They set the foundation for every woman that followed in their footsteps.”

The WRCNS was established on July 31, 1942. Referred to commonly as Wrens, the first class of 67 women — chosen from 2,000 applicants — began basic training on August 29, 1942. During the Second World War 6,800 women enlisted and served in “non-combatant” positions, nearly 1,000 of them in Halifax at HMCS Stadacona and HMC Dockyard. The WRCNS was disbanded following the war. In 1951, women were again allowed to enrol in the naval reserve, and in 1955 they were back in the regular force Navy.

Following unification of the Canadian Forces in 1968, the term Wren began to fall out of usage for regular force members, although women were still known as Wrens in the naval reserve until 1987.

Holding photos of themselves as young women (from left to right): Gladys Lees, who served in the WRCNS in 1953, Marilyn Peers who served from 1956 to 1962, and Betty Pitt, a British Wren, who served in the Royal Navy from 1944 to 1946.
JOANIE VEITCH

“Most of us are post-war Wrens, either regular force or naval reserve women, who donned the naval uniform prior to 1987,” said Roseann Jessome, president of the Nova Scotia Wren Association, referring to the attendees sitting in small groups at tables throughout the garden.

“The wartime Wrens paved the way for the post-war Wrens and we rose to the challenge; we took on new roles and were very proud of our uniforms and our service.
