CFB Halifax opening doors to students through FSWEP<\/b><\/h3>\n

Students always look for opportunities where they can develop their professional skills, improve their employability and learn how to secure their future career. The Federal Students Work Experience Program (FSWEP)<\/a> is the largest student employment program that provides hands-on, federal government work experience to students across Canada.<\/p>\n

Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Halifax hires around 50 FSWEP students each year to work throughout its branches and smaller units. With every new hiring term, there are new experiences and development opportunities to enhance students\u2019 professional abilities. Many students even return to work with CFB Halifax for more than one term, aiming to develop even more from their experience on Base.<\/p>\n

One of these students is Ambrose Tierney. He has been working with Base Information Services (BIS) for more than one year now and has lots of positive experience to share. \u201cWorking with CFB Halifax has helped my professional development and assisted me through school and been supportive of me pursuing further education,\u201d explains Tierney.<\/p>\n

Working with CFB Halifax is also beneficial for students who are not sure how their education will be applied in real life or still don\u2019t know what the next step in their educational journey will be. Student Nate MacLeod, who is working in the welding shop at the Base Logistics (BLog) Transportation, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (TEME) unit this summer, claims that \u201cworking for CFB Halifax certainly influenced my decision for post-secondary education as I was unfamiliar with metal fabrication prior to seeing it in the dockyard, and I was intrigued by the trade right away and wanted to learn more.\u201d Deonte James, who has worked with different units during his many FSWEP terms, adds that \u201cworking with CFB Halifax helped me to realize what is best for me in my education after having the opportunity to apply what I had [learned] in school into real life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Building relationships and growing skills that can be used when applying for future job opportunities are the most common responses you hear when you ask students about skills they have taken from working on Base. \u201cWorking for CFB Halifax has provided me with useful professional connections and skills that have improved my ability to find future employment,\u201d explains Griffin Bjerke-Clarke, a student working with BLog. One of our newest student at the Base, Katie Robinson, works for the Halifax & Region Military Family Resource Centre and has built lots of positive connections and relationships during her work term. \u201cWorking with the Halifax & Region Military Family Resource Centre (H&R MFRC) has helped me grow great relationships with people and learn a lot about the strength of military families,\u201d describes Robinson.<\/p>\n

The benefits of the FSWEP program are not only limited to students who work at CFB Halifax. The program also benefits the units that employ those students.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have employed many FSWEP students over the years, all of whom proved to be very positive additions to the section,\u201d explains Mike Hatt, Interim Material Acquisition and Supply Supervisor with BIS. \u201cThe students I have had the privilege of working with demonstrated an eagerness to learn and easily adapted to their totally different new workplace. Two of the students I have employed have since moved onto careers within the [Department of National Defence].\u201d<\/p>\n

Jennifer Denty, Museum Director for the Naval Museum of Halifax, is always grateful to have FSWEP students\u2019 presence in the workplace. \u201cWe are lucky to benefit from the assistance of students throughout the year. They bring energy, new ideas, and fresh perspectives to the work undertaken by our unit which helps us to remain forward thinking and relevant,\u201d she explains. \u201cThey help us to share the workload amongst our team, remind us to have some fun, and accomplish objectives which otherwise may be unattainable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Le Programme f\u00e9d\u00e9ral d\u2019exp\u00e9rience de travail \u00e9tudiant\u00a0(PFETE)<\/a> est le plus important programme d\u2019emploi \u00e9tudiant qui offre une exp\u00e9rience de travail pratique au sein du gouvernement f\u00e9d\u00e9ral \u00e0 des \u00e9tudiants de partout au Canada.<\/p>\n

La Base des Forces canadiennes\u00a0(BFC)\u00a0Halifax embauche chaque ann\u00e9e environ 50\u00a0\u00e9tudiants du PFETE pour travailler dans ses services et ses petites unit\u00e9s. Le travail avec la BFC\u00a0Halifax est \u00e9galement b\u00e9n\u00e9fique pour les \u00e9tudiants qui ne sont pas certains de la fa\u00e7on dont leur \u00e9ducation sera appliqu\u00e9e dans la vie r\u00e9elle ou qui ne savent pas encore quelle sera la prochaine \u00e9tape de leur parcours \u00e9ducatif. L\u2019\u00e9tudiant Nate MacLeod, qui travaille cet \u00e9t\u00e9 dans l\u2019atelier de soudage de l\u2019unit\u00e9 de Transport et g\u00e9nie \u00e9lectrique et m\u00e9canique\u00a0(TGEM) de la Logistique de la base\u00a0(Log\u00a0B), d\u00e9clare que \u00ab\u00a0le fait de travailler pour la BFC\u00a0Halifax a certainement influ\u00e9 sur ma d\u00e9cision de faire des \u00e9tudes postsecondaires, car je ne connaissais pas bien la fabrication du m\u00e9tal avant de la voir dans l\u2019arsenal maritime, et j\u2019ai tout de suite \u00e9t\u00e9 intrigu\u00e9 par le m\u00e9tier et j\u2019ai voulu en savoir plus\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Deonte James, qui a travaill\u00e9 avec diff\u00e9rentes unit\u00e9s au cours de ses nombreux stages du PFETE, a ajout\u00e9 que \u00ab\u00a0le fait de travailler avec la BFC\u00a0Halifax m\u2019a aid\u00e9 \u00e0 me rendre compte de ce qui est le mieux pour moi dans mes \u00e9tudes apr\u00e8s avoir eu l\u2019occasion d\u2019appliquer dans la vraie vie ce que j\u2019avais appris \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cole\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n

L\u2019\u00e9tablissement de relations et l\u2019acquisition de comp\u00e9tences qui peuvent \u00eatre utilis\u00e9es lors de la pr\u00e9sentation de sa candidature pour des emplois futurs sont les r\u00e9ponses les plus courantes que l\u2019on entend lorsqu\u2019on demande aux \u00e9tudiants quelles comp\u00e9tences ils ont acquises en travaillant \u00e0 la base.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Travailler pour la BFC\u00a0Halifax m\u2019a permis d\u2019\u00e9tablir des relations professionnelles utiles et d\u2019acqu\u00e9rir des comp\u00e9tences qui ont am\u00e9lior\u00e9 ma capacit\u00e9 de trouver un emploi futur\u00a0\u00bb, a expliqu\u00e9 Griffin Bjerke-Clarke, un \u00e9tudiant qui travaille avec la Log\u00a0B. L\u2019une de nos plus r\u00e9centes \u00e9tudiantes \u00e0 la base, Katie Robinson, travaille pour le Centre de ressources pour les familles des militaires d\u2019Halifax et r\u00e9gions et a \u00e9tabli de multiples liens et relations positifs pendant son stage. \u00ab\u00a0Travailler avec le Centre de ressources pour les familles des militaires d\u2019Halifax et r\u00e9gions (CRFM H\u00a0et\u00a0R) m\u2019a permis d\u2019\u00e9tablir de bonnes relations avec les gens et d\u2019en apprendre beaucoup sur la force des familles militaires\u00a0\u00bb, a expliqu\u00e9 Mme\u00a0Robinson.<\/p>\n

Les avantages du PFETE ne se limitent pas aux \u00e9tudiants qui travaillent \u00e0 la BFC\u00a0Halifax. Le programme profite \u00e9galement aux unit\u00e9s qui emploient ces \u00e9tudiants.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0J\u2019ai employ\u00e9 de nombreux \u00e9tudiants du PFETE au fil des ans, et tous se sont av\u00e9r\u00e9s des ajouts tr\u00e8s positifs \u00e0 la section \u00bb, a expliqu\u00e9 Mike Hatt, superviseur int\u00e9rimaire de l\u2019acquisition du mat\u00e9riel et de l\u2019approvisionnement aux SIB.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Les \u00e9tudiants avec lesquels j\u2019ai eu le privil\u00e8ge de travailler ont fait preuve d\u2019une grande soif d\u2019apprendre et se sont facilement adapt\u00e9s \u00e0 leur nouveau milieu de travail totalement diff\u00e9rent. Deux des \u00e9tudiants que j\u2019ai employ\u00e9s ont depuis fait carri\u00e8re au sein du minist\u00e8re de la D\u00e9fense nationale.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

Jennifer Denty, directrice du Mus\u00e9e naval d\u2019Halifax, est toujours reconnaissante de la pr\u00e9sence des \u00e9tudiants du PFETE dans son milieu de travail.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Nous avons la chance de profiter de l\u2019aide des \u00e9tudiants tout au long de l\u2019ann\u00e9e. Ils apportent de l\u2019\u00e9nergie, de nouvelles id\u00e9es et de nouveaux points de vue dans le travail entrepris par notre unit\u00e9, ce qui nous aide \u00e0 rester tourn\u00e9s vers l\u2019avenir et pertinents, a-t-elle expliqu\u00e9. Ils nous aident \u00e0 partager la charge de travail entre les membres de notre \u00e9quipe, nous rappellent de nous amuser et d\u2019atteindre des objectifs qui, autrement, seraient peut-\u00eatre inatteignables.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n
