There’s no life like it: CPO2 Andy Hewlett on 20 years with the CAF<\/b><\/h3>\n

Growing up in Newfoundland and Labrador, Chief Petty Officer Second Class Andy Hewlett always knew he wanted to serve his country, signing on first as an Air Cadet before joining the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) six years later, on July 5, 2002.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been in uniform since I was 12 years old,\u201d he said. \u201cThose first few years as an Air Cadet taught me about citizenship, leadership, drill and community service. I knew from a very early age that I was meant to have a life of service and that I would be wearing a uniform for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n

This past July, while deployed with HMCS Halifax<\/i> on Operation Reassurance, CPO2 Hewlett celebrated 20 years with the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN).<\/p>\n

He joined HMCS Halifax <\/i>as the ship\u2019s Operations Chief in mid-June, having previously been posted to Canadian Joint Operations Command (CJOC) in Ottawa.<\/p>\n

Being at sea while celebrating his \u201c20-year adventure\u201d milestone felt significant, CPO2 Hewlett said, especially as the date fell during Halifax\u2019s<\/i> deployment on Operation Reassurance, a mission he said he felt \u201cproud and honoured\u201d to be part of, in support of NATO\u2019s ongoing assurance and deterrence measures in response to Russian aggression.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy career is very important to me. I believe in the CAF and RCN, and the missions we participate in. I believe in the values that we stand up for,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m lucky to spend my days with amazing teams and people from all walks of life.\u201d<\/p>\n

CPO2 Hewlett said the well-known adage \u2018join the Navy, see the world\u2019 has held true for him as a Naval Communication, having deployed to Afghanistan in 2009, the Arabian Sea with Task Force Artemis in 2013 and 2014, and the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea with a previous Operation Reassurance rotation in 2017.<\/p>\n

CPO2 Hewlett has also served as Chief of Force Development and Chief of Naval Staff, and was president of the committee for NDHQ Warrant Officers\u2019 & Sergeants\u2019 Mess in Ottawa.<\/p>\n

One of the biggest challenges of his career came in May 2020, when he was the CJOC lead in coordinating and executing the respectful repatriation for the six CAF members who died when HMCS Fredericton\u2019s CH-148 Cyclone helicopter (Stalker 22) crashed during operations off the coast of Greece.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy number one priority was that I did right by our fallen, and that they received a proper return back to Canadian soil. They paid the ultimate sacrifice in service of Canada, and we needed to honour that sacrifice,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Over his past two decades of service, CPO2 Hewlett has seen a lot of changes, especially in the area of diversity and inclusion \u2014 and he\u2019s played a key role in championing that change.<\/p>\n

In 2006, he was the first CAF member to march in a Pride parade and hold the Pride flag while in uniform. The following year, as the Halifax Pride parade coordinator, he advocated for the RCN to have a marching contingent in the parade, and celebrated when a message was released authorizing members to attend the parade as spectators while in uniform.<\/p>\n

Over the coming years, CPO2 Hewlett said he\u2019s continued to celebrate as CAF members were authorized to march together as proud members of their community, and as Pride flags have been\u00a0 raised at CAF bases across the country and on naval ships.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s amazing to see how we have evolved as a society, and as an institution.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ayant grandi \u00e0 Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, le premier ma\u00eetre de deuxi\u00e8me classe Andy Hewlett a toujours su qu’il voulait servir son pays, s’engageant d’abord comme cadet de l’air avant de se joindre aux Forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes (FAC) six ans plus tard, le 5 juillet 2002.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Je porte l’uniforme depuis l’\u00e2ge de 12 ans \u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9. \u00ab Ces premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es en tant que cadet de l’air m’ont appris la citoyennet\u00e9, le leadership, l’exercice et le service communautaire. J’ai su tr\u00e8s t\u00f4t que j’\u00e9tais destin\u00e9 \u00e0 avoir une vie de service et que je porterais l’uniforme pendant longtemps. \u00bb<\/p>\n

En juillet dernier, alors qu’il \u00e9tait d\u00e9ploy\u00e9 avec le NCSM Halifax<\/i> dans le cadre de l’op\u00e9ration Reassurance, le Pm 2 Hewlett a c\u00e9l\u00e9br\u00e9 ses 20 ans de service au sein de la Marine royale canadienne (MRC).<\/p>\n

Il s’est joint au NCSM Halifax<\/i> \u00e0 titre de chef des op\u00e9rations du navire \u00e0 la mi-juin, apr\u00e8s avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 affect\u00e9 au Commandement des op\u00e9rations interarm\u00e9es du Canada (COIC) \u00e0 Ottawa.<\/p>\n

Le fait d’\u00eatre en mer pour c\u00e9l\u00e9brer son \u00ab aventure de 20 ans \u00bb \u00e9tait significatif, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Pm 2 Hewlett, d’autant plus que la date tombait pendant le d\u00e9ploiement du Halifax<\/i> dans le cadre de l’op\u00e9ration Reassurance, une mission \u00e0 laquelle il s’est dit \u00ab fier et honor\u00e9 \u00bb de participer, \u00e0 l’appui des mesures d’assurance et de dissuasion de l’OTAN en r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 l’agression russe.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Ma carri\u00e8re est tr\u00e8s importante pour moi. Je crois aux FAC et \u00e0 la MRC, et aux missions auxquelles nous participons. Je crois aux valeurs que nous d\u00e9fendons \u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9. \u00ab J’ai la chance de passer mes journ\u00e9es avec des \u00e9quipes extraordinaires et des personnes de tous horizons \u00bb.<\/p>\n

Le Pm 2 Hewlett a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que l’adage bien connu \u00ab rejoignez la Marine, voyez le monde \u00bb s’est av\u00e9r\u00e9 vrai pour lui en tant que communication navale, ayant \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9ploy\u00e9 en Afghanistan en 2009, en mer d’Arabie avec la Task Force Artemis en 2013 et 2014, et en mer M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e et en mer Noire avec une pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente rotation de l’op\u00e9ration R\u00e9assurance en 2017.<\/p>\n

Le Pm 2 Hewlett a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 chef du d\u00e9veloppement des forces et chef d’\u00e9tat-major de la marine, et il a \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sident du comit\u00e9 du mess des adjudants et des sergents du QGDN \u00e0 Ottawa.<\/p>\n

L’un des plus grands d\u00e9fis de sa carri\u00e8re s’est pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 en mai 2020, alors qu’il \u00e9tait le responsable du COIC pour la coordination et l’ex\u00e9cution du rapatriement respectueux des six membres des FAC qui ont perdu la vie lorsque l’h\u00e9licopt\u00e8re CH-148 Cyclone (Stalker 22) du NCSM tragique<\/i> s’est \u00e9cras\u00e9 pendant des op\u00e9rations au large de la Gr\u00e8ce.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Ma priorit\u00e9 absolue \u00e9tait de faire ce qu’il fallait pour nos soldats tomb\u00e9s au combat et de veiller \u00e0 ce qu’ils soient rapatri\u00e9s comme il se doit en sol canadien. Ils ont fait le sacrifice ultime au service du Canada, et nous devions honorer ce sacrifice \u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Au cours de ses deux d\u00e9cennies de service, le Pm 2 Hewlett a \u00e9t\u00e9 t\u00e9moin de nombreux changements, surtout dans le domaine de la diversit\u00e9 et de l’inclusion, et il a jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le cl\u00e9 dans la promotion de ces changements.<\/p>\n

En 2006, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 le premier membre des FAC \u00e0 participer \u00e0 un d\u00e9fil\u00e9 de la Fiert\u00e9 et \u00e0 tenir le drapeau de la Fiert\u00e9 en uniforme. L’ann\u00e9e suivante, en tant que coordonnateur du d\u00e9fil\u00e9 de la fiert\u00e9 gaie de Halifax, il a plaid\u00e9 pour que la MRC ait un contingent de marcheurs dans le d\u00e9fil\u00e9 et a c\u00e9l\u00e9br\u00e9 la publication d’un message autorisant les membres \u00e0 assister au d\u00e9fil\u00e9 en tant que spectateurs tout en portant l’uniforme.<\/p>\n

Au cours des ann\u00e9es qui ont suivi, le Pm 2 Hewlett a dit qu’il a continu\u00e9 \u00e0 c\u00e9l\u00e9brer lorsque les membres des FAC ont \u00e9t\u00e9 autoris\u00e9s \u00e0 d\u00e9filer ensemble en tant que fiers membres de leur communaut\u00e9, et lorsque les drapeaux de la Fiert\u00e9 ont \u00e9t\u00e9 hiss\u00e9s dans les bases des FAC partout au pays et sur les navires de la Marine.<\/p>\n
