The return of a time of struggle and great power competition: when larger nations employed force to conquer their neighbours, redrawing borders in the hopes of regaining a past glory that was never truly theirs. This attack is an attack against the international rules based order, with changes to the geopolitical situation that will reverberate for years to come.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6360\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6360\" style=\"width: 318px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6360\" src=\"https:\/\/tridentnewspaper.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/19-0205-photo1-lgen-eyre.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"318\" height=\"398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tridentnewspaper.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/19-0205-photo1-lgen-eyre.jpeg 560w, https:\/\/tridentnewspaper.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/19-0205-photo1-lgen-eyre-240x300.jpeg 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6360\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gen Wayne Eyre<br \/>DND\/MDN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While the future is uncertain, the events in Ukraine have underscored the primacy of our core mission as a fighting force: the defence of Canada and Canadian interests.<\/p>\n<p>These events have also given me cause to reflect upon the paradox that lies at the heart of a professional military. We train our entire lives \u2013 spending blood, tears, toil, and sweat \u2013 to prepare ourselves to fight in defence of our homeland, against threats we dearly hope will never come. For our brothers and sisters in Ukraine, that fight is upon them now.<\/p>\n<p>For the close to 3,000 members of the Canadian Armed Forces who have served on Operation UNIFIER since 2015, this may be an especially difficult time. Your thoughts, like mine, will no doubt be with your friends and comrades as they face the ultimate test. This is only natural.<\/p>\n<p>Know that we, and our allies, have done everything our Governments have asked of us to help prepare Ukraine for these challenging times. No matter the outcome of this invasion, the training you provided, to more than 33,000 members of the Ukrainian Security Forces, will be invaluable in the days to come. You have helped save lives that would otherwise have been lost, and you have helped prepare the Ukrainian Forces to fight tyranny and unbridled aggression.<\/p>\n<p>As these events unfold, know that our work with our allies will become ever more important. Since 2014, almost 13,000 of us have supported NATO Assurance Measures throughout Central and Eastern Europe on Operation REASSURANCE, either through support to our initial Land Task Force in Poland; or our current enhanced Forward Presence in Latvia; through our near-persistent presence in Euro-Atlantic waters as part of NATO Standing Naval Forces; or through our support to NATO air policing efforts in Romania, Iceland, and Lithuania over the years.<\/p>\n<p>To those currently deployed to the region, and to all those who will, or may join them in the coming weeks and months, know that your work, which has contributed greatly to our Alliance\u2019s deterrence and defence efforts, is now more vital than ever.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of us will continue to be prepared to do what our government asks of us, in support of our country and our fellow Canadians.<\/p>\n<p>The world has just become a much more dangerous place, and we must do all that we can to stand as one and be ready.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Message du CEMD \u00e0 l\u2019\u00c9quipe de la D\u00e9fense au sujet de l\u2019invasion de l\u2019Ukraine<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Par Le G\u00e9n\u00e9ral Wayne Eyre,<\/strong><br \/>\nChef d\u2019\u00e9tat-major de la D\u00e9fense<\/p>\n<p>Pour beaucoup de Canadiens, l\u2019invasion non provoqu\u00e9e de l\u2019Ukraine par la Russie repr\u00e9sente le retour de l\u2019histoire. Le retour d\u2019une p\u00e9riode de lutte et de concurrence des grandes\u00a0<span class=\"nowrap\">puissances :<\/span>\u00a0une p\u00e9riode o\u00f9 les grandes nations utilisaient la force pour conqu\u00e9rir leurs voisins et redessiner les fronti\u00e8res, dans l\u2019espoir de retrouver une gloire pass\u00e9e qui ne leur avait jamais vraiment appartenu. Cette attaque est aussi une attaque contre l\u2019ordre international fond\u00e9 sur des r\u00e8gles, \u00a0avec des changements dans la situation g\u00e9opolitique qui se r\u00e9percuteront pendant des ann\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<p>Bien que l\u2019avenir soit incertain, les \u00e9v\u00e9nements en Ukraine font ressortir la primaut\u00e9 de notre mission en tant que force de\u00a0<span class=\"nowrap\">combat :<\/span>\u00a0la d\u00e9fense du Canada et de ses int\u00e9r\u00eats.<\/p>\n<p>Ces \u00e9v\u00e9nements m\u2019ont \u00e9galement amen\u00e9 \u00e0 r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir au paradoxe qui se trouve au c\u0153ur d\u2019une force militaire professionnelle. Nous nous entra\u00eenons toute notre vie \u2013 offrant sang, labeur, larmes et sueur \u2013 pour nous pr\u00e9parer \u00e0 combattre pour la d\u00e9fense de notre patrie, contre des menaces que nous esp\u00e9rons profond\u00e9ment ne jamais voir se manifester. Pour nos fr\u00e8res et nos s\u0153urs en Ukraine, ce combat est aujourd\u2019hui une r\u00e9alit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Pour pr\u00e8s de<span class=\"nowrap\">\u00a03 000\u00a0<\/span>membres des Forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes qui ont servi dans le cadre de l\u2019op\u00e9ration UNIFIER depuis 2015, cette p\u00e9riode peut \u00eatre particuli\u00e8rement difficile. Vous penserez certainement, tout comme moi, \u00e0 vos amis et camarades, alors qu\u2019ils affrontent l\u2019\u00e9preuve ultime. C\u2019est tout \u00e0 fait naturel.<\/p>\n<p>Sachez que nous, ainsi que nos alli\u00e9s, avons fait tout ce que nos gouvernements nous ont demand\u00e9 pour aider l\u2019Ukraine \u00e0 se pr\u00e9parer \u00e0 ces temps difficiles. Peu importe le r\u00e9sultat de cette invasion, l\u2019instruction que vous avez donn\u00e9e \u00e0 plus de\u00a0<span class=\"nowrap\">33 000\u00a0<\/span>membres des forces de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 de l\u2019Ukraine sera d\u2019une grande utilit\u00e9 dans les jours \u00e0 venir. Vous avez aid\u00e9 \u00e0 sauver des vies qui, autrement, seraient perdues, et \u00e0 pr\u00e9parer les forces ukrainiennes \u00e0 se battre contre la tyrannie et \u00e0 l\u2019agression effr\u00e9n\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Pendant que ces \u00e9v\u00e9nements se d\u00e9roulent, sachez que le travail que nous effectuons avec nos alli\u00e9s prendra de plus en plus d\u2019importance.
