Port inspection divers train to maintain proficiency<\/b><\/p>\n

Port inspection divers from 15 Naval Reserve Divisions across Canada gathered on Vancouver Island from January 21 to 30, 2022, for an annual diving exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n

Forty-eight naval reservists travelled to dive sites in Comox, Nanaimo and Port Hardy, B.C., to take part in Dive 2270.<\/span><\/p>\n

The event was missed last year due to Covid-19; but this year, the group came together to perform tasks to help them maintain their dive proficiency and to meet regenerative training requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n

They made their way to remote locations off-shore via inflatable boats.<\/span><\/p>\n

Using Compressed Air Breathing Apparatus (CABA) and diving to depths of 30 metres, they performed underwater searches and surveys.<\/span><\/p>\n

Part of this year\u2019s mission was to qualify many of these divers with the new CABA Lite equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n

It also involved familiarizing the divers with the Navy\u2019s new Shark Marine Sonar equipment that enables them to more easily detect underwater objects.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThings went very well and there certainly was a degree of satisfaction for me and the other organizers because we were able to mitigate a lot of obstacles to make this exercise a success,\u201d said Petty Officer 1st Class (PO1) Jacek Jaskiewicz, Regional Dive Centre West Chief from Winnipeg\u2019s Naval Reserve Division, Her Majesty\u2019s Canadian Ship <\/span>Chippawa,<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

He noted that several days of heavy fog hampered the team\u2019s effectiveness at reaching previously selected dive sites further offshore. Instead, alternate dive sites closer to shore were used. Poor visibility also led to the cancellation of a helicopter exercise involving an air crew from Canadian Forces Base Comox.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before the exercise, naval reservists isolated for two days and underwent rapid Covid-19 testing. Rigorous cleaning and sanitizing of equipment was also required to keep the participants safe.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a big team effort required to make this 10-day exercise a success,\u201d says PO1 Jaskiewicz. \u201cIn the end, we stayed safe, played by the rules and still managed to achieve our objectives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Des plongeurs d\u2019inspection portuaire provenant de 15 divisions de la R\u00e9serve navale au Canada se sont regroup\u00e9s sur l\u2019\u00eele de Vancouver, du 21 au<\/span><\/p>\n

30 janvier 2022, pour participer \u00e0 un exercice annuel de plong\u00e9e.<\/span><\/p>\n

En tout, 48 r\u00e9servistes de la Marine se sont rendus sur des sites de plong\u00e9e se trouvant \u00e0 Comox, \u00e0 Nanaimo et \u00e0 Port Hardy, en Colombie-Britannique, pour prendre part \u00e0 l\u2019exercice Dive 2270.<\/span><\/p>\n

L\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nement n\u2019a pas eu lieu l\u2019an dernier en raison de la COVID-19, mais cette ann\u00e9e, le groupe s\u2019est rassembl\u00e9 pour effectuer les t\u00e2ches de sorte de maintenir leurs comp\u00e9tences en plong\u00e9e et de r\u00e9pondre aux exigences d\u2019instruction de r\u00e9cup\u00e9ration.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ils se sont rendus dans des endroits \u00e9loign\u00e9s au large des c\u00f4tes au moyen de canots pneumatiques.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c0 l\u2019aide d\u2019un appareil respiratoire \u00e0 air comprim\u00e9 (ARAC) et en plongeant \u00e0 des profondeurs de 30 m\u00e8tres, ils ont effectu\u00e9 des recherches sous-marines et des inspections de car\u00e8nes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Une partie de la mission de cette ann\u00e9e avait pour but de permettre \u00e0 un grand nombre de ces plongeurs d\u2019acqu\u00e9rir les comp\u00e9tences pour utiliser le nouvel \u00e9quipement ARAC l\u00e9ger.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elle consistait \u00e9galement \u00e0 faire conna\u00eetre aux plongeurs le nouvel \u00e9quipement sonar Shark Marine de la Marine qui leur permet de d\u00e9tecter plus facilement les objets sous-marins.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Tous s\u2019est bien pass\u00e9 et nous avons certainement \u00e9prouv\u00e9 une certaine satisfaction, moi et les autres organisateurs, parce que nous avons r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 surmonter de nombreux obstacles pour faire de cet exercice un succ\u00e8s \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le ma\u00eetre de 1re classe (M 1) Jacek Jaskiewicz, chef du Centre r\u00e9gional de plong\u00e9e (Ouest) de la division de la R\u00e9serve navale de Winnipeg, le navire canadien de Sa Majest\u00e9 (NCSM) Chippawa.<\/span><\/p>\n

Il mentionne que plusieurs jours de brouillards ont emp\u00each\u00e9 l\u2019\u00e9quipe d\u2019atteindre les sites de plong\u00e9e pr\u00e9alablement choisis, plus au large. Ils ont donc d\u00fb opter pour des sites de plong\u00e9e plus proches de la c\u00f4te. La mauvaise visibilit\u00e9 a \u00e9galement men\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019annulation d\u2019un exercice d\u2019h\u00e9licopt\u00e8res auquel devait participer l\u2019\u00e9quipage a\u00e9rien de la base des Forces canadiennes Comox.<\/span><\/p>\n

Avant de mener les exercices, les r\u00e9servistes de la Marine se sont isol\u00e9s pendant deux jours et ont subi un test de d\u00e9pistage rapide de la COVID-19. Il a \u00e9galement fallu nettoyer et d\u00e9sinfecter rigoureusement l\u2019\u00e9quipement pour assurer la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des participants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
