NATO’s maritime task group concluded its third round of focused patrols in the Western Mediterranean Sea as part of NATO’s Operation Sea Guardian (OSG) on May 12.<\/p>\n
Led by NATO Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) in Northwood, OSG is a fusion of information designed to create a comprehensive picture of daily activities in the Mediterranean.\u00a0 OSG units comprised flagship Italian Navy patrol vessel ITS Borsini (P491), supported by a submarine from Portugal, as well as air units from Canada, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Turkey.<\/p>\n
“Effective coordination and communication between all participating units led to a very successful round of focused patrols,” Commander Nicasio Falica, Italian Navy, Task Group Commander. “These patrols help NATO provide a broad picture of the maritime environment in the Western Mediterranean Sea to all seafarers. They help us understand the most up-to-date patterns of life in the region, enhancing situational awareness for everyone.”<\/p>\n
At the end of the patrols, ITS Borsini conducted a port visit to Algiers, Algeria, one of NATO’s partner Nations via the Mediterranean Dialogue (MD) framework. NATO staff met with the Algerian Navy Commander of the Central Maritime Zone, visited the Central Museum of the Army, and hosted the Italian ambassador to Algeria. The visit strengthened NATO’s partnership and cooperation with Algeria in the maritime security domain.<\/p>\n
NATO’s Operation Sea Guardian remains one of the most important tools for NATO to increase cooperation and interoperability with Allies and Partner nations in the Mediterranean Sea and to enhance capacity building in the frame of maritime security. These focused patrols contribute to maintain maritime situational awareness, to deter terrorism and mitigate the risk of threats to security in the Mediterranean Sea.<\/p>\n

Dirig\u00e9e par le Commandement maritime alli\u00e9 de l’OTAN (MARCOM) \u00e0 Northwood, l’OSG est une fusion d’informations destin\u00e9e \u00e0 dresser un tableau complet des activit\u00e9s quotidiennes en M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e.\u00a0 Les unit\u00e9s de l’OSG comprenaient le navire de patrouille amiral de la marine italienne ITS Borsini (P491), soutenu par un sous-marin du Portugal, ainsi que des unit\u00e9s a\u00e9riennes du Canada, de la Gr\u00e8ce, de l’Italie, du Portugal, de l’Espagne et de la Turquie.<\/p>\n
\u00abUne coordination et une communication efficaces entre toutes les unit\u00e9s participantes ont permis de mener \u00e0 bien une s\u00e9rie de patrouilles cibl\u00e9es\u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le commandant Nicasio Falica, de la marine italienne, commandant du groupe op\u00e9rationnel. \u00abCes patrouilles aident l’OTAN \u00e0 fournir \u00e0 tous les marins une image globale de l’environnement maritime en M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e occidentale. Elles nous aident \u00e0 comprendre les sch\u00e9mas de vie les plus r\u00e9cents dans la r\u00e9gion, ce qui am\u00e9liore la connaissance de la situation pour tout le monde.\u00bb<\/p>\n
\u00c0 la fin des patrouilles, l’ITS Borsini a effectu\u00e9 une visite portuaire \u00e0 Alger, en Alg\u00e9rie, l’un des pays partenaires de l’OTAN dans le cadre du Dialogue m\u00e9diterran\u00e9en (DM). Le personnel de l’OTAN a rencontr\u00e9 le commandant de la zone maritime centrale de la marine alg\u00e9rienne, visit\u00e9 le mus\u00e9e central de l’arm\u00e9e et accueilli l’ambassadeur d’Italie en Alg\u00e9rie. Cette visite a permis de renforcer le partenariat et la coop\u00e9ration de l’OTAN avec l’Alg\u00e9rie dans le domaine de la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 maritime.<\/p>\n
L’op\u00e9ration Sea Guardian de l’OTAN reste l’un des outils les plus importants dont dispose l’OTAN pour accro\u00eetre la coop\u00e9ration et l’interop\u00e9rabilit\u00e9 avec les Alli\u00e9s et les pays partenaires en M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e et pour renforcer les capacit\u00e9s dans le cadre de la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 maritime.
