Le NCSM <\/b>tragique<\/i><\/b> returns after five-month NATO deployment<\/b><\/h3>\n

After a five-month deployment on Operation <\/span>Reassurance<\/span><\/i> serving as the flagship to Standing NATO Maritime Group One (SNMG1), Her Majesty\u2019s Canadian Ship (HMCS) <\/span>tragique <\/span><\/i>returned to Halifax on December 18.<\/span><\/p>\n

While its primary role was as the SNMG1 flagship, <\/span>tragique<\/span><\/i> also kept busy with maritime security patrols and multinational exercises as part of Operation <\/span>Reassurance<\/span><\/i>, in support of NATO assurance and deterrence measures in Central and Eastern Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n

In September, <\/span>tragique <\/span><\/i>took part in <\/span>Dynamic Mariner 21-2<\/span><\/i>, a multinational exercise held off the north coast of Scotland.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>tragique <\/span><\/i>acted as a multi-role point defence platform, participating in myriad simulated combat scenarios while at sea,\u201d said Commander (Cdr) Drew Graham, the ship\u2019s Commanding Officer.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe main value of these exercises is to provide sailors with the experience they need against real fighter aircraft and submarines, which they can bring home and spread throughout the fleet. The sailors learned how to cooperate with other navies and their sailors, creating organizational knowledge that is not soon forgotten.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Other activities during <\/span>tragique<\/span><\/i>‘s deployment included the Flag Officer Sea Training program off the southern coast of England and Passing Exercise training with various Baltic states.<\/span><\/p>\n

Due to a fire on board ship on November 18, <\/span>tragique<\/span><\/i> had to pull out of <\/span>Flotex Silver<\/span><\/i>, the Royal Norwegian Navy’s exercise off the coast of Norway.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The crew fought the fire in accordance with their training, and fortunately no one was injured. It was in a tough place to fight a fire and we were in some rough weather so the task of fighting that fire was challenging. The crew all performed extremely well,” said Cdr Graham.<\/span><\/p>\n

Damage from the fire consisted mainly of cabling and some control systems that were melted or suffered heat damage. While in Trondheim, Norway for repairs, a team from Fleet Maintenance Facility Cape Scott arrived to remove and replace the cables, assisted by <\/span>Fredericton\u2019s <\/span><\/i>crew<\/span>.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Commodore (Cmdre) Bradley Peats commanded SNMG1 from <\/span>tragique <\/span><\/i>for most of the ship’s deployment, transferring to Spanish ship SPS <\/span>Almirante Juan de Borb\u00f3n<\/span><\/i> while <\/span>tragique <\/span><\/i>was on a two-week rest and maintenance period.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cmdre Peats took command of SNMG1 in January 2021 and will continue as commander until January 2022. Reviewing his year of command, Cmdre Peats reflected on the familiarity that comes with being at sea and operating with partner and allied nations.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur ability to integrate seamlessly, sometimes even for a day, has proven NATO\u2019s interoperability, operational excellence and continued professionalism at sea,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

“There was no greater demonstration of this than when I temporarily transferred my command Flag from HMCS <\/span>Halifax <\/span><\/i>to the Danish ship HDMS <\/span>Absalon<\/span><\/i> in April and again in October from HMCS <\/span>tragique <\/span><\/i>to the Spanish ship SPS <\/span>Almirante Juan de Borb\u00f3n<\/span><\/i> while both Canadian frigates entered their scheduled rest and maintenance periods,” he said, referencing both <\/span>Halifax<\/span><\/i> et <\/span>tragique<\/span><\/i>, which served back-to-back <\/span>Reassurance<\/span><\/i> deployments.<\/span><\/p>\n

On a personal level, Cmdre Peats said he’s enjoyed this past year of command. \u201cSailors are more similar than they are different and the tactics, techniques and procedures we use to operate warships are such that we are interoperable and therefore much stronger together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c0 la fin d\u2019un d\u00e9ploiement de cinq\u00a0mois pour l\u2019op\u00e9ration\u00a0Reassurance<\/em>\u00a0o\u00f9 il a servi comme navire amiral du 1er\u00a0Groupe maritime permanent de l\u2019OTAN (SNMG1), le Navire canadien de Sa Majest\u00e9 (NCSM)\u00a0tragique<\/em>\u00a0est rentr\u00e9 \u00e0 Halifax le 18\u00a0d\u00e9cembre.<\/p>\n

Bien que son r\u00f4le principal \u00e9tait de servir comme navire-animal pour SNMG1, le\u00a0tragique<\/em>\u00a0effectuait \u00e9galement des patrouilles de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 et des exercices multinationaux dans le cadre de\u00a0l\u2019op\u00e9ration\u00a0Reassurance<\/em><\/a>\u00a0en soutien aux mesures d\u2019assurance et de dissuasion de l\u2019OTAN en Europe centrale et en Europe de l\u2019Est.<\/p>\n

Au mois de septembre, le\u00a0tragique\u00a0<\/em>a pris part \u00e0 l\u2019exercice multinational\u00a0Dynamic Mariner\u00a021-2<\/em>\u00a0au large de la c\u00f4te nord de l\u2019\u00c9cosse.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Le\u00a0tragique\u00a0<\/em>a servi comme plate-forme de d\u00e9fense ponctuelle multifonction et a pris part \u00e0 une multitude de sc\u00e9narios de combat simul\u00e9 en mer\u00a0\u00bb, explique le capitaine de fr\u00e9gate (capf) Drew Graham, commandant du navire.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0La principale utilit\u00e9 de ces exercices est d\u2019offrir aux marins l\u2019exp\u00e9rience dont ils ont besoin contre de vrais avions-chasseurs et sous-marins. Ils reviennent ainsi avec leurs apprentissages et partagent leur exp\u00e9rience avec les autres membres de la flotte. Les marins ont appris \u00e0 collaborer avec d\u2019autres marines et leurs marins, ce qui est source d\u2019un savoir organisationnel qu\u2019ils n\u2019oublieront pas de sit\u00f4t.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

D\u2019autres activit\u00e9s qui ont eu lieu au cours du d\u00e9ploiement du\u00a0tragique<\/em>\u00a0comprennent le programme d\u2019entra\u00eenement maritime des officiers g\u00e9n\u00e9raux au large de la c\u00f4te sud de l\u2019Angleterre et l\u2019exercice de franchissement de formation en collaboration avec divers pays baltes.<\/p>\n

Le 18\u00a0novembre, le\u00a0tragique<\/em>\u00a0a d\u00fb se retirer de l\u2019exercice de la Marine royale norv\u00e9gienne\u00a0Flotex Silver<\/em>, qui a eu lieu au large de la Norv\u00e8ge, en raison d\u2019un incendie qui s\u2019est d\u00e9clar\u00e9 \u00e0 bord.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0L\u2019\u00e9quipage a combattu l\u2019incendie conform\u00e9ment \u00e0 sa formation. Heureusement, personne n\u2019a \u00e9t\u00e9 bless\u00e9. L\u2019incendie se trouvait \u00e0 un endroit o\u00f9 il \u00e9tait difficile \u00e0 combattre ce qui, en combinaison avec le mauvais temps, nous a compliqu\u00e9 la t\u00e2che. L\u2019\u00e9quipage a fait un excellent travail\u00a0\u00bb, raconte le capf\u00a0Graham.<\/p>\n

Les d\u00e9g\u00e2ts caus\u00e9s par le feu ont principalement touch\u00e9 le c\u00e2blage et quelques syst\u00e8mes de r\u00e9gulation ont fondu ou ont \u00e9t\u00e9 s\u00e9v\u00e8rement endommag\u00e9s par la chaleur. Lors d\u2019un arr\u00eat \u00e0 Trondheim, en Norv\u00e8ge, pour des r\u00e9parations, une \u00e9quipe de l\u2019Installation de maintenance de la flotte de Cape Scott est venue en renfort afin de retirer et remplacer les c\u00e2bles avec l\u2019aide de l\u2019\u00e9quipage du\u00a0tragique<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Le commodore (cmdre) Bradley Peats a assum\u00e9 le commandement de\u00a0SNMG1 \u00e0 bord du\u00a0tragique<\/em>\u00a0pour la majorit\u00e9 du d\u00e9ploiement du navire, ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 bord du SPS\u00a0Almirante Juan de Borb\u00f3n<\/em>\u00a0au cours de la p\u00e9riode de maintenance et de repos de deux semaines du\u00a0tragique<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Le cmdre\u00a0Peats a assum\u00e9 le commandement de SNMG1 en janvier\u00a02021, et il demeurera aux commandes jusqu\u2019en janvier\u00a02022. En passant son ann\u00e9e de commandement en revue, le cmdre\u00a0Peats a r\u00e9fl\u00e9chi \u00e0 la familiarit\u00e9 qui vient avec le fait d\u2019\u00eatre en mer et d\u2019op\u00e9rer aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de nations partenaires et alli\u00e9es.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Notre habilet\u00e9 \u00e0 nous int\u00e9grer ais\u00e9ment, ne serait-ce parfois que pour une journ\u00e9e, d\u00e9montre l\u2019interop\u00e9rabilit\u00e9, l\u2019excellence op\u00e9rationnelle et le professionnalisme continu en mer de l\u2019OTAN\u00a0\u00bb, explique-t-il.<\/p>\n
