them. The recruits rapidly unloaded the van, were ushered into the barracks, and met their new platoon mates.

One of the primary goals of basic military training is to establish a solid physical and moral foundation under the direction of professional instructors. Candidates are drawn from every corner: from the prairies to the Pacific Coast; from Ontario and Quebec as well as the Atlantic provinces. For some, this was their first time away from home. For others, it was a fresh start to a new career and the potential of endless opportunities. Before they could begin the great adventure, however, candidates had to complete their transformation from civilians to military members.

The transformation began immediately. One by one, under the watchful eyes of their instructors, the candidates were marched through the barbershop to emerge at the other end with a smart new haircut. Candidates were outfitted with uniforms, issued their kit, and taught how to make their beds, how to march, and how to work as a team. Because of this, a great deal of emphasis is placed on individual accountability. It starts from the moment the candidates awake in the morning until the moment they fall asleep. From passing daily room inspections, to demonstrating motivation and drive during physical training, to achieving perfection at the drill hall, each and every candidate is always expected to present their best self. While this is trying at times, there is a purpose behind all the training. First, the high standard provides incentives for the candidates to better themselves. Second, while it may have seemed stressful at first, candidates adapt. The mental stressors in a training environment serve to condition them for the challenges they will face in their careers.

Once the initial foundation was laid, the candidates began learning more advanced military skills. The standards, set on day one, continued to be raised. It is with great credit that, rather than faltering and falling short, candidates drove themselves to not only meet but exceed the new challenges. Once versed in the basics, more advanced lessons are taught.

It was a great pleasure to watch the candidates, who in the beginning were out of step, arms swinging about, berets misaligned, begin to emerge from their civilian cocoons, and march as one unified platoon. Basic first aid was mastered, rust-free rifles were well-sighted, and gleaming blacked boots drove into the ground to the disciplined cadence of ‘left, right, left’.

The candidates’ final phase of training took place at Camp Aldershot, a few hundred kilometers down the road from the old HMCS Stadacona,. The field phase enabled them to put all their training into practice. They were physically and mentally challenged to perform under austere conditions. As the rain pelted down from above, soaking them, the candidates successfully completed the eight kilometer march-and-shoot as one unified platoon.

Following that event, they were challenged with various scenarios, intended to recreate tasks they could potentially face on deployment. For instance, one scenario required them to locate and return a black box from a downed aircraft, as well as providing medical aid to any personnel as needed. As a team, they successfully recovered the black box and applied first aid to the injured personnel they met along the way. These types of scenarios help develop the physical and mental resilience they will require over the course of their service.

Seven decades have passed since the first recruits entered the gates at CFB Stadacona,.
