Le 4 juin, la base des Forces canadiennes (BFC) d\u2019Esquimalt s\u2019est transform\u00e9e en un lieu de comm\u00e9moration et d\u2019apprentissage alors que le public s\u2019est rassembl\u00e9 pour assister \u00e0 une pr\u00e9sentation multim\u00e9dia poignante rendant hommage au service et au sacrifice du 2e Bataillon de construction. \u00c9crit et interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par la conteuse, dramaturge et musicienne de la ColombieBritannique shayna-adjowa jones, le spectacle *The Bugle Called and Forth They Went* retra\u00e7ait l\u2019histoire du premier et unique bataillon enti\u00e8rement compos\u00e9 de noirs au Canada, form\u00e9 pendant la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale. Cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement a \u00e9t\u00e9 rendu possible gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 D.L. (Door) Gibson, vice-pr\u00e9sident de la BC Black History Awareness Society et gestionnaire de projet pour l\u2019h\u00e9ritage du 2e Bataillon de construction en ColombieBritannique, avec le soutien du Programme de partenariat comm\u00e9moratif d\u2019Affaires des anciens combattants.<\/p>\n

Autoris\u00e9e en juillet 1916, cette unit\u00e9 non combattante et s\u00e9gr\u00e9gu\u00e9e, compos\u00e9e de plus de 600 hommes, a servi en France pour construire, entretenir et r\u00e9parer des routes, des voies ferr\u00e9es et des infrastructures essentielles en temps de guerre \u2014 un travail souvent n\u00e9glig\u00e9 dans les r\u00e9cits historiques, bien qu\u2019il ait \u00e9t\u00e9 essentiel \u00e0 l\u2019effort de guerre des Alli\u00e9s. Le bataillon comptait \u00e9galement 12 hommes originaires de la Colombie-Britannique, dont trois venaient de l\u2019\u00eele Salt Spring; le plus jeune d\u2019entre eux, James Douglas Whims, \u00e2g\u00e9 de 18 ans, ne revint jamais chez lui. Le 2e Bataillon de construction fut dissous en 1920.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab The Bugle Called and Forth They Went \u00bb s\u2019est d\u00e9roul\u00e9 sous la forme d\u2019un r\u00e9cit \u00e0 plusieurs niveaux, m\u00ealant des faits historiques qui invitaient le public \u00e0 se confronter \u00e0 la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 du pass\u00e9 du Canada \u00e0 des r\u00e9cits fictifs racont\u00e9s \u00e0 travers des chansons, des narrations, des textes parl\u00e9s et des sons. Les spectateurs ont \u00e9t\u00e9 invit\u00e9s \u00e0 plonger dans les r\u00e9alit\u00e9s v\u00e9cues par les Canadiens noirs confront\u00e9s aux contradictions du service pour un pays qui, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, leur refusait le droit fondamental de servir dans des r\u00f4les de combat. La narration multim\u00e9dia a ensuite r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 la formation du 2e Bataillon de construction, un unit\u00e9 s\u00e9gr\u00e9gu\u00e9e compos\u00e9e de Canadiens noirs qui avaient choisi de s\u2019enr\u00f4ler, de servir et de se sacrifier malgr\u00e9 les obstacles syst\u00e9miques dress\u00e9s contre eux.<\/p>\n

La narration de Jones n\u2019a pas \u00e9lud\u00e9 le poids \u00e9motionnel de ce sujet historique.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Ce fut un parcours immense que de porter l\u2019histoire de ces hommes dans mon \u00e2me. Je suis aux prises avec la complexit\u00e9 d\u2019honorer ce que cela a repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 pour ces hommes noirs d\u2019\u00eatre finalement envoy\u00e9s \u00e0 la guerre au sein d\u2019un bataillon de travail s\u00e9gr\u00e9gu\u00e9, sans jamais \u00eatre autoris\u00e9s \u00e0 donner leur vie pour ce pays \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Jones.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Je suis toujours aux prises avec la complexit\u00e9 et l\u2019ironie du fait qu\u2019ici m\u00eame, au Canada, nos propres morts \u00e9taient consid\u00e9r\u00e9es comme de seconde classe, comme inf\u00e9rieures au service et aux morts des Blancs. Quel immense et complexe honneur que de donner vie \u00e0 un aper\u00e7u de cette histoire! Je suis reconnaissant de cette occasion \u00e0 la fois crue et noble. \u00bb\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ces r\u00e9flexions ont trouv\u00e9 un \u00e9cho dans le r\u00e9cit central du spectacle, centr\u00e9 sur deux fr\u00e8res fictifs inspir\u00e9s des v\u00e9ritables fr\u00e8res James Douglas et Robert Clark Whims, de l\u2019\u00eele Salt Spring, \u00e0 travers lesquels le public a \u00e9t\u00e9 guid\u00e9 depuis le d\u00e9but de la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale jusqu\u2019\u00e0 sa fin.<\/span><\/p>\n

L\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nement a \u00e9galement rendu hommage aux descendants et aux membres de la communaut\u00e9 li\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00e9ritage du bataillon, notamment aux familles dont les anc\u00eatres ont servi, ainsi qu\u2019aux personnes qui ont contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 pr\u00e9server et \u00e0 faire revivre la m\u00e9moire de cette unit\u00e9 par le biais de travaux d\u2019archivage et d\u2019initiatives comm\u00e9moratives.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

S\u2019exprimant lors de l\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nement, Kenny Craig, responsable de l\u2019engagement au sein de la B.C Black History Awareness Society, a soulign\u00e9 l\u2019importance de se souvenir de ses anc\u00eatres et de l\u2019h\u00e9ritage commun. \u00ab Nous avons de nombreuses origines et de multiples fa\u00e7ons d\u2019\u00eatre arriv\u00e9s sur ces terres et ces territoires \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 M. Craig. L\u2019hymne noir a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par Tekea Ogoh, auteure-compositrice-interpr\u00e8te prim\u00e9e d\u2019origine nig\u00e9riane qui se produit sous le nom de TK the Artist.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le 9 juillet 2022, le tr\u00e8s honorable Justin Trudeau, alors premier ministre du Canada, a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 des excuses officielles et publiques aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de l\u2019honorable Anita Anand, alors ministre de la D\u00e9fense nationale, au nom du gouvernement du Canada, pour le racisme anti-noirs syst\u00e9mique dont ont \u00e9t\u00e9 victimes les membres du 2e Bataillon de construction avant, pendant et longtemps apr\u00e8s la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale. Ces excuses ont \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es \u00e0 Truro, en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse, sur le lieu m\u00eame o\u00f9 le bataillon avait \u00e9t\u00e9 form\u00e9 pour la premi\u00e8re fois.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c0 la fin de *The Bugle Called and Forth They Went*, Jones a fait remarquer : \u00ab Tant que l\u2019histoire de la chasse ne sera pas racont\u00e9e par le lion, elle glorifiera toujours le chasseur. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n
