He ended up staying for 40 years and was coxswain of HMCS <em>Scotian<\/em>, the Naval Reserve Division in Halifax, not just once, but twice \u2014 in 1995 and again in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI stuck with it, I never thought I would when I started but there was such a sense of camaraderie, it was just amazing. In March 2001, he went back to part-time reserve life after he took on an electrician position, working on traffic signals for the city\u2019s transportation department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always thought I had the best of both worlds. I had my trade in the civilian world and as a bosun, I got to work on boats and have so many great experiences,\u201d he said. \u201cFor 20-odd years, I never really took a vacation\u2026 but I really, truly enjoyed my time in the reserves. I was truly inspired by the commitment, dedication and loyalty \u2014 as well as the hard work and sacrifice \u2014 people were willing to make for the organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There were difficult times too, said CPO1 (ret\u2019d) Hutt. When Swissair Flight 111 went down off the coast of Nova Scotia on September 2, 1998, HMCS <i>Kingston<\/i> was the ready duty ship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was coxswain with <i>Kingston<\/i> at the time and we were sailing out of the harbour within two hours of getting the call. We were the first ship on scene and we stayed at the Swissair site for almost two weeks,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was tough, we had a really young crew at the time. We tried to keep them from seeing the worst of it, but it was nearly impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The following year, CPO1 (ret\u2019d) Hutt was still with <i>Kingston<\/i>, the lead ship in its class, when they were the first Maritime Coastal Defence Vessel (MCDV) to cross the Atlantic in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>CPO1 Hutt retired on July 4, 2015.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cLearning the ropes\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Growing up in a military family, A\/SLt Emma Baines never imagined she would join the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) but as she was nearing completion of her BSc at Saint Mary\u2019s University in Halifax, she began to see it as a good option while she applied to medical school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was in this transition time but the application process for med school can be quite lengthy so I wanted to do something that would keep me feeling like I\u2019m moving forward. My dad was a big influence as he talked a lot about the benefits of being in the reserves. I decided to give it a shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joining HMCS <em>Scotian<\/em> in the spring of 2021, A\/SLt Baines spent much of last summer in training as she \u2014 and other new reservists \u2014 developed their knowledge and skills, and worked on \u201clearning the ropes\u201d of seamanship.<\/p>\n<p>At first, A\/SLt Baines kept it quiet that her dad is Vice-Admiral Craig Baines, Commander of the RCN, but word eventually got out. When he attended her promotion to her current rank last November, \u201cthe cat was definitely out of the bag,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to say, I\u2019m a lot more interested in hearing what he has to say about his work now than when I was growing up. It\u2019s given us a lot to talk about and I feel I can relate more to him now. It\u2019s been really good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While she still has medical education in her sights, A\/SLt Baines said she is mulling the possibility of joining the CAF full-time and becoming a medical officer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll see what happens. I know I want to stay involved. It\u2019s such a great experience and you meet people from so many different backgrounds from all across Canada. I&#8217;ve made some really close friends and could definitely see this becoming my career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cIt becomes who they are\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Having watched, and worked with, hundreds of\u00a0 young reservists over the years, CPO1 Peggy Bradford said people forge strong friendships as they work together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can keep them for more than five years, we have them for life. It offers so much in the way of opportunity and experience\u2026 those who stay, it becomes who they are,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Now Naval Reserve Support Branch Chief, CPO1 Bradford was coxswain with HMCS <em>Scotian<\/em> from May 2018 to July 2021 and celebrated 40 years of service with the Naval Reserve last summer.<\/p>\n<p>As HMCS Scotian approaches its 75th anniversary on April 23, 2022, CPO1 Bradford said she\u2019s been reflecting on milestones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s significant. It gives us a chance to celebrate and think about our longevity\u2026 we can see where we\u2019ve come from to get to where we are now.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><b>\u00catre un r\u00e9serviste \u00e0 bord du NCSM <\/b><b><i>Scotian<\/i><\/b><b>, c\u2019est le meilleur des deux mondes<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Par Joanie Veitch<br \/>\n<\/b>\u00c9quipe du Trident<\/p>\n<p>Quand le PM 1 (retrait\u00e9) David Hutt s\u2019est joint \u00e0 la R\u00e9serve navale en 1975, il pensait que ce ne serait que pour l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9. Il a fini par y rester pendant 40 ans et a servi comme capitaine d\u2019armes du NCSM <i>Scotian<\/i>, la division de la R\u00e9serve navale d\u2019Halifax, non pas une, mais bien deux fois, en 1995 et en 2002.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0J\u2019ai tenu bon, je n\u2019aurais jamais pens\u00e9 le faire quand j\u2019ai commenc\u00e9, mais il y avait un tel sens de la camaraderie, c\u2019\u00e9tait tout simplement incroyable. Je me suis fait tellement d\u2019amis pendant cette p\u00e9riode et j\u2019ai gard\u00e9 le contact avec beaucoup d\u2019entre eux pendant plus de 40 ans\u00a0\u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le PM 1 (retrait\u00e9) Hutt.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c9lectricien dans le civil, le PM 1 (retrait\u00e9) Hutt a servi \u00e0 temps plein pendant six ans, d\u2019abord \u00e0 la base d\u2019Halifax, puis comme capitaine d\u2019armes sur le NCSM <i>Kingston<\/i> et enfin au sein du Groupe d\u2019entra\u00eenement maritime de l\u2019Atlantique. En mars 2001, il a repris un horaire \u00e0 temps partiel dans la R\u00e9serve pour travailler sur les feux de circulation pour le service des transports de la ville.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0J\u2019ai toujours pens\u00e9 que j\u2019avais le meilleur des deux mondes. J\u2019avais mon m\u00e9tier dans le civil et je travaillais sur des bateaux comme man\u0153uvrier, ce qui m\u2019a permis de vivre de belles exp\u00e9riences. Pendant pr\u00e8s de 20 ans, je n\u2019ai jamais vraiment pris de vacances&#8230; mais j\u2019ai vraiment ador\u00e9 mon travail dans la R\u00e9serve. L\u2019engagement, le d\u00e9vouement et la loyaut\u00e9 du personnel, ainsi que les efforts incroyables et les sacrifices qu\u2019il \u00e9tait pr\u00eat \u00e0 faire pour l\u2019organisation, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 une v\u00e9ritable source d\u2019inspiration pour moi\u00a0\u00bb, a ajout\u00e9 le PM 1 (retrait\u00e9) Hutt.<\/p>\n<p>Il y a eu aussi des moments difficiles, a-t-il pr\u00e9cis\u00e9. Lorsque le vol 111 de Swissair s\u2019est \u00e9cras\u00e9 au large de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse le 2 septembre 1998, le NCSM <i>Kingston<\/i> \u00e9tait le navire de garde.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Nous avons quitt\u00e9 le port moins de deux heures apr\u00e8s avoir re\u00e7u l\u2019appel. Nous avons \u00e9t\u00e9 le premier navire sur les lieux de l\u2019\u00e9crasement et nous y sommes rest\u00e9s pendant pr\u00e8s de deux semaines. C\u2019\u00e9tait difficile, nous avions un \u00e9quipage tr\u00e8s jeune \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque. Nous avons essay\u00e9 de lui \u00e9pargner le pire, mais c\u2019\u00e9tait presque impossible\u00a0\u00bb, a-t-il affirm\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019ann\u00e9e suivante, le PM 1 (retrait\u00e9) Hutt \u00e9tait encore \u00e0 bord du <i>Kingston<\/i>, premier navire de sa classe, lorsque celui-ci est devenu le premier navire de d\u00e9fense c\u00f4ti\u00e8re (NDC) \u00e0 traverser l\u2019Atlantique en 1999.<\/p>\n<p>Le PM 1 Hutt a pris sa retraite le 4 juillet 2015.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00ab\u00a0Apprendre les ficelles du m\u00e9tier\u00a0\u00bb<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Ayant grandi dans une famille de militaires, l\u2019Ens 2 Emma Baines n\u2019avait jamais imagin\u00e9 qu\u2019elle s\u2019enr\u00f4lerait un jour dans les Forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes (FAC), mais alors qu\u2019elle \u00e9tait sur le point de terminer son baccalaur\u00e9at en sciences \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Saint Mary\u2019s \u00e0 Halifax et de pr\u00e9senter sa candidature pour faire des \u00e9tudes de m\u00e9decine, elle a constat\u00e9 que cela pouvait \u00eatre une bonne option.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Je me trouvais dans une p\u00e9riode de transition et, comme le processus de demande d\u2019admission \u00e0 la facult\u00e9 de m\u00e9decine peut \u00eatre assez long, je voulais faire quelque chose qui me donnerait l\u2019impression d\u2019avancer. Mon p\u00e8re me parlait abondamment des avantages d\u2019\u00eatre dans la R\u00e9serve et a donc \u00e9t\u00e9 pour beaucoup dans ma d\u00e9cision de tenter ma chance.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019Ens 2 Baines s\u2019est jointe \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9quipage du NCSM <i>Scotian<\/i> au printemps 2021. Elle a pass\u00e9 une bonne partie de l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 dernier \u00e0 s\u2019entra\u00eener avec d\u2019autres nouveaux r\u00e9servistes afin de perfectionner ses connaissances et ses comp\u00e9tences, et d\u2019apprendre les ficelles du m\u00e9tier de matelot.<\/p>\n<p>Au d\u00e9but, l\u2019Ens 2 Baines n\u2019a pas dit aux autres que son p\u00e8re \u00e9tait le vice-amiral Craig Baines, commandant de la MRC, mais la rumeur a fini par circuler. C\u2019est lorsqu&#8217;il a assist\u00e9 en novembre dernier \u00e0 sa promotion \u00e0 son grade actuel qu\u2019on a \u00ab\u00a0d\u00e9couvert le pot aux roses\u00a0\u00bb, a-t-elle d\u00e9clar\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Je dois dire que je m\u2019int\u00e9resse davantage aujourd\u2019hui \u00e0 ce qu\u2019il a \u00e0 me raconter sur son travail que lorsque j\u2019\u00e9tais enfant. Nous avons beaucoup de choses \u00e0 nous dire et j\u2019ai l\u2019impression d\u2019\u00eatre plus proche de lui maintenant. C&#8217;est vraiment bien.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019Ens 2 Baines caresse toujours le projet de faire des \u00e9tudes de m\u00e9decine, mais elle a dit qu\u2019elle envisageait la possibilit\u00e9 de se joindre aux FAC \u00e0 temps plein comme m\u00e9decin militaire.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Nous verrons bien ce qui se passera. Je sais que je souhaite rester dans la Marine. C\u2019est une exp\u00e9rience formidable et on rencontre des gens de diff\u00e9rents horizons et de toutes les r\u00e9gions du Canada. Je me suis fait des amis tr\u00e8s proches et je pourrais certainement en faire une carri\u00e8re.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00ab\u00a0Le travail forge leur personnalit\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb<\/b><\/p>\n<p>La PM 1 Peggy Bradford qui, au fil des ann\u00e9es, a eu l\u2019occasion d\u2019observer des centaines de jeunes r\u00e9servistes et de travailler avec eux, a affirm\u00e9 que les gens tissaient de solides amiti\u00e9s en travaillant ensemble.<\/p>\n<p>Nous constatons que si nous pouvons les garder pour plus de cinq ans, nous les avons pour la vie. Ce travail offre un vaste \u00e9ventail de possibilit\u00e9s et d\u2019exp\u00e9riences \u2026 pour ceux qui restent \u2026 le travail forge leur personnalit\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb, a-t-elle expliqu\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Premi\u00e8re ma\u00eetre du service de soutien de la R\u00e9serve navale, la PM 1 Bradford a occup\u00e9 le poste de capitaine d\u2019armes \u00e0 bord du NCSM <i>Scotian<\/i>, de mai 2018 \u00e0 juillet 2021, et a c\u00e9l\u00e9br\u00e9 ses 40 ans de service au sein de la R\u00e9serve navale l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 dernier.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 l\u2019approche du 75e\u00a0anniversaire du NCSM <i>Scotian, <\/i>le 23 avril 2022, la PM 1 Bradford se rappelle les \u00e9tapes importantes de sa carri\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0C\u2019est \u00e9norme!
