Design phase for temporary Stadacona fitness facility underway\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n

On October 31, 2018,\u00a0CFB Halifax\u2019s\u00a0Stadacona Fitness, Sports and Recreation Centre (STADPLEX) closed its doors for the last time after 75 years in operation. At that time, a comprehensive Real Property Operations (RPOS(H)) infrastructure plan was developed to address the short, medium and long-term fitness needs of\u00a0the\u00a0Base population.<\/p>\n

CFB Borden Fitness Facility<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Since then, local Defence Team members, visitors of the Base and neighbouring residents have likely noticed lots of activity taking place on the STADPLEX property. Following a lengthy demolition period, the space that housed the 8,853 square meter facility is now neat and tidy, featuring a new parking area and sidewalk, a gravel pad and landscaping.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>And there\u2019s more planned for this property.\u00a0Where STADPLEX once\u00a0stood\u00a0will soon be a new gym hub for local Defence Team members.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWe are currently entering the design phase for a temporary, winterized fitness facility, to be constructed on this property,\u201d\u00a0explains\u00a0Maj Mandy Landolt,\u00a0RPOS(H) Officer Commanding.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Modelled after a similar facility at CFB Borden, the\u00a01,250 square metre fitness space\u00a0at Stadacona\u00a0will be heated and air-conditioned, and will include an open gymnasium area for basketball, volleyball, badminton and ball hockey; an area for cardio machines and weights; locker rooms with showers and washrooms; a reception office for fitness and sports instructors; and a storage room for equipment.\u00a0Considerably more compact than the original STADPLEX gym, the facility will have a maximum capacity of approximately 134 members; this capacity will be reduced as required if physical distancing measures are still in effect upon final construction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>While PSP Halifax staff have been offering quality fitness services at both the Fleet and Shearwater gyms as well as online, they are looking forward to bringing some of these services back to Stadacona as the operators of this new facility.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cBetween the closure of STADPLEX in 2018 and the current challenges of operating in a COVID-19 environment, we\u2019ve certainly had our work cut out for us to ensure we can continue providing quality physical fitness programming to our local Defence community,\u201d explains Stacey Robichaud, the Fitness, Sports and Recreation Manager at PSP Halifax. \u201cHaving added space for fitness activities at Stadacona \u2013 even in a small area \u2013 will be a welcome addition. We will be ready to set up shop when construction is completed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The facility design is scheduled for completion by May 2021, with the construction timeline to be confirmed. The structure will remain in place until a permanent replacement facility is approved, funded, and constructed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Capt(N) Sean Williams<\/span>, CFB Halifax Base Commander, has been tracking this project since he assumed command in August 2020. He is an advocate for healthy living, and knows that any additional space for fitness services will be important for the overall health and wellness of the Base community. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWe look forward to introducing \u00a0this new capability at Stadacona, as it will allow us to bolster our existing fitness programming and services in order to meet the diverse fitness needs of the Base \u201c explains Capt(N) Williams. \u201cI want to thank our incredible PSP Halifax team and our colleagues at Real Property Operations Section (Halifax) and Defence Construction Canada for their ongoing efforts to ensure this project comes to fruition.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Depuis, les membres de l\u2019\u00c9quipe de la D\u00e9fense locale, les visiteurs de la base et les r\u00e9sidents de la r\u00e9gion ont probablement remarqu\u00e9 que beaucoup d\u2019activit\u00e9s se d\u00e9roulaient sur la propri\u00e9t\u00e9 du STADPLEX. Sur le mod\u00e8le d\u2019une installation similaire \u00e0 la BFC\u00a0Borden, l\u2019espace de conditionnement physique de 1\u00a0250\u00a0m\u00e8tres carr\u00e9s \u00e0 Stadacona sera chauff\u00e9 et aura de l\u2019air climatis\u00e9, et comprendra\u00a0: un espace de gymnase ouvert pour le basket-ball, le volley-ball, le badminton et le hockey-balle; une zone pour les appareils d\u2019entra\u00eenement cardiovasculaire et les halt\u00e8res; des vestiaires avec douches et toilettes; un bureau de r\u00e9ception pour les instructeurs de conditionnement physique et de sport; et un local d\u2019entreposage du mat\u00e9riel. Beaucoup plus compacte que le gymnase STADPLEX d\u2019origine, l\u2019installation aura une capacit\u00e9 maximale d\u2019environ 134\u00a0membres; cette capacit\u00e9 sera r\u00e9duite au besoin si des mesures d\u2019\u00e9loignement physique sont encore en vigueur lors de l\u2019ach\u00e8vement des travaux de construction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Bien que le personnel des PSP d\u2019Halifax ait offert des services de conditionnement physique de qualit\u00e9 aux gymnases de la Flotte et de Shearwater ainsi qu\u2019en ligne, il est impatient de ramener certains de ces services \u00e0 Stadacona en tant qu\u2019exploitant de cette nouvelle installation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Avec la fermeture de STADPLEX en 2018 et les d\u00e9fis actuels li\u00e9s au fonctionnement dans un environnement de COVID-19, nous avons certainement eu du pain sur la planche pour nous assurer de pouvoir continuer d\u2019offrir des programmes de conditionnement physique de qualit\u00e9 \u00e0 notre communaut\u00e9 locale de la D\u00e9fense, explique Stacey Robichaud, gestionnaire du conditionnement physique, des sports et des loisirs des PSP d\u2019Halifax. L\u2019ajout d\u2019un espace pour les activit\u00e9s de conditionnement physique \u00e0 Stadacona \u2013 m\u00eame d\u2019un petit espace\u00a0\u2013 sera appr\u00e9ci\u00e9. Nous serons pr\u00eats \u00e0 nous installer lorsque la construction sera termin\u00e9e.\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

La conception de l\u2019installation devrait \u00eatre termin\u00e9e au plus tard en mai 2021, et le calendrier de construction doit \u00eatre confirm\u00e9. La structure restera en place jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce qu\u2019une installation de remplacement permanente soit approuv\u00e9e, financ\u00e9e et construite.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Le Capv\u00a0Sean Williams, commandant de la BFC\u00a0Halifax, suit ce projet depuis qu\u2019il a assum\u00e9 le commandement en ao\u00fbt 2020. Il fait la promotion de la vie saine et sait que tout espace suppl\u00e9mentaire pour les services de conditionnement physique sera important pour la sant\u00e9 et le bien-\u00eatre de la communaut\u00e9 de la base en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
