A view into the past<\/b>: <\/b>Corvette porthole donated to Naval Museum of Halifax<\/b><\/h3>\n

A porthole from the wreck of HMCS <\/span>Trentonian<\/span><\/i>, the last corvette lost in the Battle of the Atlantic, was presented to the Naval Museum of Halifax on December 8.<\/span><\/p>\n

Author and naval historian Roger Litwiller made the donation of the porthole, which is one of two that were recovered from the wreck recently by a dive team from the United Kingdom. A small gathering to mark the significance of the donation included Jennifer Denty, museum director, Kyle Houghton, a university student who is cataloging the museum\u2019s artwork, Rear-Admiral Brian Santarpia, Commander Maritime Forces Atlantic (MARLANT) and Joint Task Force Atlantic (JTFA), and CPO1 Tom Lizotte, Formation Chief of MARLANT.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to be able to add this to the collection and humbled to be thought of as the proper caretaker for the artifact,\u201d said Denty.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking to the small group assembled around a temporary display table on the second floor of the museum, along with a framed print of <\/span>Trentonian<\/span><\/i> and a photograph of the ship\u2019s company, Litwiller recounted the chronology of how the portholes came into his possession.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The story began with an email he received in May 2021. One of the members of the dive team that took the portholes from the wreck had done some research online and found Litwiller\u2019s website on Canadian naval history; Litwiller has also written a book about HMCS <\/span>Trentonian<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>White Ensign Flying<\/span><\/i>, published by Dundurn Press in 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI got this email from the fellow saying \u2018I\u2019m a diver here in the UK. We did a dive on <\/span>Trentonian<\/span><\/i> in the spring and, despite my warnings to the crew, two of our club members\u2026 came up with portholes from the wreck\u2019. He managed to talk them into handing them over,\u201d Litwiller said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gesturing to the bent and broken porthole, Litwiller said the diver told Litwiller he had two of the ship\u2019s portholes \u2014 one that \u201c<\/span>was kind of busted up\u201d and another in \u201cexcellent\u201d condition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After further questioning, Litwiller said he determined that the damaged one came from the <\/span>\u201cstarboard aft\u201d \u2014 the area of <\/span>Trentonian<\/span><\/i> that had been torpedoed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe damage to this one was from the torpedo, from the explosion\u2026 the force to wrench it like this was phenomenal,\u201d he said. \u201cThat tells a whole story all on it\u2019s own.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The story of HMCS <\/b>Trentonian<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Following the ship\u2019s commissioning in Kingston, ON, on December 1, 1943, HMCS <\/span>Trentonian<\/span><\/i> was fitted out in Nova Scotia, and went through work-ups before being assigned to Western Approaches Command in March 1944 to escort convoys across the North Atlantic to the west of Ireland and Great Britain.<\/span><\/p>\n

On February 22, 1945, while escorting a convoy across the English Channel, <\/span>Trentonian<\/span><\/i> was torpedoed near Falmouth, killing six sailors and wounding 14 more. The torpedo struck the back right side of the ship, near where the life rafts were stored, said Litwiller.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the men killed was John McCormack, a 19-year-old stoker from Belleville, ON, who had transferred to the ship just a few weeks before the torpedo hit. Formerly a sea cadet, McCormack was at Kingston when <\/span>Trentonian<\/span><\/i> was commissioned and was thought to be the youngest sailor on the ship.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe had just done the Christmas exchange with the CO (Commanding Officer). His was one of the stories that haunted me when I was writing the book. Every one of the survivors I interviewed talked about John McCormack and how he was just a kid.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

McCormack wasn\u2019t actually the youngest on board the ship, however, as Litwiller discovered when doing interviews for his book. \u201cBill Shields was the youngest. He had lied about his age to join the Navy, so that Christmas when John McCormack was given the honour of youngest sailor, Bill was really the youngest, but couldn’t say anything.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

William Shields died at age 93 in Oakville, ON on June 6, 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n

Protecting historical shipwrecks<\/b><\/p>\n

The waters off the coast of Britain and Ireland are home to thousands of shipwrecks and considered war graves for the sailors who went down with the ships. While the UK has enacted laws to protect wrecks of historical significance \u2014 specifying that artifacts must not be disturbed or removed \u2014 Canada has yet to enact similar protections.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPilfering and looting of our wrecks is carrying on all the time. An artifact like this has such huge historic significance\u2026 I\u2019m just glad they contacted me. My biggest fear with artifacts like this is that they end up as a lawn ornament in somebody\u2019s garden or sitting in a scrap heap to be melted down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Litwiller is donating the second porthole to the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston, which recently moved back to the Kingston Dry dock property, a National Historic Site and former location of the Kingston Shipyards Co, where HMCS <\/span>Trentonian<\/span><\/i> was built.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0J\u2019ai re\u00e7u un courriel de cet homme qui m\u2019a dit\u00a0: \u2018Je suis plongeur ici au Royaume-Uni. En montrant le hublot tordu et cass\u00e9, M.\u00a0Litwiller a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que le plongeur lui avait dit qu\u2019il avait deux\u00a0hublots du navire \u2014 un qui \u00e9tait \u00ab\u00a0en quelque sorte ab\u00eem\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb et un autre en \u00ab\u00a0excellent\u00a0\u00bb \u00e9tat.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s d\u2019autres questions, M.\u00a0Litwiller a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 qu\u2019il avait d\u00e9termin\u00e9 que le hublot endommag\u00e9 provenait de l\u2019\u00ab\u00a0arri\u00e8re tribord\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<\/span>\u2014<\/span> la zone du <\/span>Trentonian<\/span><\/i> qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 torpill\u00e9e.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Les dommages subis par celui-ci proviennent de la torpille, de l\u2019explosion… la force qui l\u2019a arrach\u00e9 comme cela \u00e9tait ph\u00e9nom\u00e9nale, a-t-il dit. Cela raconte toute une histoire \u00e0 lui seul.\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

L\u2019histoire du NCSM\u00a0<\/b>Trentonian<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s la mise en service du navire \u00e0 Kingston en Ontario le 1<\/span>er<\/span>\u00a0d\u00e9cembre 1943, le NCSM\u00a0<\/span>Trentonian<\/span><\/i> a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9quip\u00e9 en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse et a fait sa croisi\u00e8re d\u2019endurance avant d\u2019\u00eatre affect\u00e9 au Commandement des approches occidentales en mars 1944 pour escorter des convois qui traversaient l\u2019Atlantique Nord jusqu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019ouest de l\u2019Irlande et de la Grande-Bretagne.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le 22\u00a0f\u00e9vrier 1945, alors qu\u2019il escortait un convoi dans la Manche, le <\/span>Trentonian<\/span><\/i> a \u00e9t\u00e9 torpill\u00e9 pr\u00e8s de Falmouth, ce qui a tu\u00e9 six\u00a0marins et a bless\u00e9 14\u00a0autres. La torpille a frapp\u00e9 le c\u00f4t\u00e9 arri\u00e8re droit du navire, pr\u00e8s de l\u2019endroit o\u00f9 \u00e9taient entrepos\u00e9s les radeaux de sauvetage, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 M.\u00a0Litwiller.<\/span><\/p>\n

L\u2019un des hommes tu\u00e9s \u00e9tait John McCormack, un chauffeur de 19\u00a0ans originaire de Belleville, en Ontario, qui avait \u00e9t\u00e9 transf\u00e9r\u00e9 sur le navire quelques semaines seulement avant que la torpille ne frappe. Ancien cadet de la Marine, M.\u00a0McCormack \u00e9tait \u00e0 Kingston lorsque le <\/span>Trentonian<\/span><\/i> a \u00e9t\u00e9 mis en service et on pensait qu\u2019il \u00e9tait le plus jeune marin du navire.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Il venait de faire l\u2019\u00e9change de No\u00ebl avec le cmdt\u00a0(commandant). Son histoire est l\u2019une de celles qui m\u2019ont hant\u00e9 lorsque j\u2019ai \u00e9crit le livre. Tous les survivants que j\u2019ai pass\u00e9s en entrevue ont parl\u00e9 de John McCormack et du fait qu\u2019il n\u2019\u00e9tait qu\u2019un enfant.\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

John McCormack n\u2019\u00e9tait cependant pas le plus jeune \u00e0 bord du navire, comme M.\u00a0Litwiller l\u2019a d\u00e9couvert en r\u00e9alisant des entrevues pour son livre. \u00ab\u00a0Bill Shields \u00e9tait le plus jeune. Il avait menti sur son \u00e2ge pour s\u2019enr\u00f4ler dans la Marine, si bien que ce No\u00ebl, lorsque John McCormack a re\u00e7u l\u2019honneur d\u2019\u00eatre le plus jeune marin, Bill \u00e9tait en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 le plus jeune, mais ne pouvait rien dire.\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Prot\u00e9ger les \u00e9paves historiques<\/b><\/p>\n

Les eaux au large des c\u00f4tes britanniques et irlandaises abritent des milliers d\u2019\u00e9paves et sont consid\u00e9r\u00e9es comme des s\u00e9pultures de guerre pour les marins qui ont sombr\u00e9 avec les navires. Le Royaume-Uni a adopt\u00e9 des lois pour prot\u00e9ger les \u00e9paves d\u2019importance historique\u00a0\u2014 en pr\u00e9cisant que les art\u00e9facts ne doivent pas \u00eatre d\u00e9rang\u00e9s ou enlev\u00e9s\u00a0\u2014 le Canada n\u2019a pas encore adopt\u00e9 de protections similaires.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Le chapardage et le pillage de nos \u00e9paves se poursuivent sans cesse. Un art\u00e9fact comme celui-ci a une telle importance historique \u00e9norme… Je suis simplement heureux qu\u2019ils aient communiqu\u00e9 avec moi. Ma plus grande crainte avec des art\u00e9facts comme celui-ci est qu\u2019ils finissent comme d\u00e9corations dans le jardin de quelqu\u2019un ou qu\u2019ils se retrouvent dans un tas de ferraille pour \u00eatre fondus.\u00a0\u00bb<\/span>M.\u00a0Litwiller fait don du deuxi\u00e8me hublot au Mus\u00e9e maritime des Grands Lacs \u00e0 Kingston, qui a r\u00e9cemment de nouveau emm\u00e9nag\u00e9 sur la propri\u00e9t\u00e9 de la cale s\u00e8che de Kingston, un lieu historique national et l\u2019ancien emplacement de la Kingston Shipyards Co, o\u00f9 le NCSM\u00a0<\/span>Trentonian<\/span><\/i> a \u00e9t\u00e9 construit.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
