Family and friends were in a celebratory mood as they streamed down to Her Majesty\u2019s Canadian Dockyard on the morning of July 15 \u2014 they were looking forward to welcoming their loved ones home as HMCS <\/span>Halifax<\/span><\/i> en <\/span>Montr\u00e9al<\/span><\/i> sailed back into Halifax harbour, home from deployment.<\/span><\/p>\n

The added pressure of this particular deployment, due to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, meant families were especially relieved to welcome home loved ones. <\/span><\/i>LA CPL SARINA KUZMA<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The two ships had been taking part in Operation Reassurance, Canada\u2019s contribution to NATO assurance and deterrence measures in Central and Eastern Europe. It was the first Operation Reassurance mission for HMCS <\/span>Montr\u00e9al<\/span><\/i>, which left in January to join Standing NATO Maritime Group Two, and the third for <\/span>Halifax<\/span><\/i>, which left in March and formed part of Standing NATO Maritime Group One.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both ships were supported by embarked CH-148 Cyclone helicopter air detachments.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since 2014, the Royal Canadian Navy has been supporting NATO\u2019s Maritime Command by deploying a warship, on a rotational basis, for exercises and operational tasks. When Russia\u2019s attack on Ukraine began on February 24, however, \u201cthe pressure was much higher this year,\u201d said Rear-Admiral Brian Santarpia, Commander of Maritime Forces Atlantic (MARLANT) and Joint Task Force Atlantic, who came down to the jetty to greet the ships as they arrived.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAfter the invasion of Ukraine in February, the government of Canada decided that we needed to send a stronger message to our NATO allies so we had two ships away at the same time,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re coming home after a very successful mission where Canada proved its value as an ally. Where Canadian sailors and aviators and soldiers onboard did an outstanding job\u2026 The entire team did Canada proud.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Cheers rang out as the two ships pulled up alongside \u2014 first <\/span>Montr\u00e9al<\/span><\/i> and then <\/span>Halifax<\/span><\/i> just over five minutes later.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Senior leadership from MARLANT and Canadian Fleet Atlantic, as well as local dignitaries, mingled in the crowd \u2014 chatting with families and crew members as they disembarked.<\/span><\/p>\n

After hugging his family, Captain Alex Manderson, who was deployed with HMCS <\/span>Montr\u00e9al<\/span><\/i>, bent down to pin My Little Hero medals on each of his three children, while his wife, Theresa, looked on.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been hard having him gone for so long,\u201d Theresa said. \u201cI\u2019m so glad he\u2019s back home with us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other side of the jetty, Tim Clayton was waiting for his son, S1 Elliott Clayton, to come down the gangway off HMCS <\/span>Halifax<\/span><\/i>. Just in case his son had any illusions of hanging out and resting after being away so long, his dad was carrying a big sign to indicate he has other plans.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWelcome Home Elliott,\u201d the sign reads. \u201cDad needs help cutting the grass.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Continuing Canada\u2019s commitment to NATO\u2019s <\/span>assurance and deterrence measures in European waters<\/span>, HMCS <\/span>Kingston<\/span><\/i> en <\/span>Summerside<\/span><\/i> left Halifax on June 26, marking the first deployment on Operation Reassurance for the Kingston-class Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDV).<\/span><\/p>\n

They arrived in Kiel, Germany on July 16 to join Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group One and begin operations in the Baltic Sea. They are scheduled back in October.<\/span><\/p>\n

Les familles et les amis \u00e9taient d’humeur festive lorsqu’ils ont afflu\u00e9 \u00e0 l’arsenal canadien de Sa Majest\u00e9 le matin du 15 juillet. Ils avaient h\u00e2te d’accueillir leurs proches \u00e0 la maison alors que les NCSM <\/span>Halifax<\/span><\/i> et <\/span>Montr\u00e9al<\/span><\/i> rentraient dans le port d’Halifax, apr\u00e8s leur d\u00e9ploiement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Les deux navires avaient pris part \u00e0 l’op\u00e9ration Reassurance, la contribution du Canada aux mesures d’assurance et de dissuasion de l’OTAN en Europe centrale et orientale. Il s’agissait de la premi\u00e8re mission de l’op\u00e9ration Reassurance pour le NCSM Montr\u00e9al, qui est parti en janvier pour se joindre au 2e Groupe maritime permanent de l’OTAN, et de la troisi\u00e8me pour le Halifax, qui est parti en mars pour faire partie du 1er Groupe maritime permanent de l’OTAN.<\/span><\/p>\n

Les deux navires \u00e9taient soutenus par des d\u00e9tachements a\u00e9riens d’h\u00e9licopt\u00e8res CH-148 Cyclone embarqu\u00e9s.<\/span><\/p>\n

Depuis 2014, la Marine royale canadienne soutient le Commandement maritime de l’OTAN en d\u00e9ployant un navire de guerre, par rotation, pour des exercices et des t\u00e2ches op\u00e9rationnelles. Toutefois, lorsque l’attaque de la Russie contre l’Ukraine a commenc\u00e9 le 24 f\u00e9vrier, \u00ab la pression \u00e9tait beaucoup plus forte cette ann\u00e9e \u00ab, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le contre-amiral Brian Santarpia, commandant des Forces maritimes de l’Atlantique (FMAR(A)) et de la Force op\u00e9rationnelle interarm\u00e9es de l’Atlantique, qui est descendu sur la jet\u00e9e pour accueillir les navires \u00e0 leur arriv\u00e9e.<\/span><\/p>\n

O\u00f9 les marins, aviateurs et soldats canadiens \u00e0 bord ont fait un travail remarquable… Toute l’\u00e9quipe a fait honneur au Canada. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

LA CPL SARINA KUZMA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Des acclamations ont retenti lorsque les deux navires se sont approch\u00e9s l’un de l’autre, d’abord \u00e0 <\/span>Montr\u00e9al<\/span><\/i>, puis \u00e0 <\/span>Halifax<\/span><\/i>, un peu plus de cinq minutes plus tard.<\/span><\/p>\n

Les hauts dirigeants des FMAR(A) et de la Flotte canadienne de l’Atlantique, ainsi que des dignitaires locaux, se sont m\u00eal\u00e9s \u00e0 la foule, discutant avec les familles et les membres d’\u00e9quipage \u00e0 mesure qu’ils d\u00e9barquaient.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s avoir serr\u00e9 sa famille dans ses bras, le Capitaine Alex Manderson, qui \u00e9tait d\u00e9ploy\u00e9 avec le NCSM <\/span>Montr\u00e9al<\/span><\/i>, s’est pench\u00e9 pour \u00e9pingler des m\u00e9dailles My Little Hero \u00e0 chacun de ses trois enfants, sous le regard de sa femme, Theresa.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00abC’est dur de l’avoir perdu pendant si longtemps \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Theresa. \u00ab Je suis si heureuse qu’il soit de retour \u00e0 la maison avec nous. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

De l’autre c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la jet\u00e9e, Tim Clayton attendait que son fils, le Matelot de 1re classe Elliott Clayton, descende la passerelle du NCSM <\/span>Halifax<\/span><\/i>. Au cas o\u00f9 son fils aurait eu l’id\u00e9e de se reposer apr\u00e8s une si longue absence, son p\u00e8re portait un grand panneau indiquant qu’il avait d’autres plans.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00abBienvenue chez Elliott \u00bb, dit le panneau. \u00ab Papa a besoin d’aide pour couper le gazon. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

Poursuivant l’engagement du Canada envers les mesures d’assurance et de dissuasion de l’OTAN dans les eaux europ\u00e9ennes, les NCSM Kingston et Summerside ont quitt\u00e9 Halifax le 26 juin, marquant ainsi le premier d\u00e9ploiement dans le cadre de l’op\u00e9ration Reassurance des navires de d\u00e9fense c\u00f4ti\u00e8re (NDC) de la classe Kingston.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ils sont arriv\u00e9s \u00e0 Kiel, en Allemagne, le 16 juillet pour se joindre au 1er Groupe permanent de lutte contre les mines de l’OTAN et commencer leurs op\u00e9rations dans la mer Baltique. Leur retour est pr\u00e9vu en octobre.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
