On September 22, Goodridge retired from her position as barber at Fleet Management Facility Cape Scott.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She got her start as a military barber in late summer 1983. To put how long ago that was into context, Return of the Jedi was the big blockbuster summer movie that year, and Madonna had just released her debut album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThirty-eight years is a long time,\u201d Goodridge said. \u201cI still love cutting hair\u2026 but I\u2019m tired. You know when it\u2019s time\u2026 and it\u2019s time for me.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goodridge, who grew up in Mill Cove, NS, near Hubbards, got her start in the hair-cutting business early. In fact, when she finished her training at the Atlantic Barbering and Hairstyling Academy she was the youngest registered barber in North America, at just 16 years of age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working first at the iconic Golden Clipper \u2013 back when it was still on Spring Garden Road \u2013 and then at a hair salon on Dalhousie University campus, Goodridge had already decided that she preferred barbering to hairstyling when a friend recommended her for the military barber job.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe barber up at Stad was having trouble with his barbers\u2026 drinking on the job, not showing up\u2026 that sort of thing. A friend I\u2019d gone to school with suggested he give me a try.\u00a0 He did, and it worked out,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Goodridge says she was \u201cpetrified\u201d when she first started out, she fell in love with the job immediately, especially the pace of work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI loved the speed. The time would just fly by, especially on the days we\u2019d get an entire ship\u2019s company. That\u2019s what it was like then, they might bring in 100 men and say they\u2019d be back in a couple of hours to get them,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how fast can she do a regulation military haircut?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you\u2019re in a rush, I can do a full haircut in three minutes,\u201d Goodridge laughed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When she first began cutting hair on the Navy base, Goodridge worked in a traditional-style barbershop on Stadacona\u2019s A block outfitted with a classic red Belmont barber chair \u2014 the same chair that now sits in the Submarine Trainer that trains personnel on the Victoria-class submarines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After that shop closed, Goodridge moved down to HMC Halifax Dockyard, to a shop near the former Fire Hall, before her final move to FMF Cape Scott in 2004 \u2014 on the second floor, down the hall from the cafeteria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, Goodridge has cut the hair of thousands of sailors, many of them repeat customers who she first met as newly-joined recruits, some going on deployment for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI remember when the Gulf War started in 1991, I was really busy as they\u2019d had orders to go. I had two young French guys going out, they\u2019d never even been on a ship before and here they were going off to war. I could feel their fear,\u201d she said, her smile dropping for a moment before shaking her head and cracking a joke. \u201cI\u2019ve often said, I\u2019m the world\u2019s cheapest therapist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most interesting parts of the job, Goodridge said, is that in the run of an average day she would have a range of customers \u2014 from the top brass to the lower ranks, and everyone in between.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some canny officers would tap into the knowledge they knew Goodridge gleaned from conversations with the junior ranks as she cut their hair. Back in the early 2000s, for instance, when Rear-Admiral Bruce MacLean held command of MARLANT, he\u2019d regularly stop in for a haircut and a chat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c\u2018How\u2019s my dockyard doing?\u2019 That was always his first question,\u201d Goodridge said. \u201cI\u2019d never reveal my sources, but I\u2019d be honest about what I was hearing. You do hear a lot of things if you know how to be quiet and listen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although she knows it\u2019s the right time to leave, it won\u2019t be easy, Goodridge said, shedding a few tears as she recounts how many people have dropped into the barbershop to say farewell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the past if someone would get posted it was never a big deal because they\u2019re Navy guys and they would always end up back here at some point so we\u2019d just say \u2018See ya!\u2019,\u201d she said. \u201cWord\u2019s gotten out that I\u2019m leaving now and a lot of my older customers have come round. It\u2019s been so nice\u2026 but it\u2019s hard because we\u2019re really saying goodbye this time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The barbershop at FMF Cape Scott will remain open, with Amanda and Letitia \u201ctaking the baton,\u201d Goodridge said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And for Goodridge? She\u2019ll continue with her \u201csecond job\u201d of property management, and enjoy spending time with her four cats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m going to miss it here.
