Asterix crew expand their Walk for Autism<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Raise your hand if you or someone you know has Autism in their family. You\u2019d be surprised to know that there are more of you than you think.<\/span><\/p>\n

I am a father of three amazing kids, two boys and a girl, and both of my boys are Autistic. I\u2019m used to the questions and the looks, and I know that our family life is very different from everyone else\u2019s. It is what it is. Without the support of organizations like Autism Nova Scotia, however, our life would be infinitely harder.<\/span><\/p>\n

Autism Nova Scotia is a community-based organization that builds understanding, acceptance, and inclusion for individuals on the Autism Spectrum and their families through leadership, advocacy, training and programming. They are always looking for support for their great work through awareness, funds, volunteers, and memberships One of their major charity drives is the annual Walk Your Way for Autism, held throughout the province by Autism Nova Scotia\u2019s nine Chapter Regions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Over recent years I have been able to successfully challenge my crewmates to raise funds and awareness by supporting the Walk for Autism. The first year, I was deployed with HMCS <\/span>Toronto<\/span><\/i> and we managed to scrape up $4,000. The next year, I was posted to NRU Asterix, and despite their smaller crew size and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were still able to raise $1,500.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, I issued a challenge to our crew.\u00a0 I wanted to match or beat last year\u2019s final tally. Due to the fluctuating COVID restrictions in Nova Scotia, Autism Nova Scotia decided to postpone their Walk date until September, and that allowed us to hold a couple of extra events to help raise money to the team.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, our sailing schedule put us back in Halifax for the Walk date, but COVID restrictions meant that it was going to be another Virtual Walk for Autism. This allowed our crew to be able to walk in their neighbourhoods, with their families, and also meant that all of our crew, including our RAS teams from the West Coast and the civilian hitch that wasn\u2019t onboard, were able to participate with us. With maximum participation comes maximum dividends. The crew not only met my challenge of doing better than last year, they crushed it, raising $2,100.00 for Autism Nova Scotia, putting us, again, as the second-highest corporate fundraising team in the Halifax-area, coming in behind Autism Nova Scotia\u2019s own team.<\/span><\/p>\n

A big shout out goes to both hitches of our civilian crew, who made up a good chunk of our donations this year, as well as one of our former members who auctioned off not just one, but three spa days to our Sick Bay bathtub. With team involvement like we have on Asterix, I am sure we will be as successful next year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Levez la main si vous \u00eates autiste ou si quelqu\u2019un de votre entourage a une personne autiste dans sa famille. Vous seriez surpris d\u2019apprendre que vous \u00eatre plus nombreux que vous ne le pensez.<\/span><\/p>\n

Je suis le p\u00e8re de trois enfants extraordinaires, deux gar\u00e7ons et une fille, et mes deux gar\u00e7ons sont autistes. Je suis habitu\u00e9 aux questions et aux regards, et je sais que notre vie de famille est tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rente de celle des autres. C\u2019est comme \u00e7a. Toutefois, sans le soutien d\u2019organismes comme Autism Nova Scotia, notre vie serait infiniment plus difficile.<\/span><\/p>\n

Autism Nova Scotia est un organisme communautaire qui favorise la compr\u00e9hension, l\u2019acceptation et l\u2019inclusion des personnes atteintes du trouble du spectre de l\u2019autisme et de leur famille, au moyen de son leadership, de la d\u00e9fense de leurs droits, de la formation et de programmes. L\u2019organisme est toujours \u00e0 la recherche d\u2019appui, sous forme de sensibilisation, de financement, de b\u00e9n\u00e9voles et de membres pour accomplir son excellent travail. L\u2019une de ses principales campagnes de charit\u00e9 est le Walk Your Way for Autism (marche annuelle pour l\u2019autisme), qui se tient dans toute la province et est organis\u00e9e par les neuf chapitres r\u00e9gionaux d\u2019Autism Nova Scotia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Au cours des derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, j\u2019ai r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 mettre mes co\u00e9quipiers au d\u00e9fi de recueillir des fonds et de sensibiliser la population en participant \u00e0 la Walk Your Way for Autism. La premi\u00e8re ann\u00e9e, j\u2019\u00e9tais affect\u00e9 au NCSM <\/span>Toronto<\/span><\/i> et nous sommes tout juste parvenus \u00e0 amasser 4\u00a0000\u00a0$. L\u2019ann\u00e9e suivante, j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 affect\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019URN <\/span>Asterix<\/span><\/i>, et malgr\u00e9 la taille r\u00e9duite de son \u00e9quipage et l\u2019incidence de la pand\u00e9mie de COVID-19, nous avons tout de m\u00eame \u00e9t\u00e9 en mesure de recueillir 1\u00a0500\u00a0$.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cette ann\u00e9e, j\u2019ai lanc\u00e9 un d\u00e9fi \u00e0 notre \u00e9quipage. Je voulais \u00e9galer ou battre le montant final de l\u2019an dernier. En raison des restrictions changeantes li\u00e9es \u00e0 la COVID-19 en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse, Autism Nova Scotia a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de reporter la date de leur marche \u00e0 septembre, ce qui nous a permis d\u2019organiser quelques activit\u00e9s suppl\u00e9mentaires pour aider l\u2019\u00e9quipe \u00e0 recueillir des fonds.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cette ann\u00e9e, notre calendrier de navigation nous a ramen\u00e9s \u00e0 Halifax \u00e0 temps pour la marche. Toutefois, en raison des restrictions li\u00e9es \u00e0 la COVID-19, la marche pour l\u2019autisme devait \u00e0 nouveau se faire virtuellement. Ainsi, les membres de notre \u00e9quipage ont pu marcher dans leur quartier accompagn\u00e9 de leur famille, mais \u00e9galement l\u2019ensemble de l\u2019\u00e9quipage a pu y participer avec nous, y compris les \u00e9quipes de REM de la c\u00f4te Ouest et les membres civils qui n\u2019\u00e9taient pas \u00e0 bord. Avec une participation maximale, on obtient des r\u00e9sultats maximaux. L\u2019\u00e9quipage n\u2019a pas seulement relev\u00e9 mon d\u00e9fi visant \u00e0 mieux faire que l\u2019an dernier, il l\u2019a \u00e9cras\u00e9. Il a recueilli 2\u00a0100\u00a0$ pour Autism Nova Scotia, ce qui nous a permis de nous classer, une fois de plus, au deuxi\u00e8me rang des \u00e9quipes ayant recueilli le plus de fonds dans la r\u00e9gion d\u2019Halifax, derri\u00e8re l\u2019\u00e9quipe d\u2019Autism Nova Scotia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nous tenons \u00e0 remercier nos deux \u00e9quipes de membres civils, qui ont recueilli une bonne partie de nos dons cette ann\u00e9e, ainsi que l\u2019un de nos anciens membres qui a vendu aux ench\u00e8res non pas une, mais trois visites en station thermale \u00e0 notre bain de l\u2019infirmerie. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une \u00e9quipe aussi impliqu\u00e9e que celle de l\u2019URN <\/span>Asterix<\/span><\/i>, je suis certain que nous conna\u00eetrons autant de succ\u00e8s l\u2019an prochain.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
