What is tinnitus?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tinnitus is the\u00a0perception\u00a0of sound\u00a0that does not have an external source, so other people cannot hear it. Tinnitus is commonly described as a ringing, but some people hear other types of sounds, such as roaring, buzzing, or hissing.\u00a0It\u00a0can\u00a0occur in one\u00a0ear\u00a0or both\u00a0ears\u00a0and\u00a0can be\u00a0intermittent\u00a0or constant. Statistics Canada (2019) estimates that 37\u201343% of adult Canadians experience tinnitus, with about 7% reporting severe symptoms that affect sleep, mood, and concentration. Although it may seem simple to define, tinnitus is a complex condition associated with various health issues and can have a significant impact on\u00a0your\u00a0quality of life.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What causes tinnitus?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The exact\u00a0cause\u00a0of tinnitus\u00a0is\u00a0often\u00a0unknown, but tinnitus is a\u00a0sign\u00a0that\u00a0something is wrong in the auditory system.\u00a0The\u00a0auditory system\u00a0includes the ear, auditory nerve, and the parts of the brain that process sound.\u00a0Tinnitus\u00a0can\u00a0be\u00a0caused\u00a0from\u00a0hearing loss,\u00a0noise exposure,\u00a0ear and sinus infections, diseases of the heart or blood vessels, thyroid abnormalities, certain medications, anxiety,\u00a0stress, and head and neck injuries.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why does tinnitus affect people differently?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Developed by Dany Pineault (2026), the iceberg\u00a0model\u00a0of bothersome tinnitus\u00a0helps\u00a0to\u00a0explain why tinnitus affects people differently.\u00a0On\u00a0the surface\u00a0are the auditory\u00a0components,\u00a0including\u00a0the\u00a0tinnitus, hearing\u00a0difficulty, and reduced\u00a0tolerance to sound. Below the surface\u00a0are\u00a0the\u00a0possible\u00a0contributing factors\u00a0such as,\u00a0unhelpful thought patterns, safety-seeking behaviours, stress, anxiety, depression, poor sleep, and reduced overall well-being.\u00a0These\u00a0underlying emotional and health related factors\u00a0are known to\u00a0increase\u00a0the severity of the tinnitus.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What treatment options are available?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, there is no cure for\u00a0tinnitus,\u00a0but\u00a0audiologists can offer\u00a0several treatments to help manage\u00a0your\u00a0symptoms. The treatment will\u00a0depend on the severity\u00a0of your tinnitus and how it\u00a0impacts\u00a0your quality of life.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Amplification\u00a0(hearing aids)\u00a0<\/span><\/b>plays a critical role in managing tinnitus for those with hearing loss.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>The better you are\u00a0hearing conversations and other environmental sounds,\u00a0the less you may notice your tinnitus.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sound\u00a0enrichment (sound therapy)<\/span><\/b>\u00a0involves using external, pleasant\u00a0sounds\u00a0to\u00a0reduce the\u00a0perception\u00a0of tinnitus. Sound enrichment is particularly useful in quiet environments when tinnitus is often\u00a0the\u00a0most noticeable.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Counseling\u00a0<\/span><\/b>helps you understand how to live with your tinnitus. The more you know about your potential aggravating factors, the better you can manage\u00a0the symptoms.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tinnitus habituation<\/span><\/b>\u00a0is designed to help the brain relearn. This approach combines\u00a0counseling\u00a0and sound therapy.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
