Annual campaigns raise more than $140,000 for children and their families<\/b><\/h3>\n

Running in two separate relay runs earlier this summer, teams from two Canadian Navy frigates \u2014 HMCS Charlottetown<\/i> en St. John\u2019s<\/i> \u2014 raised nearly $145,000 for Make-A-Wish Canada, helping support critically-ill children and their families.<\/p>\n

Starting at North Cape, PEI for their 19th annual Run 4 Wishes campaign, the HMCS Charlottetown<\/i> team ran more than 400 kilometres from June 30 to July 4, raising over $36,000 for the PEI chapter of Make-A-Wish Canada. Since it first started, the Run 4 Wishes campaign has raised over $545,000.<\/p>\n

Beginning their 27th annual Run the Rock campaign in Port aux Basques, a team of 14 runners from HMCS St. John\u2019s<\/i> covered more than 900 kilometres from July 7 to July 18, going well over their target of $100,00 to raise more than $108,000 for children and families in need\u00a0 in Newfoundland and Labrador.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo many people were super generous, putting $20s and even $50s into the bucket\u2026 it was just incredible,\u201d said Master Sailor Gregory Fillmore, the team lead with HMCS St. John\u2019s<\/i>.<\/p>\n

The runners had set stops along the way. In some towns, when a team member had a personal connection to the area or family living there, special gatherings were held to welcome the team and raise even more money, said MS Fillmore, giving a special shoutout to the families of S1 Joel Goodyear, MS Michael Thoms, PO2 Nicolas Earle, SLt Lacey Gilley and S2 Heidi Hennebury for their efforts.<\/p>\n

Explaining the strategy, MS Fillmore said the team divvied up into three groups \u2014 one group to fundraise in the community they were starting from, one group to run, and the third to go to the next stop, to begin fundraising there.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt worked really well. The run days were hard, as you had to do a lot of kilometres, but then you\u2019d get two days off running and you could be out meeting people,\u201d said MS Fillmore, giving credit to one of their team members, MS Mark Brown, a long distance runner, for covering extra ground for the group.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were pretty fortunate to have him. I think he broke the record for the number of kilometres run by a member of the Run the Rock team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meeting the \u201cwish kids\u201d along the way was a big highlight for the team, he added, noting that one of the children was at the closing ceremonies with his family.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were in St. John\u2019s for a hospital appointment, and after the run was over we found out that they got the news that he was cancer free so he got to ring the bell, that was pretty special for all of us,\u201d said MS Fillmore.<\/p>\n

After holding their annual Run 4 Wishes run virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was great to be back running in person in PEI, said PO1 Jonathan Lindal with the HMCS Charlottetown <\/i>team.<\/p>\n

Hitting daily averages between 70 to 90 kilometres, the team of runners stopped at communities along the way to collect donations and meet with supporters, and to meet wish recipients \u2014 children who\u2019ve either had a wish granted or are waiting for their wish to be granted, PO1 Lindal explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cGetting to meet the wish children really puts it all in perspective\u2026 it brings it all home why we do this and it definitely makes your legs feel a little bit lighter as you\u2019re out there running towards the end of the day,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is an amazing event. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to take part in it\u2026 it\u2019s the absolute highlight of my career.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lors de deux courses \u00e0 relais distinctes plus t\u00f4t cet \u00e9t\u00e9, des \u00e9quipes de deux fr\u00e9gates de la Marine canadienne – le NCSM Charlottetown<\/i> et le NCSM St. John’s<\/i> – ont recueilli pr\u00e8s de 145 000 $ pour Make-A-Wish Canada, afin d’aider les enfants gravement malades et leurs familles.<\/p>\n

Partant de North Cape, \u00e0 l’\u00cele-du-Prince-\u00c9douard, pour sa 19e campagne annuelle Run 4 Wishes, l’\u00e9quipe du NCSM Charlottetown<\/i> a couru plus de 400 kilom\u00e8tres du 30 juin au 4 juillet, recueillant plus de 36 000 $ pour la section de l’\u00cele-du-Prince-\u00c9douard de Make-A-Wish Canada. Depuis son lancement, la campagne Run 4 Wishes a permis de recueillir plus de 545 000 $.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Cela a tr\u00e8s bien fonctionn\u00e9. Les jours de course \u00e9taient difficiles, car il fallait faire beaucoup de kilom\u00e8tres, mais nous avions ensuite deux jours de repos pour aller \u00e0 la rencontre des gens \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Matc Fillmore, en attribuant le m\u00e9rite \u00e0 l’un des membres de l’\u00e9quipe, le Matc Mark Brown, un coureur de fond, qui a couvert le terrain suppl\u00e9mentaire pour le groupe.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Nous avons eu beaucoup de chance de l’avoir. Je pense qu’il a battu le record du nombre de kilom\u00e8tres courus par un membre de l’\u00e9quipe Run the Rock. \u00bb<\/p>\n

La rencontre avec les \u00ab enfants de r\u00eave \u00bb\u00a0 tout au long du parcours a \u00e9t\u00e9 un grand moment pour l’\u00e9quipe, a-t-il ajout\u00e9, notant que l’un des enfants \u00e9tait pr\u00e9sent aux c\u00e9r\u00e9monies de cl\u00f4ture avec sa famille.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Ils \u00e9taient \u00e0 St. John’s pour un rendez-vous \u00e0 l’h\u00f4pital, et apr\u00e8s la course, nous avons appris qu’ils avaient appris qu’il n’avait plus de cancer et qu’il pouvait donc sonner la cloche. C’\u00e9tait assez sp\u00e9cial pour nous tous \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Matc Fillmore.<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s avoir tenu leur course annuelle Run 4 Wishes virtuellement en raison de la pand\u00e9mie de COVID-19, c’\u00e9tait formidable de revenir courir en personne \u00e0 l’\u00ce.-P.-\u00c9., a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le M1 Jonathan Lindal de l’\u00e9quipe du NCSM Charlottetown<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Avec des moyennes quotidiennes de 70 \u00e0 90 kilom\u00e8tres, l’\u00e9quipe de coureurs s’est arr\u00eat\u00e9e dans des communaut\u00e9s le long du chemin pour recueillir des dons et rencontrer des partisans, ainsi que pour rencontrer les b\u00e9n\u00e9ficiaires de v\u0153ux – des enfants qui ont r\u00e9alis\u00e9 un v\u0153u ou qui attendent que leur v\u0153u soit r\u00e9alis\u00e9, a expliqu\u00e9 le M1 Lindal.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Rencontrer les enfants qui ont fait un v\u0153u, c’est vraiment mettre les choses en perspective… c’est la raison pour laquelle nous faisons cela et cela rend vos jambes un peu plus l\u00e9g\u00e8res lorsque vous courez vers la fin de la journ\u00e9e \u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9. \u00ab C’est un \u00e9v\u00e9nement extraordinaire.
