Une ancienne matelote de la Marine royale canadienne (MRC) s'est inspir\u00e9e de son exp\u00e9rience au sein de la flotte pour \u00e9crire SHIFT, un thriller de science-fiction mettant en sc\u00e8ne un sous-marin canadien et son \u00e9quipage confront\u00e9s \u00e0 un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne inexpliqu\u00e9.<\/p>\n

R.T. Wells a servi dans la Force r\u00e9guli\u00e8re de 2010 \u00e0 2016, quittant les Forces arm\u00e9es avec le grade de matelote de 1re classe. Au cours de sa carri\u00e8re, elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 affect\u00e9e \u00e0 St. John\u2019s, \u00e0 Halifax, puis \u00e0 Esquimalt, en Colombie-Britannique, o\u00f9 elle a approfondi son int\u00e9r\u00eat particulier pour les sous-marins.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lorsqu\u2019elle s\u2019est engag\u00e9e dans la Marine, Wells esp\u00e9rait initialement devenir sous-marine, mais elle s\u2019est retrouv\u00e9e \u00e0 travailler sur les sous-marins de la classe Victoria lors d\u2019une affectation au sein des Forces maritimes du Pacifique. L\u00e0-bas, elle a contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 la r\u00e9\u00e9criture et \u00e0 la r\u00e9orent d\u2019instructions claires pour mener ces essais en toute s\u00e9curit\u00e9.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cette exp\u00e9rience a fi ganisation des manuels d\u2019essais des sous-marins, veillant \u00e0 ce que les \u00e9quipages dispos ni par constituer l\u2019une des sources d\u2019inspiration de son premier roman, dont l\u2019action se d\u00e9roule en 2013 et qui s\u2019inspire de la culture et de la vie professionnelle des marins et des sous-mariniers de la MRC.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dans SHIFT, l\u2019\u00e9quipage du NCSM Wolfville, un navire fictif, est confront\u00e9 \u00e0 un d\u00e9fi inhabituel lorsque son sous-marin de classe Victoria commence, de mani\u00e8re inexplicable, \u00e0 se t\u00e9l\u00e9porter vers diff\u00e9rentes r\u00e9gions du monde toutes les cinq heures. \u00c0 chaque arriv\u00e9e inattendue, le navire se retrouve dans des eaux inconnues et l\u2019\u00e9quipage doit \u00e9lucider la cause de ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne tout en g\u00e9rant l\u2019attention qu\u2019il suscite aupr\u00e8s des autres marines.<\/p>\n

Wells a toujours eu pour ambition d\u2019\u00e9crire un roman, et un mentor rencontr\u00e9 lors d\u2019un cours d\u2019\u00e9criture cr\u00e9ative l\u2019a aid\u00e9e \u00e0 choisir les sous-marins comme th\u00e8me central apr\u00e8s qu\u2019elle eut envisag\u00e9 plusieurs id\u00e9es d\u2019histoires inspir\u00e9es de la Marine. Elle s\u2019est d\u2019abord essay\u00e9e \u00e0 une histoire de fant\u00f4mes plus traditionnelle avant de d\u00e9velopper le myst\u00e8re de science-fiction qui est au c\u0153ur de SHIFT.<\/p>\n

Elle d\u00e9crit ce concept comme \u00ab un m\u00e9lange entre \u00c0 la poursuite d\u2019Octobre rouge et Star Trek. \u00bb\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bien que les recherches et la r\u00e9daction li\u00e9es au sous-marin de classe Victoria aient pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 certains d\u00e9fis, Wells estime que le cadre canadien contribue \u00e9galement \u00e0 distinguer cette histoire des autres \u0153uvres de fiction d\u2019inspiration militaire.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Ce n\u2019est ni l\u2019histoire des \u00c9tats-Unis, ni celle de la Grande-Bretagne. C\u2019est notre histoire, et c\u2019est ce qui, selon moi, la rend vraiment unique. Tom Clancy y est parvenu avant moi, tout comme Gene Roddenberry, mais ce qui manque dans leurs intrigues respectives, c\u2019est notre pr\u00e9sence. \u00bb<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Cela a \u00e9t\u00e9 une immense satisfaction d\u2019\u00e9crire sur ce sujet \u00bb, a-t-elle ajout\u00e9.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Vivant d\u00e9sormais en Alberta, Wells pr\u00e9voit de se remettre \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9criture au cours de la nouvelle ann\u00e9e, apr\u00e8s s\u2019\u00eatre consacr\u00e9e au lancement de SHIFT, qui devrait \u00eatre le premier tome d\u2019une trilogie.<\/p>\n
