A group of Naval Reservists hailing from cities across Canada played a vital role during Her Majesty\u2019s Canadian Ship (HMCS) <\/span>Harry DeWolf\u2019s<\/span><\/i> recent drug seizures as part of Operation Caribbe, Canada’s participation in U.S.-led enhanced counter-narcotics operations in the Caribbean Sea and Eastern Pacific. Reservists make up about a fifth of the 65-member ship\u2019s company.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For Sailor 1st Class (S1) James Forneri, from the Naval Reserve Division HMCS <\/span>Griffon<\/span><\/i> in Thunder Bay, Ont., the deployment on Op Caribbe allowed him to work alongside a partner nation for the first time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat team is super professional, it was amazing working alongside them,\u201d S1 Forneri said, referencing the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Law Enforcement Detachment embarked in <\/span>Harry DeWolf<\/span><\/i> for Op Caribbe. The Law Enforcement Detachment performed the boarding, searching and evidence collecting tasks during drug seizure operations, while Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) sailors drove the ship\u2019s multi-role rescue boats, operated the boats\u2019 C6 guns and supported the USCG team logistically.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the lead ship of the new <\/span>Harry DeWolf<\/span><\/i> class of Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships, the ship and its crew returned to its home port of Halifax on December 16, 2021 after completing an historic circumnavigation of North America. The ship departed Halifax on August 3, sailing north to take part in Operation Nanook, Canada\u2019s premiere Arctic operation. While in the Arctic, the ship and its crew charted its course via the fabled Northwest Passage, a first for the RCN since 1954.<\/span><\/p>\n

Upon completion of Nanook, the ship sailed on to Canada\u2019s West Coast, then down the western seaboard of North America and into the Caribbean Sea and Eastern Pacific, where it took part in Caribbe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was during Caribbe that the ship made its first two drug busts \u2013 milestones for both <\/span>Harry DeWolf<\/span><\/i> and the class. The Naval Reservists on board played vital roles in what happened during those two drug seizures.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the days leading up to the November 18 seizure, Sailor 1st Class (S1) Alexander Shelton, a naval combat information operator whose home unit is HMCS <\/span>Brunswicker<\/span><\/i> in Saint John, N.B., was part of the team that tracked the suspect vessel, interpreting intelligence to help create a plan of approach.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the early hours of the morning of the interdiction, boatswains Sailor 2nd Class (S2) Mohamed Kaseem, from HMCS <\/span>Prevost<\/span><\/i> in London, Ont., S1 Jeremy Th\u00e9berge, from HMCS <\/span>Jolliet<\/span><\/i> in Sept-\u00celes, Que., and S1 Jacob Fleck-Giesbrecht, from HMCS <\/span>Nonsuch<\/span><\/i> in Edmonton, ensured the ship\u2019s two multi-role rescue boats were fueled and ready to deploy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Boatswains and boat drivers S1 Andrew Henderson, from <\/span>Nonsuch<\/span><\/i>, and S1 Samuel Gagn\u00e9, from HMCS <\/span>Scotian<\/span><\/i> in <\/span>Halifax<\/span><\/i>, were in the boarding party ready room alongside members of the USCG Law Enforcement Detachment, preparing to chase down the suspect vessel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

S1 Luc Gillis, a naval communicator from HMCS <\/span>Griffon<\/span><\/i>, and S1 Forneri drove the boats and manned their C6 gun mounts, providing command presence during the boarding procedure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The approach was directed by naval warfare officers like Lieutenants (Navy) Scott Patchett, from <\/span>Prevost<\/span><\/i>, and Joe Cheng, from HMCS <\/span>Discovery<\/span><\/i> in Vancouver. They are responsible for safely guiding <\/span>Harry DeWolf<\/span><\/i> closer to its target.<\/span><\/p>\n

The final parts of the team which intercepted the vessel were made up of members always standing by to assist. Logistics officer Lieutenant Commander Craig Lemoine, from Winnipeg\u2019s HMCS <\/span>Chippawa,<\/span><\/i>, kept the members supplied, and cook S1 Veronique Bouchard, a police officer whose home reserve unit is Montreal\u2019s HMCS <\/span>Donnacona<\/span><\/i>, ensured the crew was fueled from dawn to dusk in the galley. He also prepared the hangar to receive possible detainees or rescuees from the U.S. Coast Guard team.<\/span><\/p>\n

For many of the reservists on board, their participation in the deployment illustrates the beauty of the reserve life \u2013 the balance between a civilian career and military experiences creates endless opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI really enjoy travelling and having the opportunity to contribute to Operation Caribbe has been an incredible experience for me,\u201d said S1 Shelton.<\/span><\/p>\n

For S1 Bouchard, this deployment was the experience of a lifetime \u2013 taking part in <\/span>Harry DeWolf\u2019s<\/span><\/i> historic maiden voyage.<\/span><\/p>\n

S1 Gillis and S1 Forneri joined for the challenge of operating the first vessel in the RCN\u2019s new fleet of Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an incredible experience for any reservist, and anyone interested should definitely put their name forward,\u201d said S1 Gillis. \u201cI\u2019m now returning to my home unit, another small, tight-knit family, and can\u2019t wait to share my experiences with them,\u201d he said of Naval Reserve Division HMCS <\/span>Griffon<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether it was a first deployment, or another to add to the memory book, reservists aboard <\/span>Harry DeWolf<\/span><\/i> for its historic first voyage helped the ship circumnavigate North America by way of the Northwest Passage and Panama Canal, saw polar bears and icebergs while interacting with Canada\u2019s Inuit communities, interdicted two vessels of interest resulting in the seizure of 2,589 kg of cocaine on Operation Caribbe, and enhanced professional skills as sailors in their trades.<\/span><\/p>\n

Premier navire de la nouvelle classe HARRY DEWOLF de navires de patrouille extrac\u00f4tiers et de l\u2019Arctique, le NCSM <\/span>Harry DeWolf<\/span><\/i> est retourn\u00e9 \u00e0 son port d\u2019attache d\u2019Halifax avec son \u00e9quipage, le 16\u00a0d\u00e9cembre\u00a02021, apr\u00e8s avoir effectu\u00e9 une tourn\u00e9e historique de l\u2019Am\u00e9rique du Nord. Le navire a quitt\u00e9 Halifax le 3 ao\u00fbt en direction du nord pour prendre part \u00e0 l\u2019op\u00e9ration\u00a0Nanook, la principale op\u00e9ration du Canada dans l\u2019Arctique. Pendant qu\u2019il se trouvait dans l\u2019Arctique, il a travers\u00e9 le l\u00e9gendaire passage du Nord-Ouest, une premi\u00e8re pour la MRC depuis 1954.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s sa participation \u00e0 l\u2019op\u00e9ration Nanook, le navire s\u2019est dirig\u00e9 vers la c\u00f4te Ouest du Canada, puis a navigu\u00e9 le long de la c\u00f4te Ouest de l\u2019Am\u00e9rique du Nord avant d\u2019entrer dans la mer des Cara\u00efbes et le Pacifique Est, o\u00f9 il a pris part \u00e0 l\u2019op\u00e9ration Caribbe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

C\u2019\u00e9tait au cours de l\u2019op\u00e9ration Caribbe que le navire a effectu\u00e9 ses deux saisies de drogue qui constituent des \u00e9tapes importantes pour le navire <\/span>Harry DeWolf<\/span><\/i> et la classe. Les r\u00e9servistes de la Marine qui se trouvaient \u00e0 bord ont jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le essentiel dans l\u2019ex\u00e9cution de ces deux saisies de drogue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dans les jours qui ont pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 la saisie du 18 novembre, le Mat 1 Alexander Shelton, op\u00e9rateur d\u2019\u00e9quipement d\u2019informations de combat (Marine) dont l\u2019unit\u00e9 d\u2019appartenance est le NCSM\u00a0<\/span>Brunswicker<\/span><\/i> de Saint John, au Nouveau-Brunswick, faisait partie de l\u2019\u00e9quipe qui a suivi le navire suspect et qui a interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 les donn\u00e9es de renseignement servant \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tablissement d\u2019un plan d\u2019approche.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Aux premi\u00e8res heures du matin de l\u2019interdiction, trois man\u0153uvriers, le matelot de 2<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0classe (mat\u00a02) Mohamed Kaseem, du NCSM\u00a0<\/span>Prevost<\/span><\/i> de London, en Ontario, le\u00a0Mat\u00a01\u00a0Jeremy Th\u00e9berge, du NCSM\u00a0<\/span>Jolliet<\/span><\/i> de Sept-\u00celes, au Qu\u00e9bec, et le\u00a0Mat\u00a01\u00a0Jacob Fleck-Giesbrecht, du NCSM\u00a0<\/span>Nonsuch<\/span><\/i> d\u2019Edmonton, se sont assur\u00e9s que les deux embarcations de sauvetage polyvalentes du navire \u00e9taient pleines de carburant et pr\u00eates \u00e0 \u00eatre utilis\u00e9es.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pour bon nombre des r\u00e9servistes \u00e0 bord, le fait de participer \u00e0 ce d\u00e9ploiement illustre la beaut\u00e9 de la vie de r\u00e9serviste : l\u2019\u00e9quilibre entre une carri\u00e8re civile et les exp\u00e9riences militaires offre des possibilit\u00e9s infinies.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0J\u2019aime beaucoup voyager, et l\u2019occasion qui m\u2019a \u00e9t\u00e9 donn\u00e9e de contribuer \u00e0 l\u2019op\u00e9ration\u00a0Caribbe a \u00e9t\u00e9 pour moi une exp\u00e9rience incroyable\u00a0\u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Mat 1 Shelton.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pour le Mat 1 Bouchard, ce d\u00e9ploiement a \u00e9t\u00e9 la plus belle exp\u00e9rience de sa vie : il a pris part au voyage inaugural historique du <\/span>Harry DeWolf<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Les Mat 1 Gillis et Forneri ont voulu relever le d\u00e9fi de travailler \u00e0 bord du tout premier navire de la nouvelle flotte de navires de patrouille extrac\u00f4tiers et de l\u2019Arctique de la MRC.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Il s\u2019agit d\u2019une exp\u00e9rience incroyable pour tout r\u00e9serviste, et toute personne int\u00e9ress\u00e9e doit absolument se manifester, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Mat 1 Gillis, de la Division de la R\u00e9serve navale, le NCSM <\/span>Griffon<\/span><\/i>. Je retourne maintenant \u00e0 mon unit\u00e9 d\u2019appartenance, une autre petite famille tr\u00e8s unie, et j\u2019ai h\u00e2te de raconter mes exp\u00e9riences \u00e0 mes camarades de bord.\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n
