Le navire canadien de Sa Majest\u00e9 (NCSM) Robert Hampton Gray est devenu le premier navire de patrouille extrac\u00f4tier et de l\u2019Arctique (NPEA) de classe Harry DeWolf \u00e0 \u00eatre certifi\u00e9 pour mener des op\u00e9rations a\u00e9riennes en tant que navire sans d\u00e9tachement a\u00e9rien (SWOAD), en embarquant un h\u00e9licopt\u00e8re de la Garde c\u00f4ti\u00e8re canadienne dans le cadre de l\u2019op\u00e9ration NANOOK-TUUGAALIK.<\/p>\n

Le navire a quitt\u00e9 Halifax en ao\u00fbt avec \u00e0 son bord un h\u00e9licopt\u00e8re l\u00e9ger Bell 429 Global Ranger de la Garde c\u00f4ti\u00e8re canadienne (GCC), aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s du HDMS Thetis de la Marine royale danoise et du navire de la Garde c\u00f4ti\u00e8re canadienne George R. Pearkes. C\u2019est \u00e9galement la premi\u00e8re fois qu\u2019un h\u00e9licopt\u00e8re de la GCC est d\u00e9ploy\u00e9 \u00e0 partir d\u2019un navire de la Marine royale canadienne (MRC).<\/p>\n

Le statut SWOAD permet \u00e0 un \u00e9quipage de mener des op\u00e9rations h\u00e9liport\u00e9es, notamment la r\u00e9cup\u00e9ration, le ravitaillement en carburant et le lancement d\u2019un appareil, sans qu\u2019un d\u00e9tachement a\u00e9rien d\u00e9di\u00e9 ne soit embarqu\u00e9, en faisant appel \u00e0 des marins d\u2019autres corps de m\u00e9tier form\u00e9s pour remplir ces fonctions. Il s\u2019agit d\u2019une qualification souvent d\u00e9tenue par les fr\u00e9gates de classe Halifax, mais le Robert Hampton Gray est le premier navire de classe Harry DeWolf \u00e0 l\u2019avoir obtenue et \u00e0 embarquer un h\u00e9licopt\u00e8re \u00e0 des fins op\u00e9rationnelles.<\/p>\n

Pour y parvenir, une formation approfondie a \u00e9t\u00e9 dispens\u00e9e au sein de plusieurs services du navire. Le 17 ao\u00fbt, l\u2019\u00e9quipage a effectu\u00e9 son dernier exercice \u00e9valu\u00e9 de crash sur le pont, simulant un accident d\u2019h\u00e9licopt\u00e8re complexe sur le pont d\u2019envol. Cet exercice a n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 l\u2019intervention de l\u2019\u00e9quipe de sauvetage et de lutte contre les incendies en cas d\u2019accident d\u2019h\u00e9licopt\u00e8re, de l\u2019\u00e9quipe du pont d\u2019envol et de l\u2019\u00e9quipe de prise en charge des bless\u00e9s afin de lutter contre l\u2019incendie simul\u00e9, d\u2019extraire et de soigner les bless\u00e9s, de s\u00e9curiser l\u2019appareil et de remplir les premiers rapports de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 de vol, le tout en coordination \/avec l\u2019\u00e9quipage a\u00e9rien de la GCC embarqu\u00e9.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

La pr\u00e9paration comprenait \u00e9galement des exercices aux postes de vol, le ravitaillement d\u2019h\u00e9licopt\u00e8res et des op\u00e9rations de ravitaillement vertical. Cette technique n\u2019est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement pas utilis\u00e9e par les Forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes, mais elle pourrait constituer une option dans l\u2019Arctique ou dans d\u2019autres r\u00e9gions o\u00f9 les infrastructures portuaires sont minimales.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Depuis son d\u00e9part d\u2019Halifax, le NCSM Robert Hampton Gray a mis cette nouvelle capacit\u00e9 en \u0153uvre presque imm\u00e9diatement. L\u2019\u00e9quipe SWOAD a tout d\u2019abord apport\u00e9 son soutien \u00e0 un exercice de transfert de personnel alli\u00e9, en assurant la coordination tandis que l\u2019h\u00e9licopt\u00e8re Bell 429 embarqu\u00e9 prenait des passagers en vue de leur transfert d\u2019un navire \u00e0 l\u2019autre. Quelques jours plus tard, le m\u00e9decin militaire est mont\u00e9 \u00e0 bord du Bell 429 pour intervenir \u00e0 la suite d\u2019une urgence m\u00e9dicale \u00e0 bord du CCGS George R. Pearkes, en se rendant sur place par voie a\u00e9rienne pour porter secours. Ces deux interventions illustrent le type de flexibilit\u00e9 que la certification SWOAD et l\u2019h\u00e9licopt\u00e8re embarqu\u00e9 sont cens\u00e9s offrir.<\/p>\n
