2Lt Jerome Downey \u2013 Continuing the Legacy\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n

2Lt Jerome Downey was born in Toronto, Ontario, and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He currently serves as a Reserve Army Officer with the Princess Louise Fusiliers (PLF) Infantry with 36 Canadian Brigade Group (CBG) at 5<\/span>.<\/span> Canadian Army Division. 2Lt Downey attended Saint Patrick\u2019s High School in Halifax and went on to complete his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at Mount Allison University in 2008. He has also studied the trade of steamfitter-pipefitter at both the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) and Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC), graduating in 2016 and 2019 respectively. This trade provided him with the opportunity to live and work across Canada in the Prairies and Northern Ontario to develop his skills and experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2Lt Downey says he is a regular at his local YMCA, whether he is exercising or volunteering. He enjoys serving his community by volunteering and advocating for initiatives he is passionate about, including cancer research, violence prevention, mental health, donating blood and education\/economic empowerment. He has played and coached football since 1999, coaching teams at Citadel High School, Dartmouth High, Dalhousie University and Saint Mary\u2019s University.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Upon his return to Halifax in the spring of 2018, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and completed his BMOQ-A in 2019 at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Gagetown. He was inspired to join the CAF because of his lifelong commitment to service.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always served my community and wanted to be able to serve my country to have the training and be in a position to lead should I be asked.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2Lt Downey\u2019s main responsibilities in his current role include supporting the B Coy training company, which is comprised of troops who are new recruits and just beginning their military careers. He administratively supports the process from Basic Military Qualification (BMQ) to DP1 and DP2, the final qualification training that enables members to transfer to units A Coy with other fully trained operational soldiers. 2Lt Downey has also led several equity, diversity and inclusion efforts within the PLF unit and 36 CBG as the Officer Presiding In Charge for the Diversity Soldier Experience Program (DSEP). Some highlights of his career so far include working on Domestic Operations throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Operation LASER and Operation VECTOR, as a Duty Officer. 2Lt Downey has been awarded the 36 CBG Commander\u2019s Coin in the fall of 2020 in acknowledgement of his work with the Diversity Soldier Experience Program. 2Lt Downey was also the Deputy Military Co-Chair of the Defence Visible Minority Advisory Group (DVMAG) at Maritime Forces Atlantic (MARLANT) for 2021-2022. For anyone considering a career in the CAF, 2Lt Downey encourages them to take on the challenge, commit to pushing yourself, push yourself beyond what you can imagine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2Lt Downey has a strong familial connection to the CAF \u2013 his great-grandfather, Pte George Alexander Downey was a member of the No. 2 Construction Battalion of the First World War. This was Canada\u2019s only all-Black Battalion in history. You can learn more about the Battalion here: <\/span>www.no2-cef.ca<\/span><\/a>. Another notable fact in his family history, his grandfather, Councillor Graham L. Downey, was the first Black Canadian city councillor in the history of Halifax.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBeyond being a direct descendant of a member, their story of perseverance means a lot to me. The integrity, loyalty, duty and honour they served with despite the blatant discrimination says a lot about the character of those individuals who fought to fight for their country.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He wants others to know that the No. 2 Construction Battalion served faithfully, and wanted to continue but they were thwarted at every point.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe must remember to hold our Government accountable to a standard that doesn\u2019t promote hypocrisy, but enables individuals to reach their maximum potential without supressing, discouraging and putting people down.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2Lt Downey had the opportunity to be the OPI and Officer In Charge of the No. 2 Construction Battalion Tribute Guard for the 2022 Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo and the National Apology event on July 9, 2022. This opportunity had a significant impact on him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe impact of working on the National Apology for the descendants of No.2 Construction Battalion has been truly life changing in the best ways. It is my hope for the events of this summer to serve as a catalyst moment to encourage, inspire and promote continued progress in communities that have been marginalized in the past to know you belong. Your country sees you, and you have a home and opportunity in the Canadian Armed Forces.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For 2Lt Downey, Canada will always be the greatest country in the world. The story of the No. 2 is a Canadian story of perseverance, integrity loyalty and dedication. It has been his greatest honour to help magnify their impact and lead the Tribute Guard that was formed in their honour. These Soldiers, Sailors and Aviators who came together to honour and wear the uniform of our ancestors did so with great respect. The legacy, contribution and memory of No. 2 lives on in them, and 2Lt Downey is grateful for their continued service to Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Il sert actuellement comme officier de l\u2019Arm\u00e9e de terre\u00a0(R\u00e9serve) dans le r\u00e9giment d\u2019infanterie du Princess Louise Fusiliers\u00a0(PLF) dans le 36<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0Groupe-brigade du Canada\u00a0(GBC) \u00e0 la 5<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0Division du Canada. Il a fr\u00e9quent\u00e9 l\u2019\u00e9cole secondaire Saint Patrick\u2019s \u00e0 Halifax et a obtenu un baccalaur\u00e9at \u00e8s arts en sciences politiques \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Mount Allison en 2008. Il a \u00e9galement \u00e9tudi\u00e9 le m\u00e9tier de tuyauteur-monteur de conduites de vapeur au Northern Alberta Institute of Technology\u00a0(NAIT) et au Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC), o\u00f9 il a obtenu son dipl\u00f4me en 2016 et 2019 respectivement. Le Slt\u00a0Downey d\u00e9clare qu\u2019il est un habitu\u00e9 de son YMCA local, peu importe qu\u2019il y fasse de l\u2019exercice ou du b\u00e9n\u00e9volat. Il aime servir sa collectivit\u00e9 en faisant du b\u00e9n\u00e9volat et d\u00e9fendant les initiatives pour lesquelles il se passionne, y compris la recherche contre le cancer, la pr\u00e9vention de la violence, la sant\u00e9 mentale, le don de sang et le pouvoir d\u2019agir en mati\u00e8re d\u2019\u00e9ducation et d\u2019\u00e9conomie. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 joueur et entra\u00eeneur de football depuis 1999, et a entra\u00een\u00e9 des \u00e9quipes \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cole secondaire\u00a0Citadel, l\u2019\u00e9cole secondaire de Dartmouth, Universit\u00e9 Dalhousie et l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Saint Mary\u2019s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c0 son retour \u00e0 Halifax au printemps de 2018, il s\u2019est enr\u00f4l\u00e9 dans les Forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes\u00a0(FAC) et a termin\u00e9 sa QMB(O)-A en 2019 \u00e0 la Base des Forces canadiennes\u00a0(BFC) Gagetown. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 inspir\u00e9 \u00e0 se joindre aux FAC en raison de son engagement permanent envers le service.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0J\u2019ai toujours servi ma collectivit\u00e9 et je voulais \u00eatre en mesure de servir mon pays pour avoir la formation et \u00eatre en mesure de diriger si on me le demande.\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Les principales responsabilit\u00e9s du SLt\u00a0Downey dans son r\u00f4le actuel comprennent le soutien de la Cie\u00a0B\u00a0(compagnie d\u2019instruction), qui est compos\u00e9e de troupes qui sont de nouvelles recrues et qui commencent tout juste leur carri\u00e8re militaire. Il soutient administrativement le processus depuis la Qualification militaire de base\u00a0(BMQ) jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la PP1 et la PP2, l\u2019entra\u00eenement de qualification finale qui permet aux membres de passer aux unit\u00e9s de la Cie\u00a0A avec d\u2019autres soldats op\u00e9rationnels pleinement form\u00e9s. Le Slt\u00a0Downey a \u00e9galement dirig\u00e9 plusieurs efforts en mati\u00e8re d\u2019\u00e9quit\u00e9, de diversit\u00e9 et d\u2019inclusion au sein du PLF et du 36\u00a0GBC en tant qu\u2019officier pr\u00e9sident responsable du Programme des exp\u00e9riences des soldats sur la diversit\u00e9\u00a0(PESD). Parmi les faits saillants de sa carri\u00e8re jusqu\u2019\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent, mentionnons son travail dans le cadre des op\u00e9rations nationales pendant la pand\u00e9mie de COVID-19, l\u2019op\u00e9ration\u00a0LASER et l\u2019op\u00e9ration\u00a0VECTOR, en tant qu\u2019officier de service. Il a re\u00e7u le m\u00e9daillon du commandant du 36\u00a0GBC \u00e0 l\u2019automne de 2020 en reconnaissance de son travail dans le cadre du Programme des exp\u00e9riences des soldats sur la diversit\u00e9. Il a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 le copr\u00e9sident militaire adjoint du Groupe consultatif des minorit\u00e9s visibles de la D\u00e9fense\u00a0(GCMVD) des Forces maritimes de l\u2019Atlantique\u00a0(FMAR(A)) pour 2021-2022. Il encourage tous ceux qui envisagent de faire carri\u00e8re dans les FAC \u00e0 relever le d\u00e9fi, \u00e0 s\u2019engager \u00e0 se d\u00e9passer, et \u00e0 aller au-del\u00e0 de ce qu\u2019ils peuvent imaginer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le Slt\u00a0Downey a un lien familial \u00e9troit avec les FAC\u00a0: son arri\u00e8re-grand-p\u00e8re, le Sdt\u00a0George Alexander Downey, \u00e9tait membre du 2<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0Bataillon de construction pendant la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale. Autre fait notable dans l\u2019histoire de sa famille, son grand-p\u00e8re, le conseiller Graham\u00a0L. Downey, a \u00e9t\u00e9 le premier conseiller municipal canadien noir de l\u2019histoire d\u2019Halifax.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0En plus d\u2019\u00eatre un descendant direct d\u2019un membre, leur histoire de pers\u00e9v\u00e9rance signifie beaucoup pour moi. L\u2019int\u00e9grit\u00e9, la loyaut\u00e9, le devoir et l\u2019honneur avec lesquels ils ont servi malgr\u00e9 la discrimination flagrante en disent long sur la personnalit\u00e9 de ces personnes qui se sont battues pour d\u00e9fendre leur pays.\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Il veut que les autres sachent que le 2<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0Bataillon de construction a servi fid\u00e8lement, et qu\u2019il voulait continuer mais qu\u2019il a \u00e9t\u00e9 contrecarr\u00e9 \u00e0 chaque \u00e9tape.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Nous devons nous rappeler de tenir notre gouvernement responsable d\u2019une norme qui ne favorise pas l\u2019hypocrisie, mais qui permet aux personnes d\u2019atteindre leur plein potentiel sans r\u00e9primer, d\u00e9courager et rabaisser les gens.\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le Slt\u00a0Downey a eu l\u2019occasion d\u2019\u00eatre le BPR et l\u2019officier responsable de la garde d\u2019hommage du 2<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0Bataillon de construction pour le Tattoo royal international de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse de 2022 et les excuses nationales du 9\u00a0juillet 2022. Cette occasion a eu des incidences importantes sur lui.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Le fait de travailler sur les excuses nationales pour les descendants du 2<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0Bataillon de construction a vraiment chang\u00e9 ma vie, de la meilleure fa\u00e7on qui soit. J\u2019esp\u00e8re que les activit\u00e9s de cet \u00e9t\u00e9 serviront de catalyseur pour encourager, inspirer et promouvoir des progr\u00e8s continus dans les communaut\u00e9s qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 marginalis\u00e9es dans le pass\u00e9 afin qu\u2019elles aient un sentiment d\u2019appartenance. Votre pays vous voit, et vous avez un foyer et une occasion dans les Forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes.\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pour le Slt\u00a0Downey, le Canada sera toujours le meilleur pays au monde. L\u2019histoire du 2<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0Bataillon est une histoire canadienne de pers\u00e9v\u00e9rance, d\u2019int\u00e9grit\u00e9, de loyaut\u00e9 et de d\u00e9vouement. C\u2019est un grand honneur pour lui de contribuer \u00e0 amplifier leurs r\u00e9percussions et de diriger la garde d\u2019hommage qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 form\u00e9e en leur honneur. Ces soldats, marins et aviateurs qui se sont r\u00e9unis pour honorer et porter l\u2019uniforme de leurs anc\u00eatres l\u2019ont fait avec beaucoup de respect. Le patrimoine, la contribution et le souvenir du 2<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0Bataillon vivent en eux, et le Slt\u00a0Downey est reconnaissant pour leur service continu rendu au Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
