{"id":8298,"date":"2022-07-29T10:29:34","date_gmt":"2022-07-29T13:29:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tridentnewspaper.com\/?p=8298"},"modified":"2022-07-29T10:36:26","modified_gmt":"2022-07-29T13:36:26","slug":"former-shipmates-work-together-again-at-rimpac-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tridentnewspaper.com\/fr\/former-shipmates-work-together-again-at-rimpac-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Former shipmates work together again at RIMPAC 2022 \/ D&#8217;anciens compagnons de bord se retrouvent \u00e0 RIMPAC 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><b>Former shipmates work together again at RIMPAC 2022<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>By Lt (N) Michelle Scott, <\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b>Le NCSM <i>Vancouver<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The Alistair MacDonald song \u2018Heading for Halifax\u2019 famously notes that for those born in Cape Breton \u2018Wherever they go, there\u2019s bound to be friends from back home\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Arriving in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, for Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2022, Lieutenant-Commander Stephen Wall, Operations Officer in Her Majesty\u2019s Australian Ship (HMAS) <i>Supply,<\/i> found that particularly true.<\/p>\n<p>LCdr Wall was born and raised on Cape Breton Island, N.S., and served in Esquimalt-based ships as a Naval Warfare Officer for 16 years before joining the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).<\/p>\n<p>The exercise gave him an opportunity to reconnect with many former shipmates on the Canadian frigates, also alongside in Pearl Harbor for RIMPAC, including his former Her Majesty\u2019s Canadian Ship (HMCS) <i>Calgary <\/i>shipmate Commander Kevin Whiteside, now HMCS <i>Vancouver<\/i>\u2019s Commanding Officer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a great opportunity to leverage the deep technical knowledge of the system that RCN operators are known for,\u201d said LCdr Wall. \u201cWe shared technical and training ideas and practices to improve both of our teams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>LCdr Wall reached out to schedule a visit for his RAN team to discuss Close-In Weapons System (CIWS) 1B training and maintenance on HMAS <i>Supply<\/i>. The training outside the planned RIMPAC evolutions not only improved the ship\u2019s capacity for interoperability between nations, but also formed new friendships and strengthened old ones. Those relationships will continue to create future opportunities to learn as <i>Vancouver<\/i> carries on with allies in support of Operations Projection and Neon upon completion of RIMPAC.<\/p>\n<p>For S1 Koerten, the experience of hosting sailors from HMAS <i>Supply<\/i> was a highlight of his first ever RIMPAC experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRIMPAC is incredible; it\u2019s like the all-stars for our line of work. It\u2019s the perfect time to get exposure to other naval systems and develop your skill set. The diversity of everyone\u2019s individual training and experiences creates a wealth of knowledge everyone can learn from,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-six nations, 38 surface ships, four submarines, nine national land forces, more than 30 unmanned systems, approximately 170 aircraft, and more than 25,000 personnel are training and operating in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California from June 29 to Aug. 4. RIMPAC, the world\u2019s largest international maritime exercise, provides a unique training opportunity while fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships among participants critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world\u2019s oceans. Le CIWS 1B est moins utilis\u00e9 sur les navires australiens, mais ses homologues canadiens connaissent bien le syst\u00e8me d&#8217;armes situ\u00e9 sur le toit du hangar de chaque navire de la classe Halifax.<\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;\u00e9volution sur le pont a permis aux marins australiens de mieux comprendre le syst\u00e8me d&#8217;armes et d&#8217;obtenir des conseils et des astuces utiles de la part d&#8217;op\u00e9rateurs et de mainteneurs de CIWS exp\u00e9riment\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Nous avons discut\u00e9 d&#8217;une grande vari\u00e9t\u00e9 de sujets, tant sur le plan des proc\u00e9dures que des concepts \u00bb, a expliqu\u00e9 le matelot de premi\u00e8re classe (Mat1) Joop Koerten, technicien en g\u00e9nie de l&#8217;armement et expert en CIWS de <i>Vancouver.<\/i> \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab J&#8217;ai partag\u00e9 mes connaissances avec les responsables de la maintenance, notamment les techniques de proc\u00e9dures de maintenance, les produits que je pr\u00e9f\u00e8re utiliser et les zones qui n\u00e9cessitent une attention particuli\u00e8re pour maintenir le syst\u00e8me en bonne sant\u00e9, \u00bb a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Mat1 Koerten.<\/p>\n<p>La phase terrestre du RIMPAC pr\u00e9voyait des \u00e9volutions sur plusieurs ponts, et l&#8217;\u00e9quipage de <i>Vancouver<\/i> a saisi toutes les occasions de travailler avec les nations partenaires et les alli\u00e9s. L&#8217;entra\u00eenement en dehors des \u00e9volutions RIMPAC pr\u00e9vues a non seulement am\u00e9lior\u00e9 la capacit\u00e9 du navire \u00e0 assurer l&#8217;interop\u00e9rabilit\u00e9 entre les nations, mais a \u00e9galement permis de nouer de nouvelles amiti\u00e9s et de renforcer les anciennes.
