This date was chosen in commemoration of the day that 69 South Africans lost their lives during a peaceful demonstration against apartheid \u201cpass laws\u201d back in 1960.<\/p>\n<p>Today, 62 years later, we continue to recognize the injustices faced by global citizens at home and abroad as a result of racial discrimination. This is not something to celebrate in 2022, but is a truth that needs to be acknowledged so that we can reflect on the continued work that needs to be done to eliminate racially discriminatory practices and behaviors within our workplaces and our communities.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no secret that combatting racial discrimination in all its forms can seem daunting, but every action we take as individuals and as a team will help. Here are just a few ways that you can become an active participant:<\/p>\n<p>(1)<b> Listen:<\/b> Give time and space to listen those who are willing to open up about their lived experiences with racism and discrimination. Take the time to openly receive their perspective, withholding any judgment.\u00a0 While you listen, be aware that you may very well be listening from a place of privilege and that you are most likely experiencing this information while trying to manage your own conscious or unconscious bias.\u00a0 Never expect someone to provide insight into their lived experience, but thank them if they are ready and willing to do so.<\/p>\n<p>(2)<b> Learn:<\/b> Consume news, books, podcasts and films delivered from a diverse range of perspectives. Take advantage of the free and accessible training programs and courses offered through the Canada School of Public Service such as the Anti-Racism Learning Series.<\/p>\n<p>(3)<b> Act:<\/b> Speak up (respectfully) if you observe discriminatory practices in the workplace or in your community. Talk to your supervisor, a helping professional, a trusted friend or a family member about the experience. Recognize others who are actively combatting discriminatory behavior by thanking them for modeling positive actions. Assess your own actions, both past and present, and be willing to acknowledge your own failures while committing to growth and change. Repeat these actions in perpetuity and watch the momentum build.<\/p>\n<p>(4)<b> Get involved:<\/b> Here on Base, we have a number of Defence advisory groups that provide advice to DND\/CAF leadership on the relevant issues faced by Defence Team members who have diverse backgrounds, abilities and gender identities. These groups are made up of dedicated volunteers that organize outreach initiatives; shares educational tools; assists in policy development; promotes maximum participation in self-identification; and recommends concreate solutions to systemic workplace barriers. When it comes to matters of racial discrimination, I encourage you to get involved with either the MARLANT DVMAG (<a href=\"mailto:Halifax.DVMAG@forces.gc.ca\">Halifax.DVMAG@forces.gc.ca<\/a>) or the Atlantic Defence Aboriginal Advisory Group (ADAAG) (<a href=\"mailto:Halifax.DAAG@forces.gc.ca\">Halifax.DAAG@forces.gc.ca<\/a>). All Defence Team members are welcome!<\/p>\n<p>As members of a strong and united Defence Team, we can empower one another to take these actions as we continue to foster a workplace where everyone feels safe and respected.<\/p>\n<p>One thing that I have learned personally through listening, learning, acting and getting involved is that racial discrimination is not a one-size-fits-all issue. No two individuals or racialized communities share the same challenges, therefore we cannot assume that a single solution can be applied across the board. As a Defence community, we must strive to understand these unique and varied challenges while committing to the hard work required to be part of a lasting solution.<\/p>\n<p>In closing, I want to thank the amazing MARLANT DVMAG co-chairs, Rene Gannon and S1 Saif Morsy, and all DVMAG members from whom I continue learning every day.\u00a0 I also want to commend all Defence Team members who are working to foster a safe and respectful workplace here at CFB Halifax.<\/p>\n<p>Although IDERD is commemorated on a single day, I encourage you all to take action against racism and discrimination every day of the year while finding ways to celebrate the incredible diversity within our Defence family and our communities. Cette date a \u00e9t\u00e9 choisie pour comm\u00e9morer ce jour de 1960 o\u00f9 69 Sud-Africains ont perdu la vie lors d\u2019une manifestation pacifique\u00a0 contre les lois relatives aux laissez-passer impos\u00e9es par l\u2019apartheid.<\/p>\n<p>Aujourd\u2019hui, 62 ans plus tard, nous continuons \u00e0 reconna\u00eetre les injustices auxquelles sont confront\u00e9s les citoyens du monde, chez eux et \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tranger, en raison de la discrimination raciale. Il ne s\u2019agit pas d\u2019un \u00e9v\u00e9nement \u00e0 c\u00e9l\u00e9brer en 2022, mais d\u2019une v\u00e9rit\u00e9 qui doit \u00eatre reconnue afin que nous puissions r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir aux efforts que nous devons d\u00e9ployer pour \u00e9liminer les pratiques et les comportements discriminatoires fond\u00e9s sur la race dans nos milieux de travail et nos communaut\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>Ce n\u2019est un secret pour personne que la lutte contre la discrimination raciale, sous toutes ses formes, peut sembler d\u00e9courageante, mais chaque mesure que nous prenons individuellement et en \u00e9quipe sera utile. Voici quelques exemples concrets des mesures que tout un chacun peut prendre :<\/p>\n<p>(1)<b> \u00c9couter.<\/b> Prenez le temps et la peine d\u2019\u00e9couter ceux qui sont pr\u00eats \u00e0 confier leur exp\u00e9rience du racisme et de la discrimination. Accueillez sans r\u00e9serve leur point de vue, en vous abstenant de tout jugement. Pendant que vous \u00e9coutez, soyez conscient que vous pouvez venir d\u2019un endroit privil\u00e9gi\u00e9 et que peut-\u00eatre vous \u00eates en train de vivre cette m\u00eame exp\u00e9rience tout en essayant de g\u00e9rer vos pr\u00e9jug\u00e9s conscients ou inconscients. Ne vous attendez jamais \u00e0 ce que les gens vous parlent de leur exp\u00e9rience personnelle, mais remerciez-les s\u2019ils sont pr\u00eats et dispos\u00e9s \u00e0 le faire.<\/p>\n<p>(2)<b> Se renseigner.<\/b> Tenez-vous au courant des nouvelles, lisez des livres, \u00e9coutez des balados et regardez des films provenant d\u2019un large \u00e9ventail de sources. Profitez des programmes et des cours de formation offerts gratuitement par l\u2019\u00c9cole de la fonction publique du Canada, comme la S\u00e9rie d\u2019apprentissage sur la lutte contre le racisme.<\/p>\n<p>(3)<b> Agir.<\/b> D\u00e9noncez (avec respect) les pratiques discriminatoires dont vous \u00eates t\u00e9moin au travail ou dans votre communaut\u00e9. Faites-en part \u00e0 votre superviseur, \u00e0 un professionnel du domaine, \u00e0 un ami en qui vous avez confiance ou \u00e0 un membre de votre famille. Remerciez les personnes qui luttent activement contre les comportements discriminatoires pour leurs actions positives. \u00c9valuez vos propres actions, pass\u00e9es et pr\u00e9sentes, et soyez pr\u00eat \u00e0 reconna\u00eetre vos propres \u00e9checs tout en vous engageant \u00e0 \u00e9voluer et \u00e0 changer. R\u00e9p\u00e9tez ces actions continuellement et voyez la dynamique s\u2019installer.<\/p>\n<p>(4) <b>Se mobiliser.<\/b> Nous avons ici, \u00e0 la base, un certain nombre de groupes consultatifs de la D\u00e9fense qui conseillent les dirigeants du MDN et des FAC sur les probl\u00e8mes pertinents auxquels font face les membres de l\u2019\u00c9quipe de la D\u00e9fense quels que soient leurs ant\u00e9c\u00e9dents, leurs comp\u00e9tences et leur orientation sexuelle. Ces groupes sont compos\u00e9s de b\u00e9n\u00e9voles d\u00e9vou\u00e9s qui organisent des activit\u00e9s de sensibilisation, offrent des outils \u00e9ducatifs, participent \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9laboration de politiques, favorisent une participation maximale au processus d\u2019autoidentification et recommandent des solutions concr\u00e8tes aux obstacles syst\u00e9miques en milieu de travail. En ce qui concerne les questions de discrimination raciale, je vous encourage \u00e0 vous joindre au GCMVD des FMAR(A) (<a href=\"mailto:Halifax.DVMAG@forces.gc.ca\">Halifax.DVMAG@forces.gc.ca<\/a>) ou au Groupe consultatif des Autochtones de la D\u00e9fense de l\u2019Atlantique (GCADA) (<a href=\"mailto:Halifax.DAAG@forces.gc.ca\">Halifax.DAAG@forces.gc.ca<\/a>). Tous les membres de l\u2019\u00c9quipe de la D\u00e9fense sont les bienvenus!<\/p>\n<p>En tant que membres d\u2019une \u00c9quipe de la D\u00e9fense forte et unie, nous pouvons nous donner les moyens de prendre ces mesures tout en continuant \u00e0 favoriser un milieu de travail o\u00f9 chacun se sent en s\u00e9curit\u00e9 et respect\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019une des choses que j\u2019ai apprises en \u00e9coutant, en me renseignant, en agissant et en me mobilisant est que la discrimination raciale n\u2019est pas un probl\u00e8me \u00e0 caract\u00e8re g\u00e9n\u00e9ral. Chaque personne ou chaque communaut\u00e9 racialis\u00e9e a ses propres difficult\u00e9s, et nous ne pouvons donc pas supposer qu\u2019une solution unique peut \u00eatre appliqu\u00e9e \u00e0 tous.\u00a0 En tant que communaut\u00e9 de la D\u00e9fense, nous devons nous efforcer de comprendre ces difficult\u00e9s uniques et vari\u00e9es tout en nous engageant \u00e0 d\u00e9ployer tous les efforts pour faire partie d\u2019une solution durable.<\/p>\n<p>En terminant, je tiens \u00e0 remercier les formidables copr\u00e9sidents du GCMVD des FMAR(A), Ren\u00e9 Gannon et le Mat 1 Saif Morsy, ainsi que tous les membres du groupe aupr\u00e8s desquels je ne cesse d\u2019apprendre chaque jour. Je tiens \u00e9galement \u00e0 f\u00e9liciter tous les membres de l\u2019\u00c9quipe de la D\u00e9fense qui s\u2019efforcent de favoriser un milieu de travail s\u00e9curitaire et respectueux ici \u00e0 la BFC Halifax.<\/p>\n<p>La JIEDR est comm\u00e9mor\u00e9e une fois par an certes, mais je vous encourage \u00e0 lutter contre le racisme et la discrimination tous les jours de l\u2019ann\u00e9e, tout en trouvant des moyens de c\u00e9l\u00e9brer l\u2019incroyable diversit\u00e9 au sein de la famille de la D\u00e9fense et de nos communaut\u00e9s.
