Now that Her Majesty\u2019s Canadian Ship (HMCS) <\/span>Harry DeWolf<\/span><\/i> finished its historic circumnavigation of North America on December 16, 2021, one member of the crew is heading home with a duffle bag full of memories and one-of-a-kind experiences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

United States Navy sailor Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG) Kyle Luchau joined the ship in mid-August, although his journey began many months earlier when he applied for the inter-navy exchange \u201con a whim.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI heard about the chance to travel through the Arctic, and without hesitation I put my name forward,\u201d said LTJG Luchau, noting that he didn\u2019t have high hopes of being selected. \u201cThen one day I was requested in my Executive Officer\u2019s cabin where I saw he was on the phone. He asked me one question: Do you have a valid passport?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Soon after, LTJG Luchau was on his way to Ottawa for a quarantine period, then travelled to Iqaluit, Nunavut, to meet the ship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to strengthening working relationships between the Royal Canadian Navy and the United States Navy, sailors like LTJG Luchau who are selected for the exchange program become familiar with the other nation\u2019s operating systems and standard operating procedures.<\/span><\/p>\n

During his time on board, LTJG Luchau worked hard to master the systems of the <\/span>Harry DeWolf<\/span><\/i>-class Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship, and participated in both Operations <\/span>Nanook<\/span><\/i><\/a> (the Canadian Armed Forces\u2019 signature northern exercise) and <\/span>Caribbe<\/span><\/i><\/a> (Canada’s participation in U.S.-led counter-narcotics operations in the eastern Pacific Ocean) as part of the ship\u2019s company.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

LTJG Luchau took up duties expected of a naval warfare officer: standing watches, attending briefs and lectures, studying, and aiding the Defence Research and Development Canada\u2019s scientists launch a new towed-array system. As an extra effort, LTJG Luchau also led the on board commemorative event to mark the 20th anniversary of the World Trade Centre attacks, which happened in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll never forget how connected our two countries are, and how much this event affected the world\u2026This will be an extremely memorable moment for me over my career,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nearing the end of the deployment, the entire navigation department gathered on the bridge. Commander Corey Gleason, the ship\u2019s Commanding Officer, awarded a bridge watch keeping ticket to LTJG Luchau, officially recognizing the captain\u2019s trust in his abilities to take charge of the ship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole event is unbelievable, just the fact that an American officer has earned the trust of a Canadian captain is incredible,\u201d LTJG Luchau said. \u201cI feel really lucky, and very proud to have been here and to have had these experiences with the crew.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As the deployment reached its end, LTJG Luchau ignored the crew countdowns, wishing to thoroughly enjoy the experience until the very last day.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI came on board and was immediately accepted by the crew. I\u2019m so thankful for that and for everyone\u2019s support. This experience \u2013 circumnavigating North America, the journey through the Northwest Passage, and interdicting two vessels on Operation <\/span>Caribbe<\/span><\/i> \u2013 this will be a highlight of my career.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u00ab\u00a0J\u2019ai entendu parler de la possibilit\u00e9 de voyager dans l\u2019Arctique, et sans h\u00e9siter, j\u2019ai propos\u00e9 mon nom, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le LTJG\u00a0Luchau, en pr\u00e9cisant qu\u2019il n\u2019avait pas de grands espoirs d\u2019\u00eatre s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9. Puis un jour, j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 demand\u00e9 dans la cabine de mon commandant en second o\u00f9 j\u2019ai vu qu\u2019il \u00e9tait au t\u00e9l\u00e9phone. Il m\u2019a pos\u00e9 une question\u00a0: Avez-vous un passeport valide?\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Peu de temps apr\u00e8s, il s\u2019est rendu \u00e0 Ottawa pour une p\u00e9riode de quarantaine, puis \u00e0 Iqaluit, au Nunavut, pour voir le navire.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

En plus de renforcer les relations de travail entre la Marine royale canadienne et la Marine des \u00c9tats-Unis, les marins comme le LTJG\u00a0Luchau qui sont s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9s pour le programme d\u2019\u00e9change se familiarisent avec les syst\u00e8mes de fonctionnement et les instructions permanentes d\u2019op\u00e9ration de l\u2019autre pays.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le LTJG\u00a0Luchau a assum\u00e9 les t\u00e2ches que l\u2019on attend d\u2019un officier de guerre navale\u00a0: assurer des quarts, assister \u00e0 des expos\u00e9s et \u00e0 des conf\u00e9rences, \u00e9tudier et aider les scientifiques de Recherche et d\u00e9veloppement pour la d\u00e9fense Canada \u00e0 lancer un nouveau syst\u00e8me remorqu\u00e9. Comme effort suppl\u00e9mentaire, il a \u00e9galement dirig\u00e9 l\u2019activit\u00e9 comm\u00e9morative \u00e0 bord visant \u00e0 marquer le 20<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0anniversaire des attaques du World Trade Center, qui ont eu lieu \u00e0 New York le 11\u00a0septembre 2001.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Je n\u2019oublierai jamais \u00e0 quel point nos deux\u00a0pays sont li\u00e9s, et \u00e0 quel point cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement a touch\u00e9 le monde entier… Ce sera un moment extr\u00eamement m\u00e9morable pour moi au cours de ma carri\u00e8re\u00a0\u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vers la fin du d\u00e9ploiement, l\u2019ensemble du d\u00e9partement de la navigation s\u2019est r\u00e9uni sur la passerelle. Le capitaine de fr\u00e9gate\u00a0Corey Gleason, commandant du navire, a remis un certificat de quart \u00e0 la passerelle au LTJG\u00a0Luchau, ce qui reconna\u00eet officiellement la confiance du capitaine dans ses capacit\u00e9s d\u2019assumer la responsabilit\u00e9 du navire.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Toute cette activit\u00e9 est incroyable, le simple fait qu\u2019un officier am\u00e9ricain ait gagn\u00e9 la confiance d\u2019un capitaine canadien est incroyable, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le LTJG\u00a0Luchau. Je me sens vraiment chanceux, et tr\u00e8s fier, d\u2019avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 ici et d\u2019avoir v\u00e9cu ces exp\u00e9riences avec l\u2019\u00e9quipage.\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Alors que le d\u00e9ploiement touchait \u00e0 sa fin, il a ignor\u00e9 les comptes \u00e0 rebours de l\u2019\u00e9quipage, et souhaitait profiter pleinement de l\u2019exp\u00e9rience jusqu\u2019au tout dernier jour.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Je suis arriv\u00e9 \u00e0 bord et j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 imm\u00e9diatement accept\u00e9 par l\u2019\u00e9quipage. Je suis tr\u00e8s reconnaissant pour cela et pour le soutien de chacun.
