Le NCSM <\/b>Margaret Brooke<\/i><\/b> completes warm weather trials ahead of Op Nanook deployment<\/b><\/h3>\n

Her Majesty\u2019s Canadian Ship (HMCS) <\/span>Margaret Brooke<\/span><\/i> returned to its homeport of Halifax on May 26 after nearly a month of warm weather trials, part of the post-acceptance program to demonstrate that the ship can operate safely in both the icy Arctic waters and the warm southern seas.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe were seeking air temperatures at a maximum of 35 degrees Celsius and a sea water temperature of 29 degrees Celsius. So we knew we had to go south, the question was how south did we need to go?\u201d explained Lt(N) Jennifer Grant, Information Management Officer with HMCS <\/span>Margaret Brooke<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

After keeping a close eye on weather conditions to come up with a sailing plan, they ended up conducting the trials in the waters off Nassau, Bahamas, and Key West Florida.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEverything went really well,\u201d said Lt(N) Grant. \u201cWe weren\u2019t able to get to the exact temperatures we were looking for, but we were very close.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Like the cold weather and ice trials, the warm weather trial program is designed to test various ship systems in different conditions, such as the ability to cool the engines and deal with humidity through the heating, ventilation and air cooling (HVAC) system.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re monitoring the engine room\u2026 monitoring the temperature and how well the HVAC system is able to cool, and ensure enough ventilation to keep things cool without creating condensation,\u201d said Lt(N) Grant.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ship responded well to the various trials, and the crew was able to identify small issues, like one involving the converters operating at a high rpm (revolutions per minute), which created a domino effect with some other systems.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we were ramping the rpm for the shaft up, it increased the temperature in the engine spaces. That was handled adequately enough by our HVAC system, but the cooling of the converter was so fast that it created\u2026 a risk of condensation, and the system \u2014 being as automated as it is \u2014 picks that up and sends it into an alarm that would then lock out the shafts,\u201d explained Lt(N) Grant.<\/span><\/p>\n

MS Matthew Keenan was part of the team that dealt with the problem, reaching out to In-Service Support (ISS) and Irving Shipbuilding personnel to figure out a fix.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMS Keenan is one of our main guys in engineering, one of the main leaders,\u201d said Lt(N) Grant. \u201cIt\u2019s those types of problem-solving issues that we\u2019re testing because, obviously, we don\u2019t want the system to go into red. That\u2019s part of the purpose of the trial, to identify where we have those problematic things and how we \u2014 together with the contractor, ISS and FMF (Fleet Maintenance Facility Cape Scott) \u2014 can approach it to either rectify the problem or tweak the system.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As Senior Mechanical Specialist onboard <\/span>Margaret Brooke<\/span><\/i>, MS Keenan stays in touch with the mechanical and electrical managers to help determine what work needs to be done during the ship\u2019s various work periods.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI add my recommendations to the priority list for the items that need to be rectified sooner rather than later,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

He\u2019s also one of the few personnel holding an engineering watchkeeping qualification for the Harry DeWolf class, and was commended for working hard to set up drills for junior personnel, liaising with the ship\u2019s engineer and Naval Personnel and Training Group (NPTG).<\/span><\/p>\n

Having more junior personnel working through engineering watchkeeping training for their ticket, made for \u201cmore experience behind the chair\u201d when they sailed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBecause we \u2014 as a team \u2014 pushed so hard, we were absolutely set up for success in the warm weather trials,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

With these latest trials wrapped up, <\/span>Margaret Brooke<\/span><\/i> is a step closer to its commissioning, scheduled to take place this fall. The ship and crew will be staying busy until then; after finishing a short work period they\u2019ll be back to sea in late July, in preparation for Operation Nanook in August and September.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le navire canadien de Sa Majest\u00e9 (NCSM) <\/span>Margaret Brooke<\/span><\/i> est retourn\u00e9 \u00e0 son port d’attache de Halifax le 26 mai apr\u00e8s pr\u00e8s d’un mois d’essais par temps chaud, dans le cadre du programme post-acceptation visant \u00e0 d\u00e9montrer que le navire peut fonctionner en toute s\u00e9curit\u00e9 dans les eaux glac\u00e9es de l’Arctique et dans les mers chaudes du Sud.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/b>Nous recherchions des temp\u00e9ratures de l’air d’un maximum de 35 degr\u00e9s Celsius et une temp\u00e9rature de l’eau de mer de 29 degr\u00e9s Celsius. Nous savions donc que nous devions aller vers le sud, mais nous ne savions pas jusqu’o\u00f9 aller \u00bb, explique le Ltv Jennifer Grant, officier de gestion de l’information du NCSM <\/span>Margaret Brooke<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s avoir surveill\u00e9 de pr\u00e8s les conditions m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques pour \u00e9tablir un plan de navigation, ils ont fini par effectuer les essais dans les eaux au large de Nassau, aux Bahamas, et de Key West, en Floride.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/b>Tout s’est tr\u00e8s bien pass\u00e9\u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Ltv Grant. <\/span>\u00ab<\/b>Nous n’avons pas pu atteindre les temp\u00e9ratures exactes que nous recherchions, mais nous en \u00e9tions tr\u00e8s proches.\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

Comme les essais par temps froid et par temps de glace, le programme d’essais par temps chaud est con\u00e7u pour tester divers syst\u00e8mes du navire dans diff\u00e9rentes conditions, comme la capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 refroidir les moteurs et \u00e0 g\u00e9rer l’humidit\u00e9 gr\u00e2ce au syst\u00e8me de chauffage, de ventilation et de refroidissement de l’air (CVCA).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/b>Ils surveillent la salle des machines… ils surveillent la temp\u00e9rature et la capacit\u00e9 du syst\u00e8me CVC \u00e0 refroidir et \u00e0 assurer une ventilation suffisante pour garder les choses froides sans cr\u00e9er de condensation\u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Ltv Grant.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bien que le navire ait bien r\u00e9pondu aux divers essais, il a rencontr\u00e9 quelques probl\u00e8mes avec les convertisseurs \u00e0 des r\u00e9volutions plus \u00e9lev\u00e9es par minute, ce qui a cr\u00e9\u00e9 un effet domino avec certains autres syst\u00e8mes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/b>Lorsque nous avons mont\u00e9 en puissance, la temp\u00e9rature dans les espaces moteurs a augment\u00e9. Notre syst\u00e8me de chauffage, de ventilation et de climatisation (CVC) s’en chargeait assez bien, mais le refroidissement du convertisseur \u00e9tait si rapide qu’il cr\u00e9ait un risque de condensation. Le syst\u00e8me automatis\u00e9 d\u00e9clenche alors une alarme\u00bb, explique le Ltv Grant.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le Matc Matthew Keenan a fait partie de l’\u00e9quipe qui s’est occup\u00e9e du probl\u00e8me, en contactant le personnel de SES (services de soutien en service) et de Irving Shipbuilding pour trouver une solution.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/b>C’est le type de r\u00e9solution de probl\u00e8me que nous testons parce que, \u00e9videmment, nous ne voulons pas que le syst\u00e8me passe au rouge. Cela fait partie de l’objectif de l’essai, qui consiste \u00e0 identifier les probl\u00e8mes et \u00e0 d\u00e9terminer comment nous – avec l’entrepreneur, SES et le L\u2019IMF Cape Scott – pouvons aborder la question pour rectifier le probl\u00e8me ou modifier le syst\u00e8me.\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

En tant que sp\u00e9cialiste principal en m\u00e9canique \u00e0 bord du <\/span>Margaret Brooke<\/span><\/i>, le MS Keenan reste en contact avec les responsables de la m\u00e9canique et de l’\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 pour aider \u00e0 d\u00e9terminer les travaux \u00e0 effectuer pendant les diff\u00e9rentes p\u00e9riodes de travail du navire.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/b>J’ajoute mes recommandations \u00e0 la liste des priorit\u00e9s pour les \u00e9l\u00e9ments qui doivent \u00eatre rectifi\u00e9s le plus t\u00f4t possible,\u00bb a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n

Avec ces derniers essais termin\u00e9s, le <\/span>Margaret Brooke<\/span><\/i> se rapproche un peu plus de sa mise en service, pr\u00e9vue pour cet automne. Le navire et l’\u00e9quipage resteront occup\u00e9s d’ici l\u00e0 ; apr\u00e8s une courte p\u00e9riode de travail, ils reprendront la mer fin juillet, en vue de l’op\u00e9ration Nanook en ao\u00fbt et septembre.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
