Capt(N) Andy MacKenzie assumes command of CFB Halifax<\/b><\/h3>\n

Captain (Navy) Andy MacKenzie took over as Base Commander of CFB Halifax from Captain (Navy) Sean Williams during a Change of Command ceremony at the Consolidated Seamanship Training Facility at Stadacona on July 25.<\/p>\n

In his final address as Commander, Capt(N) Williams said he had \u201cmixed feelings\u201d about leaving a role he\u2019s enjoyed, in the city where he grew up.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you don\u2019t know what to say, say thank you,\u201d said Capt(N) Williams, crediting Rear-Admiral Brian Santarpia, Commander of Maritime Forces Atlantic (MARLANT) and Joint Task Force Atlantic, for giving him that advice, before expressing his gratitude to the Base Executive team and personnel across the base for their support.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is all about you,\u201d he said to the audience. \u201cThe last two years have been very challenging. You\u2019ve all gone above and beyond, constantly adapting to changing pandemic restrictions. Figuring out what we can do and how to do it safely, despite the uncertainty.\u201d<\/p>\n

Capt(N) Williams\u2019 connections to the city and his leadership style were a large part of his success in leading CFB Halifax during the difficult period of the COVID-19 pandemic, among other challenges, RAdm Santarpia added.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve done a great job of quietly, confidently allowing people to get on with the job they needed to do. To support people when there were questions, and to be fair to everyone involved through difficult and challenging situations\u2026 you will be sorely missed,\u201d said RAdm Santarpia.<\/p>\n

For the next year, Capt(N) Williams will be at Canadian Forces College in Toronto, taking the National Security Programme.<\/p>\n

Incoming Base Commander, Capt(N) MacKenzie, comes with an extensive background as a submarine warfare officer, serving in the \u201cSilent Service\u201d with both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets.<\/p>\n

A graduate of both the United States Navy Submarine Command Course and \u2018Perisher\u2019, the Norwegian Submarine Command Course, Capt(N) MacKenzie has held various command positions, including HMCS Windsor<\/i>, HMCS Victoria<\/i> and Sea Training (Submarines), as well as Deputy Commander of the Canadian Submarine Force.<\/p>\n

After serving on the naval staff at National Defence Headquarters, in 2020 Capt(N) MacKenzie earned a Master of Science degree in justice and homeland security from Salve Regina University in Rhode Island.<\/p>\n

Thanking RAdm Santarpia for the opportunity to lead the base and Capt(N) Williams for his guidance and leadership, Capt(N) MacKenzie said he\u2019s looking forward to working \u201cwith and alongside\u201d the people who make up CFB Halifax.<\/p>\n

Beyond the main function of the job \u2014 administration of the base \u2014 Capt(N) MacKenzie said his goal is to continue to build a strong team.<\/p>\n

\u201cI look forward to building a team and work environment where everyone, whether military or civilian, regardless of rank or uniform, are proud to serve and represent this great institution of ours\u2026 where people feel they belong, and where people know that they contribute directly to this great country of ours.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Change of Command opened with a smudging ceremony, offered by Hon Capt(N) Debbie Eisan, and a prayer from Captain Troy Dennis, Senior Base Chaplain. Music was provided by an ensemble of the Stadacona Band.<\/p>\n

Dans son dernier discours en tant que commandant, le Capv Williams a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 qu’il avait des \u00ab\u00a0 sentiments mitig\u00e9s \u00bb\u00a0 \u00e0 l’id\u00e9e de quitter un r\u00f4le qu’il a appr\u00e9ci\u00e9, dans la ville o\u00f9 il a grandi.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Quand vous ne savez pas quoi dire, dites merci\u00bb , a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Capv Williams, en citant le Contre-amiral Brian Santarpia, commandant des Forces maritimes de l’Atlantique (FMAR(A)) et de la Force op\u00e9rationnelle interarm\u00e9es de l’Atlantique, pour lui avoir donn\u00e9 ce conseil, avant d’exprimer sa gratitude \u00e0 l’\u00e9quipe de direction de la base et au personnel de la base pour leur soutien.<\/p>\n

\u00ab C’est de vous qu’il s’agit\u00bb , a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9 \u00e0 l’auditoire. \u00ab Les deux derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es ont \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s difficiles. Vous vous \u00eates tous surpass\u00e9s, en vous adaptant constamment aux restrictions changeantes de la pand\u00e9mie. Vous avez compris ce que nous pouvions faire et comment le faire en toute s\u00e9curit\u00e9, malgr\u00e9 l’incertitude.\u00bb<\/p>\n

Les liens du Capv Williams avec la ville et son style de leadership ont largement contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 son succ\u00e8s \u00e0 la t\u00eate de la BFC Halifax pendant la p\u00e9riode difficile de la pand\u00e9mie de COVID-19, entre autres d\u00e9fis, a ajout\u00e9 le Cam Santarpia.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0 Vous avez fait un excellent travail en permettant aux gens, de fa\u00e7on calme et confiante, de poursuivre le travail qu’ils avaient \u00e0 faire. Vous avez soutenu les gens lorsqu’ils avaient des questions, et vous avez \u00e9t\u00e9 juste envers toutes les personnes impliqu\u00e9es dans des situations difficiles… vous nous manquerez beaucoup\u00bb , a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Cam Santarpia.<\/p>\n

L’ann\u00e9e prochaine, le Capv Williams suivra le programme de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 nationale au Coll\u00e8ge des Forces canadiennes \u00e0 Toronto.<\/p>\n

Le nouveau commandant de la base, le Capv MacKenzie, poss\u00e8de une vaste exp\u00e9rience en tant qu’officier de guerre sous-marine, ayant servi dans le \u00ab\u00a0 service silencieux \u00bb\u00a0 des flottes de l’Atlantique et du Pacifique.<\/p>\n

Dipl\u00f4m\u00e9 du cours de commandement des sous-marins de la marine am\u00e9ricaine et de Perisher, le cours de commandement des sous-marins norv\u00e9giens, le Capv MacKenzie a occup\u00e9 divers postes de commandement, notamment au NCSM Windsor, au NCSM Victoria et \u00e0 l’entra\u00eenement en mer (sous-marins), ainsi que le poste de commandant adjoint de la Force sous-marine canadienne.<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s avoir fait partie de l’\u00e9tat-major de la Marine au Quartier g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de la D\u00e9fense nationale, le Capv MacKenzie a obtenu, en 2020, une ma\u00eetrise \u00e8s sciences en justice et s\u00e9curit\u00e9 int\u00e9rieure de l’Universit\u00e9 Salve Regina, \u00e0 Rhode Island.<\/p>\n

Remerciant le Cam Santarpia de lui avoir donn\u00e9 l’occasion de diriger la base et le Capv Williams pour ses conseils et son leadership, le Capv MacKenzie a dit qu’il avait h\u00e2te de travailler \u00ab\u00a0 avec et aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s \u00bb\u00a0 des personnes qui composent la BFC Halifax.<\/p>\n

Au-del\u00e0 de la fonction principale du poste – l’administration de la base – le Capv MacKenzie a dit que son objectif est de continuer \u00e0 b\u00e2tir une \u00e9quipe solide.<\/p>\n

\u00ab J’ai h\u00e2te de b\u00e2tir une \u00e9quipe et un milieu de travail o\u00f9 tous, militaires ou civils, peu importe leur grade ou leur uniforme, sont fiers de servir et de repr\u00e9senter cette grande institution qui est la n\u00f4tre… o\u00f9 les gens ont un sentiment d’appartenance et o\u00f9 les gens savent qu’ils contribuent directement \u00e0 ce grand pays qui est le n\u00f4tre.\u00bb<\/p>\n

La passation de commandement s’est ouverte par une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de purification, offerte par le capitaine de vaisseau honoraire Debbie Eisan, et par une pri\u00e8re du capitaine Troy Dennis, aum\u00f4nier principal de la base.
