When the Stadacona Band posted a video clip of the newly formed Celtic ensemble playing an Irish folk tune on the band\u2019s Facebook page recently, it generated a bit of buzz, racking up more than 6,000 views in the following days.<\/p>\n

\u201cCeltic music is very well loved here on the East Coast,\u201d said S1 Mark Morton, a percussionist with the Stadacona Band and the ensemble coordinator. \u201cActually, because this audience knows the music so well, there was some apprehension about forming the ensemble.\u201d<\/p>\n

The four members of the ensemble are PO1 Charmaine Chaddock, who plays tin whistle and occasionally spoons; PO1 Larry Bjornson on bass and guitar; PO2 Jeff Brancato playing mandolin, Irish bouzouki and guitar; and S1 Morton on violin and mandolin. All \u2014 with the exception of PO1 Bjornson \u2014 playing secondary instruments.<\/p>\n

While the band has performed in the past with many Celtic-inspired arrangements and played with East Coast musicians, such as Scott Macmillan and Dave MacIsaac, the idea of forming a dedicated Celtic ensemble first came up at a Christmas party back in 2018. It wasn\u2019t until a year and a half later that it really took hold.<\/p>\n

Casting about for a project to work on during the initial \u201clockdown\u201d phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020, S1 Morton and some other band members returned to the ensemble idea.<\/p>\n

Knowing the band had two \u201cnice old violins from the 1800s\u201d in its inventory, S1 Morton took one home to try out.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had taken violin lessons as a kid but when I first tried it again, I had to relearn everything\u2026 I felt like I was 10 years old again,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Still working to improve his proficiency on the violin, S1 Morton also purchased a mandolin. After spending some time \u201cfiddling around\u201d with the two instruments, he and the other three members of the new ensemble began sending each other song ideas and YouTube clips to try.<\/p>\n

Drawing from the deep well of Celtic and traditional folk music, the group assembled a small repertoire of songs, some instrumental and some with vocals, with each of the members rehearsing mostly on their own at the beginning and in person whenever possible, depending on restrictions and work schedules.<\/p>\n

Given the persistent COVID-19 situation, logistically it made more sense for the band to focus their efforts on smaller groupings, such as the brass and woodwind quintets, and the smaller jazz ensembles, as many of the activities that would have involved the regular band \u2014 things like change of command ceremonies, ship arrivals and departures, concerts and other public events \u2014 have been limited during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how the Celtic ensemble got their debut last October \u2014 where they played two sets at the gala celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Cape Breton Highlanders Regiment, held in Sydney, NS.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing like jumping into the deep end for your first performance. It was well received but I figure there\u2019s no tougher audience than that,\u201d said S1 Morton.<\/p>\n

Now that the group can practice together in person more consistently, S1 Morton said they\u2019re looking forward to playing at more events. There\u2019s just one snag\u2026 the ensemble doesn\u2019t have an official name yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re looking for name suggestions, something with a naval theme, of course,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Lorsque la Musique Stadacona a publi\u00e9 r\u00e9cemment sur sa page Facebook un vid\u00e9oclip de l\u2019ensemble celtique nouvellement form\u00e9 en train de jouer l\u2019air folklorique irlandais \u00ab\u00a0S\u00ed Beag, S\u00ed Mh\u00f3r\u00a0\u00bb, ce dernier a suscit\u00e9 un certain engouement et a \u00e9t\u00e9 visionn\u00e9 plus de 6\u00a0000 fois dans les jours qui ont suivi.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0La musique celtique est tr\u00e8s pris\u00e9e ici sur la c\u00f4te Est\u00a0\u00bb, d\u00e9clare le Mat 1 Mark Morton, un percussionniste de la Musique Stadacona et le coordonnateur de l\u2019ensemble. \u00ab\u00a0En fait, comme le public conna\u00eet si bien cette musique, nous avions une certaine appr\u00e9hension \u00e0 former l\u2019ensemble.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

Alors qu\u2019ils \u00e9taient en qu\u00eate d\u2019un projet sur lequel travailler pendant la phase initiale de \u00ab\u00a0confinement\u00a0\u00bb de la pand\u00e9mie de COVID-19 au printemps 2020, le Mat 1 Morton et quelques autres membres du groupe sont revenus \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e de l\u2019ensemble.<\/p>\n

Comme le groupe avait dans son inventaire deux \u00ab\u00a0beaux violons anciens des ann\u00e9es 1800\u00a0\u00bb, le Mat 1 Morton en a ramen\u00e9 un chez lui pour l\u2019essayer.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Enfant, je suivais des cours de violon, mais lorsque j\u2019ai voulu m\u2019y remettre, j\u2019ai d\u00fb tout r\u00e9apprendre\u2026 J\u2019avais l\u2019impression d\u2019avoir \u00e0 nouveau dix ans\u00a0\u00bb, dit-il.<\/p>\n

Alors qu\u2019il cherchait toujours \u00e0 am\u00e9liorer sa ma\u00eetrise du violon, le Mat 1 Morton s\u2019est \u00e9galement achet\u00e9 une mandoline. Apr\u00e8s avoir pass\u00e9 un certain temps \u00e0 \u00ab\u00a0manipuler\u00a0\u00bb les deux instruments, lui et trois membres du nouvel ensemble ont commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 se communiquer des m\u00e9lodies et des vid\u00e9oclips sur YouTube \u00e0 essayer.<\/p>\n

En puisant dans le vaste r\u00e9pertoire de la musique celtique et de la musique folklorique traditionnelle, le groupe a constitu\u00e9 un petit r\u00e9pertoire de m\u00e9lodies, dont certaines sont instrumentales et d\u2019autres vocales. Au d\u00e9but, chacun des membres r\u00e9p\u00e9tait surtout seul, puis en personne chaque fois que cela \u00e9tait possible, en fonction des restrictions et des horaires de travail.<\/p>\n

Compte tenu de la situation persistante de la COVID-19,\u00a0 il \u00e9tait plus judicieux, d\u2019un point de vue logistique, que la Musique concentre ses efforts sur de plus petits groupes, comme les quintettes de cuivres et de bois, et les plus petits ensembles de jazz, puisqu\u2019un bon nombre d\u2019activit\u00e9s auquel aurait particip\u00e9 l\u2019orchestre r\u00e9gulier \u2013 notamment les c\u00e9r\u00e9monies de passation de commandement, les arriv\u00e9es et les d\u00e9parts de navires, les concerts et autres \u00e9v\u00e9nements publics \u2013 ont \u00e9t\u00e9 limit\u00e9es pendant la pand\u00e9mie.<\/p>\n

C\u2019est ainsi que l\u2019ensemble celtique a fait ses d\u00e9buts en octobre dernier \u2013 en jouant deux morceaux lors du gala en l\u2019honneur du 150e anniversaire du Cape Breton Highlanders Regiment, qui s\u2019est tenu \u00e0 Sydney, en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Il n\u2019y a rien de tel que se jeter \u00e0 l\u2019eau lors de sa premi\u00e8re prestation. Elle a bien \u00e9t\u00e9 accueillie, mais je crois qu\u2019il n\u2019y a pas de public plus difficile que celui-l\u00e0\u00a0\u00bb, d\u00e9clare le Mat 1 Morton.<\/p>\n

Maintenant que le groupe peut se r\u00e9unir en personne pour r\u00e9p\u00e9ter de fa\u00e7on plus r\u00e9guli\u00e8re, le Mat 1 Morton dit que l\u2019ensemble a h\u00e2te de pouvoir jouer \u00e0 un plus grand nombre d\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nements. Il y a juste un hic\u2026 L\u2019ensemble ne porte pas encore de nom officiel.<\/p>\n
