As HMCS <\/span>Margaret Brooke<\/span><\/i>, Canada\u2019s second Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS), left Halifax on February 17, the crew was full of anticipation \u2014 not only were they heading off to do cold weather and ice trials, this marked the first time they would spend an extended period out at sea with their new ship.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bound first for Newfoundland before heading north to the Labrador Sea, HMCS <\/span>Margaret<\/span><\/i> Brooke<\/span><\/i> will move through the Davis Strait into Baffin Bay, looking for temperatures of 30-below celsius or colder and metre-thick ice to run through a series of trials mean to test the ship\u2019s capabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s expected to be about a four-week trip, although flexibility with the schedule is key, said Lt(N) Graham Austin, Navigating Officer onboard <\/span>Margaret Brooke<\/span><\/i>. \u201cYou can have a set schedule but because we need specific conditions we\u2019re looking for\u2026 we need to have maximum flexibility built in,\u201d he said<\/span><\/p>\n

Like others in the Harry DeWolf-class of vessels, <\/span>Margaret Brooke<\/span><\/i> is a very different ship from most in the Royal Canadian Navy, not only from an operational perspective, but also in terms of the quality of life for the crew, as their home-away-from-home for long periods of time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve sailed on frigates, MCDVs (Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels) and now on the AOPV (Arctic Offshore Patrol Vessels). I\u2019ve had lots of at-sea time, just a little over 1,300 days, so I can speak to the creature comforts of the AOPV platform,\u201d said PO1 Ron Kennedy, Naval Communications Officer and Operations Coordinator onboard <\/span>Margaret<\/span><\/i> Brooke<\/span><\/i>. \u201cThe AOPV\u2026 the best way to explain it is that it\u2019s like being on a cruise ship, as compared to a frigate or MCDV.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

High praise. So what is it about these ships that make them so different from the rest of the fleet?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s spacious,\u201d said Lt(N) Austin. \u201cThe ship is a patrol ship, not at all a combatant like the frigates. It\u2019s built to be able to navigate in ice so it needs to be of a sufficient size to be able to break the ice and sail in those kinds of conditions. Everything on board is just a little bit bigger and because we\u2019re a smaller crew, comparatively speaking, there\u2019s just a lot more room for everyone.\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

At present, <\/span>Margaret Brooke<\/span><\/i> has a crew of 68. By comparison, the Halifax-class frigates operate with a crew of 230-plus, and the MCDVs \u2014 a much smaller ship than the AOPV \u2014 has a crew of about 48.<\/span><\/p>\n

The new ships offer more space in the crew accommodations, more toilets or \u201cheads\u201d and wash spaces, an all-ranks cafeteria, better digital connectivity and a dedicated fitness space with gym equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ship\u2019s traditional messes are socialization areas only, and the main eating area is an all-ranks cafeteria, explained Lt(N) Jennifer Grant, Bridge Watchkeeper onboard <\/span>Margaret<\/span><\/i> Brooke<\/span><\/i>, and the ship\u2019s Information Management Officer (IMO).<\/span><\/p>\n

The cafeteria is well laid out, featuring a serving buffet and salad bar, and even a cappuccino machine. The addition of portholes adds natural light \u2014 a huge plus when spending a long time at sea.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s much more inclusive as everyone is together,\u201d said Lt(N) Grant.<\/span><\/p>\n

MS David Dion agreed, saying it adds a sense of camaraderie amongst the crew: \u201cEveryone can speak to everyone. It gives a totally different feel. To me, it makes us feel like more of a family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The addition of a dedicated workout space is another plus with the new ships. In <\/span>Margaret<\/span><\/i> Brooke<\/span><\/i>, space allows for up to eight members using the gym area at a time, and more in the hangar when there\u2019s no embarked helicopter on board.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve outfitted the gym space with extra equipment and turned the hangar into a crossfit area,\u201d said PO1 Kennedy, who also acts as the sports coordinator on board. \u201cHaving that space makes a huge difference to quality of life. For me, quality of life starts with fitness.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Advanced technology and the ability to use more automation are other improvements that bring big benefits as well, said Lt(N) Matthew Parnell, Assistant Naval Technical Officer with <\/span>Margaret<\/span><\/i> Brooke<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have personnel monitoring\u2026 and responding to do regular maintenance accordingly, but we\u2019re a smaller crew and having that automation frees us up a lot,\u201d he said. \u201cEverything on these ships is just a lot more comfortable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
