With three new ships delivered to the Royal Canadian Navy over the last three years, and more to follow in the years to come, it\u2019s easy to make jokes about the major milestones now becoming old news.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rear-Admiral Brian Santarpia had a few of those as the future HMCS Max Bernays was officially handed over from Irving Shipbuilding to the RCN on September 2 in Halifax, but he also stressed the importance of the moment and the progress made so far in revitalizing the fleet.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is another exciting chapter in our proud naval history, and these new ships can be seen as a tangible commitment to work with all Canadians to protect our shared heritage,\u201d he said, highlighting the Northern focus of the Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship program.<\/span><\/p>\n

RAdm Santarpia, the Command of Maritime Forces Atlantic and Joint Task Force Atlantic, talked up the Harry-Dewolf class of ships as being ice capable for the North while being versatile enough to be effective when operating on all three of Canada\u2019s coasts or anywhere around the world. He also spoke about the diesel generator issues that recently prevented HMCS <\/span>Harry DeWolf <\/span><\/i>from deploying, and his confidence that the technical issue can be dealt with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is machinery, so things are going to break. When that happens, we investigate as deeply as we can to identify the problem, we fix it, and we get back to sea.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Commander Collin Forsberg, Max Bernays\u2019 Commanding Officer, echoed the Admiral\u2019s comments about confidence in the platform, and said his crew is excited to put the third ship of the class to the test.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll be looking at our initial readiness training in the new year to make sure we\u2019re safe to take the ship to sea, and then we\u2019ll have a series of trials that will take us up to the late summer,\u201d he said.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>The ship had a crew of 55 on the delivery date, but more were expected to fill out the unit in the coming days and weeks. There are also plans to bring in a partial West Coast crew next year before the ships transits to its eventual home port of Esquimalt, BC.<\/span><\/p>\n

As with <\/span>Harry Dewolf <\/span><\/i>et <\/span>Margaret Brooke<\/span><\/i> before it, the future HMCS Max Bernays will sail for rigorous tests and trials to ensure the HVAC and other systems can handle operating in both extreme hot and cold weather conditions. They\u2019ll also be testing the ship\u2019s small boats, weaponry and other critical functions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAfter that, we\u2019re looking forward to doing a coastal transfer through the Northwest Passage in the summer of 2023,\u201d Cdr Forsberg added, with the ship then carrying on to arrive in Esquimalt in the fall.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Future HMCS Max Bernays takes its name from Chief Petty Officer Max Bernays, a sailor from Vancouver, BC known for his heroic actions as the Coxswain of HMCS Assiniboine during the Battle of the Atlantic.<\/span><\/p>\n
