\u201cIf you could choose a superpower, what would it be?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This is a question I\u2019ve been asked at least a handful of times in my life; most often by one of my kids. Usually the list of options, though not exhaustive, looks something like this: the ability to fly, shape-shifting, x-ray vision, invisibility, and the like.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n But let\u2019s consider adding another option to that list: de-escalation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n We don\u2019t think of de-escalation as much of a superpower, but in our time, it really is. You see, we live in the age where it seems anything from our political views or favorite restaurant, through to debates about who the GOAT for a particular sport might be, can rev-up a conversation from zero to a hundred in an instant. In fact, there\u2019s a popular saying that states, \u201c\u2026that escalated quickly!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Instead, perhaps one of the most powerful and practical tools at our disposal just now is that of de-escalation. That term literally means to affect something to cause a decrease in extent, volume, or scope. In other words, to help an issue or conflict that\u2019s quickly grown out of proportion, to be scaled-back to a more manageable size.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n We routinely employ de-escalation tactics in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) across a variety of applications. Generally-speaking, the best decisions are not made and the most optimal outcomes aren\u2019t realized while in an escalated state.<\/span><\/p>\n With the superpower of de-escalation in mind, here\u2019s a three-step approach that I find both practical & helpful:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Pause<\/b>: Often what\u2019s required in situations that are escalating is a break from the action. When we are having an emotional response to conflict, a deliberate time-out can be a very helpful first step.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Communicate<\/b>: Work toward understanding where the other person is coming from. The goal at this stage shouldn\u2019t be just hearing, but instead understanding someone else\u2019s perspective.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Regroup:<\/b> After a pause, and a clearer sense of mutual understanding, the table is set to regroup and strategically bring an issue toward a mutually-beneficial resolution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Give de-escalation a try in your home, place of work, or within your significant relationships. Habituellement, la liste des options, bien que non exhaustive, ressemble \u00e0 ceci\u00a0: la capacit\u00e9 de voler, de changer de forme, la vision aux rayons X, l\u2019invisibilit\u00e9, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Mais envisageons d\u2019ajouter une autre option \u00e0 cette liste\u00a0: la d\u00e9sescalade.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Nous ne consid\u00e9rons pas la d\u00e9sescalade comme une superpuissance, mais \u00e0 notre \u00e9poque, elle l\u2019est vraiment. En effet, nous vivons \u00e0 une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 tout, depuis nos opinions politiques ou notre restaurant pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9 jusqu\u2019aux d\u00e9bats sur l\u2019identit\u00e9 du champion d\u2019un sport particulier, peut faire passer une conversation de z\u00e9ro \u00e0 cent en un instant. En fait, il y a un dicton populaire qui dit, \u00ab\u2009…\u00e7a a vite d\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9!\u2009\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n En fait, l\u2019un des outils les plus puissants et les plus pratiques dont nous disposons actuellement est peut-\u00eatre la d\u00e9sescalade. Ce terme signifie litt\u00e9ralement \u00ab\u2009agir de mani\u00e8re \u00e0 diminuer l\u2019\u00e9tendue, le volume ou la port\u00e9e de quelque chose\u2009\u00bb. En d\u2019autres termes, faire en sorte qu\u2019un probl\u00e8me ou un conflit qui a rapidement pris des proportions d\u00e9mesur\u00e9es soit ramen\u00e9 \u00e0 un niveau plus g\u00e9rable.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Dans les Forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes (FAC), nous avons r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement recours \u00e0 des tactiques de d\u00e9sescalade dans une vari\u00e9t\u00e9 de situations. En r\u00e8gle g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, on ne prend pas les meilleures d\u00e9cisions et on n\u2019obtient pas les meilleurs r\u00e9sultats lorsqu\u2019on est dans une situation d\u2019escalade.<\/span><\/p>\n En partant du principe que la d\u00e9sescalade est une superpuissance, voici une m\u00e9thode en trois \u00e9tapes que je trouve \u00e0 la fois pratique et utile\u00a0:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Faire une pause<\/b>\u00a0: Bien souvent, lorsque les situations s\u2019enveniment, il faut prendre du recul. Lorsque nous r\u00e9agissons de mani\u00e8re \u00e9motionnelle \u00e0 un conflit, il peut \u00eatre tr\u00e8s utile, dans un premier temps, de prendre une pause consciente.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Communiquer<\/b>\u00a0: Essayez de comprendre le point de vue de l\u2019autre personne. \u00c0 ce stade, l\u2019objectif ne doit pas se limiter \u00e0 \u00e9couter, mais plut\u00f4t \u00e0 comprendre le point de vue de l\u2019autre.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Se ressaisir\u00a0<\/b>: Apr\u00e8s avoir pris un temps d\u2019arr\u00eat, et en \u00eatre arriv\u00e9s \u00e0 une compr\u00e9hension mutuelle, il est possible de se ressaisir et de trouver une solution strat\u00e9gique et mutuellement satisfaisante au probl\u00e8me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Essayez la d\u00e9sescalade chez vous, au travail ou dans vos relations importantes.
