During the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) talks between the governments of Mexico, United States, and Canada, workplace safety within the boundaries of all three nations was discussed by labour department representatives. Canada&#8217;s representative at these talks was familiar with Canada&#8217;s COHS Week and he suggested to his Mexican and American counterparts that their countries may wish to become involved in a similar endeavour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This years\u2019 theme:\u00a0\u201c<\/span><b>Together We Can Create Safe Workplaces and Communities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d is particularly relevant during the current COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0 The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all of us and changed the way we do things. This year NAOSH week can still be celebrated virtually using #SafetyandHealthWeek.\u00a0 We are all helping to keep our communities safe by practicing physical distancing, washing our hands frequently, coughing and sneezing into our sleeve or tissue and ensuring enhanced cleaning of commonly touched surfaces. You are encouraged to participate in NAOSH week by submitting personalized suggestions\u00a0regarding the additional measures taken in your workplace and home to prevent health and safety mishaps\u00a0to MARL SE at\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"mailto: N48FormationSafetyandEnvironment@forces.gc.ca\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">+N48FormationSafetyandEnvironment@forces.gc.ca<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You eat because you need food to live. You sleep because your body needs the rest. You go to work to provide for yourself and your family.<\/p>\n<p>Have you stopped to think about your reasons for working safely? Do you follow safety procedures because your employer says you must or to get promoted?\u00a0 Stop and think \u2013 you have far better reasons for working safely, and here are only a few examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You want to continue working to support your family in the comfortable lifestyle to which they have become accustomed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some accidents result in months of pain and even hospital stays. Some pain is chronic and is never resolved.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A disability could end all your favorite recreational activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A head injury could impact your ability to speak, read, or even enjoy your favorite TV show.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You want to enjoy life with your family and friends without the changes that a significant injury would impose.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have plans for the future. Career! Family! Kids! Grandkids! Travel! Retirement!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A workplace accident can permanently change all your plans in an instant. With an accident, you could be on your way to the hospital and might need many months of painful therapy to recover. While working from home has clear advantages, it is important to remember that new workspaces can pose concerns.\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0you work and\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0you work is important to your health and safety. The following recommendations will help ensure you stay safe and healthy while working from home:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Check your posture regularly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintain proper posture, paying careful attention to positioning of head, neck, spine, arms, wrists, hips, thighs and feet. Basically, ensure the small of your back is supported, your shoulders are relaxed (not slumped and not elevated), and that there is no pressure under your thighs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Don\u2019t ignore discomfort!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many reasons why computer users experience discomfort. At best, discomfort is an annoyance and can inhibit productivity. At worst, it can lead to injuries and\/or disabilities. It is important to address discomfort and the possible causes of it as soon as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>3)\u00a0Take your breaks in full.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take frequent mini-breaks throughout the day to give muscles and joints a chance to rest and recover. Your body wants you to move! Also be sure to take breaks in their entirety. Don&#8217;t short-change yourself, especially during your lunch hour. You can use a simple clock or timer on the screen when you take a break. If you return to your desk after only 40 minutes, walk for another 20.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Avoid distractions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If possible, work in a quiet room with the door closed. If there are distracting noises, try headphones, ear plugs, soft music or a quiet fan to reduce or mask the sounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>5) Continue to socialize.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t forget that not all stress is physical. To help fill the socializing gap while working remotely, find a colleague you can call when you\u2019re feeling the need to chat. Hopping on a social video call instead isn\u2019t a bad idea, either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>6)\u00a0Exercise.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all know that exercise is essential for overall health. You might be getting less of it when working at home. You may be walking less because you are not commuting to and from an office, going to meetings, and so on. Make sure that you make time to exercise when working at home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a little\u00a0planning, we can ensure our health and wellness when working away from the office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What additional measures have you taken in your workplace and home to prevent health and safety concerns? Our homes are not just a place for us to live \u2013 they have become our offices, schools and playgrounds. This is a time when injuries for children may be on the rise, which can put families at risk during trips to the emergency room.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The good news is, there are safety precautions you can work into your busy days to help prevent injuries and keep kids safe at home, at play and on the road.<\/p>\n<p>Safety at Home:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Store household cleaning products safely to prevent poisoning and save the IWK Regional Poison Centre number in your phone: 1-800-565-8161.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep all medicine out of children\u2019s reach and sight, even medicine and vitamins you take every day.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep hot foods and beverages away from the edge of counters and tables.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Separate toys by age and keep small game pieces away from young children and toddlers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure young children are within arm\u2019s reach of an adult during bath time and watch kids of all ages when they are swimming in backyard pools.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a safe place for kids to play by installing safety gates on stairs and guards on windows to prevent falls, keeping small objects and cords to window blinds out of reach and securing top-heavy furniture and TVs.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Staying Active and Injury Free \u2013 While Physical Distancing<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look left, right and left again before crossing the street.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put phones and headphones down when crossing the street.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wear a properly fitted helmet when biking, skateboarding, riding a scooter or in-line skating.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For additional information and tools, visit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/childsafetylink.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/childsafetylink.ca\/<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What additional measures have you taken in your home to prevent accidents? There are several resources that can be used to bring your community together while practicing physical distancing.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Form a neighbourhood social network \u2013 Examples include Facebook Groups and Nextdoor.\u00a0 You can use these groups to talk about safety issues, make safety-related announcements and much more.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conduct a neighbourhood cleanup \u2013 Trash and debris are both an environmental issue and a potential slip\/trip\/fall hazard. On your next neighbourhood walk, bring a garbage bag and gloves to collect any waste you find along the way.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start a Neighbourhood Watch \u2013 Through Neighbourhood Watch, neighbours come together to reduce crime in their community by learning how to be alert to and report suspicious activity, make their homes less inviting to thieves and make their personal property less desirable.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secure your own space \u2013 Trim any overgrown shrubs or gardens that may block sidewalks and keep your porch light on to help keep the street lit at night. Before you leave your home or go to bed for the night, be sure all your doors and windows are locked.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What additional measures have you taken to make your community safer? It is important for all of us to acknowledge these impacts and to engage in an open dialogue about them, including ways to maintain and support our mental health.<\/p>\n<p>Tips to Take Care of Your Mental Health include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get information from reliable sources, such as\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.canada.ca\/coronavirus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canada.ca\/coronavirus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay informed but follow news coverage about COVID-19 in moderation. Take deep breaths, stretch or meditate. Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise regularly, and get plenty of sleep.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make time to step back and consider how to take advantage of unexpected flexibility in your daily routine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay connected.
