New solar lights brightening things up at CFB Halifax<\/b><\/h3>\n

Things are looking a little brighter lately around CFB Halifax, thanks to the installation of a set of six new solar and wind-powered lights that will also help bring down the base\u2019s carbon footprint.<\/p>\n

The CFB Halifax Base Commander at the time, Capt(N) Sean Williams, and his predecessor, Cmdre David Mazur, who is now serving as the Fleet Commodore at Maritime Forces Pacific (MARPAC) in Esquimalt, met up earlier this summer to check out the newly installed lights and thank members of the team for making the work happen. They were joined by staff from Maritime Forces Atlantic (MARLANT) Safety and Environment and Defence Construction Canada.<\/p>\n

Cmdre Mazur, who was in Halifax for a visit, said a number of factors led the project happening, including a lack of proper lighting on the base in the evenings, ongoing challenges with infrastructure, and a desire to continue moving CFB Halifax in an environmentally-friendly direction.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was a way to combine all three of those three concerns into one good idea for the base, and I was so happy to be able to come back and see the finished product.\u201d<\/p>\n

A small plaque installed near the lights outside the Naval Museum of Halifax makes mention of Cmdre Mazur\u2019s passion for the environment and climate change issues, but he said the move was common sense for the base more than it was inspired by his own interests, especially after taking note of the green infrastructure features being used by private-sector businesses.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is something our bases should be doing in any capacity we can, and I know that the same thoughts are happening when we put up our new buildings or have other large projects. It\u2019s very important,\u201d Cmdre Mazur said.<\/p>\n

Bill Kelly, who helped get the project off the ground as Senior Staff Officer with MARLANT Safety and Environment, said despite delays to the project brought on by the pandemic, the finished product has been a welcome addition to the base.<\/p>\n

“They’re completely off the grid, they’re a great piece for promoting environmental awareness, and there’s some safety benefit as well with the extra lighting at night. We’re very happy with them.”<\/p>\n

\nOn dirait qu\u2019il y a un peu plus de lumi\u00e8re ces temps-ci \u00e0 la BFC Halifax, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l\u2019installation de nouvelles lampes aliment\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9nergie solaire et \u00e9olienne qui serviront \u00e9galement \u00e0 r\u00e9duire l\u2019empreinte carbone de la base.<\/p>\n

Le commandant de la BFC Halifax \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, le Capv Sean Williams, et son pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseur, le Cmdre David Mazur, actuellement commodore de la Flotte des Forces maritimes du Pacifique (FMAR[P]) \u00e0 Esquimalt, se sont rencontr\u00e9s au d\u00e9but de l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 pour voir les lumi\u00e8res nouvellement install\u00e9es et remercier les membres de l\u2019\u00e9quipe qui ont r\u00e9alis\u00e9 ce projet. Se sont joints \u00e0 eux des membres du personnel de la section de la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 et de l\u2019environnement des Forces maritimes de l\u2019Atlantique (FMAR[A]) et de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Construction de D\u00e9fense Canada.<\/p>\n

Le Cmdre Mazur, qui \u00e9tait de passage \u00e0 Halifax, a expliqu\u00e9 qu\u2019un certain nombre de facteurs ont contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 la mise en \u0153uvre du projet, notamment un \u00e9clairage insuffisant en soir\u00e9e \u00e0 la base, les probl\u00e8mes d\u2019infrastructure persistants et la volont\u00e9 de continuer \u00e0 faire \u00e9voluer la BFC Halifax dans une direction respectueuse de l\u2019environnement.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u2009C\u2019\u00e9tait une fa\u00e7on de faire de ces trois facteurs une seule bonne id\u00e9e pour la base, et j\u2019\u00e9tais tellement heureux de pouvoir revenir et voir le produit fini.\u2009\u00bb<\/p>\n

Sur une petite plaque install\u00e9e pr\u00e8s des lumi\u00e8res \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur du Mus\u00e9e naval d\u2019Halifax, on peut lire une remarque sur la passion du Cmdre Mazur pour l\u2019environnement et les questions de changement climatique. Cependant, ce dernier a affirm\u00e9 que c\u2019est le c\u00f4t\u00e9 pratique qui l\u2019a pouss\u00e9 \u00e0 agir plut\u00f4t que son int\u00e9r\u00eat pour le sujet, surtout apr\u00e8s avoir pris connaissance du fait que des entreprises priv\u00e9es se servaient d\u2019infrastructures autonomes.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u2009Je me suis dit que c\u2019\u00e9tait quelque chose que la base devait faire dans la mesure du possible, et je sais que les m\u00eames r\u00e9flexions sont faites lorsque nous construisons nos nouveaux b\u00e2timents ou que nous r\u00e9alisons d\u2019autres grands projets.
