Miller, a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 une nouvelle \u00e9dition de son ouvrage consacr\u00e9 aux op\u00e9rations de la Marine canadienne pendant ce conflit.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The launch party was hosted by the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust, aboard His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) <\/span>Sackville<\/span><\/i> on September 11.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Canada’s Navy in the First Gulf War<\/span><\/i><\/a>[La Marine canadienne pendant la premi\u00e8re guerre du Golfe], co\u00e9crit avec Sharon Hobson, est un t\u00e9moignage de premi\u00e8re main sur la participation navale du Canada au conflit de 1990-1991. Miller commandait le groupe op\u00e9rationnel canadien d\u00e9ploy\u00e9 dans le golfe Persique dans le cadre de l\u2019op\u00e9ration FRICTION. \u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, la composante navale des Forces canadiennes portait le nom de Commandement maritime; elle a repris le nom de Marine royale canadienne en 2011.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Initialement publi\u00e9 en 1995 sous le titre The Persian Excursion, cet ouvrage retrace le r\u00f4le du Canada dans ce conflit, de son d\u00e9but \u00e0 sa fin.<\/p>\n

La nouvelle \u00e9dition, publi\u00e9e par Formac, comprend un chapitre suppl\u00e9mentaire consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9volution de la Marine au cours des 35 derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lors du lancement du livre, Miller a racont\u00e9 des anecdotes tir\u00e9es de l\u2019ouvrage, notamment les efforts extraordinaires n\u00e9cessaires pour pr\u00e9parer les navires \u00e0 la guerre. Apr\u00e8s l\u2019invasion du Kowe\u00eft par l\u2019Irak en ao\u00fbt 1990, le Canada a d\u00e9ploy\u00e9 deux navires de guerre et un navire de ravitaillement. Chacun de ces navires a n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 d\u2019importantes mises \u00e0 niveau de son \u00e9quipement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab L\u2019arsenal a mis deux semaines \u00e0 installer tout ce nouvel \u00e9quipement \u00e0 bord, alors que cela aurait normalement pris huit mois \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Miller, mentionnant m\u00eame un ultime passage chez Canadian Tire pour se procurer une pi\u00e8ce manquante.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Une fois dans le golfe, Miller et le groupe op\u00e9rationnel naval ont supervis\u00e9 la Force logistique de combat, compos\u00e9e d\u2019une soixantaine de navires provenant des nations alli\u00e9es.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Miller a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que ce livre avait \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9crit pour montrer aux Canadiens \u00e0 quel point leur Marine peut \u00eatre efficace dans les moments d\u00e9cisifs. Il a rappel\u00e9 avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 encourag\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9crire par le chef d\u2019\u00e9tat-major de la d\u00e9fense de l\u2019\u00e9poque, le g\u00e9n\u00e9ral John de Chastelain, \u00e0 son retour du Golfe. De Chastelain lui avait fait remarquer que diriger une force de coalition en temps de guerre \u00e9tait une responsabilit\u00e9 qu\u2019un Canadien n\u2019avait pas assum\u00e9e depuis la Seconde Guerre mondiale.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Il a soulign\u00e9 le r\u00f4le crucial jou\u00e9 par le NCSM Protecteur, qui a ravitaill\u00e9 70 navires alli\u00e9s pendant la guerre. Ce navire embarquait \u00e9galement 35 femmes, ce qui marquait la premi\u00e8re fois que le Canada d\u00e9ployait des femmes en zone de combat pour servir en premi\u00e8re ligne.<\/p>\n

Dans un autre r\u00e9cit tir\u00e9 de cet ouvrage, Miller d\u00e9crit comment le NCSM Athabaskan a travers\u00e9 \u00ab sur la pointe des pieds \u00bb un champ de mines pour porter secours au navire am\u00e9ricain USS Princeton apr\u00e8s que celui-ci eut heurt\u00e9 une mine au large du Kowe\u00eft.<\/p>\n

Il a \u00e9galement \u00e9voqu\u00e9 le soutien re\u00e7u du pays pendant la guerre, notamment les pizzas gratuites livr\u00e9es aux navires par un \u00e9tablissement Greco Pizza d\u2019Halifax, ainsi que les homards de Clearwater pour No\u00ebl. Il a pr\u00e9cis\u00e9 que les marins avaient vot\u00e9 pour prendre la mer la veille et le jour de No\u00ebl, car c\u2019\u00e9tait en mer qu\u2019ils se sentaient le plus en s\u00e9curit\u00e9.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
