Kingston-class ships head to Operation Reassurance<\/b><\/h3>\n

When HMCS Kingston<\/i> en Summerside<\/i> left Halifax on Sunday, June 26, their departure marked a milestone for the Royal Canadian Navy, as the first deployment on Operation Reassurance for Kingston-class Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDV).<\/p>\n

Both ships are headed to the Baltic Sea and North Atlantic region to join Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1, in support of NATO assurance and deterrence measures in Europe, for a four-month deployment.<\/p>\n

Le NCSM Halifax<\/i> et Montreal<\/i> are both currently deployed on Operation Reassurance and will return to Canada in July. The move to send two further vessels demonstrates Canada\u2019s continued commitment to NATO, said Captain (Navy) Julian Elbourne, Chief of Staff, Maritime Forces Atlantic Command.<\/p>\n

“About nine months ago, we started looking at other options as to how we could support the NATO alliance. The idea came up to deploy two MCDVs in the mine countermeasures role, which is an important role within the alliance. These two ships\u2019 companies have worked very hard to prepare for this very important mission.\u201d<\/p>\n

Le NCSM Summerside<\/i> will deploy with an embarked RCN clearance diving team, supported by mine countermeasure search capabilities using autonomous underwater vehicles aboard HMCS Kingston<\/i>.<\/p>\n

In his remarks to the crowd of family members and other supporters gathered on the jetty to watch the ships leave, Lieutenant-Commander Jason Knowles, Commanding Officer of HMCS Kingston<\/i>, talked about the upcoming deployment and the importance of international partnerships \u2014 reflecting on an \u201caha moment\u201d he recently had while watching his daughter and wife take part in a dress rehearsal for the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was watching all these performers and international acts\u2026 and thinking about the importance of partnerships in building community,\u201d he said. \u201cReassurance is a partnership that creates an international community and our involvement with NATO allows us to contribute to that international community \u2013 to contribute to our safety and security, and that of our allies, and to reassure our allies that we stand with them, now more than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking around at the families and other supporters gathered to say goodbye to the two departing ships, Commander Jeffrey Anderson, Commanding Officer of HMCS Summerside<\/i>, thanked the many people who helped get the ships ready for deployment and continue to provide ongoing support \u2014 in particular the Halifax and Region Military Family Resource Centre for their role in assisting family members<\/p>\n

Reid and Bonnie Conrad have volunteered with the Halifax & Region Military Family Resource Centre for the past seven years, attending ship departures and handing out resource packs for family members, to let them know that support is available to them.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether it\u2019s your first time or you\u2019ve said goodbye to your loved one many times, it\u2019s hard. I get emotional just thinking about it\u2026 we try to take the time to talk to people and connect with them. Let them know they\u2019re not alone,\u201d Reid said.<\/p>\n

The ships are expected back in Halifax in October.<\/p>\n

Les deux navires se dirigent vers la mer Baltique et la r\u00e9gion de l’Atlantique Nord pour rejoindre le Groupe permanent de lutte contre les mines de l’OTAN 1 \u00e0 l’appui des mesures d’assurance et de dissuasion de l’OTAN en Europe, pour un d\u00e9ploiement de quatre mois.<\/p>\n

Les NCSM Halifax <\/i>et Montr\u00e9al<\/i> sont tous deux actuellement d\u00e9ploy\u00e9s dans le cadre de l’op\u00e9ration Reassurance et rentreront au Canada en juillet. La d\u00e9cision d’envoyer deux autres navires d\u00e9montre l’engagement continu du Canada envers l’OTAN, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le capitaine de vaisseau Julian Elbourne, chef d’\u00e9tat-major du Commandement des Forces maritimes de l’Atlantique.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Il y a environ neuf mois, nous avons commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 examiner d’autres options quant \u00e0 la fa\u00e7on dont nous pourrions soutenir l’alliance de l’OTAN. L’id\u00e9e est venue de d\u00e9ployer deux NDC dans le r\u00f4le de lutte contre les mines, qui est un r\u00f4le important au sein de l’alliance. Les \u00e9quipages de ces deux navires ont travaill\u00e9 tr\u00e8s fort pour se pr\u00e9parer \u00e0 cette mission tr\u00e8s importante.<\/p>\n

Le NCSM Summerside<\/i> se d\u00e9ploiera avec une \u00e9quipe de plong\u00e9e-d\u00e9mineur embarqu\u00e9e de la MRC, appuy\u00e9e par des capacit\u00e9s de recherche de contre-mesures de mines \u00e0 l’aide de v\u00e9hicules sous-marins autonomes \u00e0 bord du NCSM Kingston<\/i>.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Je regardais tous ces artistes et ces num\u00e9ros internationaux… et je pensais \u00e0 l’importance des partenariats pour b\u00e2tir une communaut\u00e9 \u00ab, a-t-il dit. \u00abLa r\u00e9assurance est un partenariat qui cr\u00e9e une communaut\u00e9 internationale et notre participation \u00e0 l’OTAN nous permet de contribuer \u00e0 cette communaut\u00e9 internationale – de contribuer \u00e0 notre s\u00e9curit\u00e9 et \u00e0 celle de nos alli\u00e9s, et de rassurer nos alli\u00e9s sur le fait que nous sommes \u00e0 leurs c\u00f4t\u00e9s, maintenant plus que jamais. \u00bb<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

En regardant les familles et les autres partisans r\u00e9unis pour dire au revoir aux deux navires en partance, le Capitaine de fr\u00e9gate Jeffrey Anderson, commandant du NCSM Summerside<\/i>, a remerci\u00e9 les nombreuses personnes qui ont aid\u00e9 \u00e0 pr\u00e9parer les navires pour le d\u00e9ploiement et qui continuent \u00e0 fournir un soutien continu – en particulier le Centre de ressources pour les familles des militaires de la r\u00e9gion de Halifax pour son r\u00f4le dans l’aide aux membres des familles.<\/p>\n

Reid et Bonnie Conrad sont b\u00e9n\u00e9voles au Centre de ressources pour les familles des militaires de Halifax et de la r\u00e9gion depuis sept ans. Ils assistent aux d\u00e9parts des navires et distribuent des trousses de ressources aux membres des familles, afin de leur faire savoir qu’ils peuvent obtenir du soutien.<\/p>\n
