Dans la fonderie historique de Lunenburg, les Techniciens de materiaux asp\ufeffirant de la Marine royale canadienne (MRC) ont pass\u00e9 deux journ\u00e9es en \ufeffcoulant des pi\u00e8ces de machine en m\u00e9tal fondu. Avec ses \u00e9clairs brillants de m\u00e9tal fondu et ses r\u00e9sultats concrets, le voyage a offert aux \u00e9l\u00e8ves une exp\u00e9rience pratique en contribuant \u00e0 pr\u00e9server une comp\u00e9tence rare que la Marine ne peut pas se permettre \u00e0 perdre.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Les Techniciens de materiaux entretiennent, r\u00e9parent et fabriquent des pi\u00e8ces de machinerie pour les navires de MRC en mer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pendant leur voyage \u00e0 Lunenburg du 5 au 6 mai, une douzaine d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8ves de l\u2019\u00c9cole de la Flotte navale (Atlantique) (EFN(A)) ont coul\u00e9 cinq pi\u00e8ces en aluminium et deux composants en laiton rouge \u00e0 la fonderie, transformant les mati\u00e8res premi\u00e8res en \u00e9bauches rudimentaires d\u2019une perceuse puis d\u2019une pompe \u00e0 engrenages.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cC\u2019est un moment fort du cours pour eux,\u201d explique le Premier ma\u00eetre de 2e classe (pm 2) Desmond Pye, l\u2019un du petit nombre des instruisant Techniciens de materiaux. \u201cIls \u00e9taient absolument \u00e9poustoufl\u00e9s de voir \u00e0 quel point c\u2019\u00e9tait int\u00e9ressant .\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Il s\u2019efforce de transmettre cet int\u00e9r\u00eat aux \u00e9l\u00e8ves car la MRC a une p\u00e9nurie de techniciens. Le pm 2 Pye ne compte que quatorze Techniciens de materiaux dans les Forces maritimes de l'Atlantique. \u00c7a repr\u00e9sente l\u2019ensemble du groupe dans lequel sont selectionn\u00e9s les instructeurs, les d\u00e9ploiements et toutes les t\u00e2ches n\u00e9cessitant leur expertise unique. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Les Techniciens de materiaux demeurent indispensables \u00e0 bord des navires de MRC. Lorsqu\u2019une pi\u00e8ce d\u2019equipement tombe en panne en mer et il y a aucun replacement sous la main, le repli est le compagne du navire et les comp\u00e9tences que ses membres peuvent apporter.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le pm 2 Pye l'a v\u00e9cu directement. \u00c0 l\u2019automne 2023, \u00e0 bord du Navire canadien de Sa Majest\u00e9 <\/span>Montr\u00e9al<\/span><\/i> au large de la Floride, l\u2019une des deux usines de dessalement est tomb\u00e9e en panne \u00e0 cause d\u2019un piston cass\u00e9. Priv\u00e9 de la capacit\u00e9 de produire de l\u2019eau douce, l\u2019\u00e9quipe a d\u00fb interrompre la mission et passer une semaine au port en attendant une pi\u00e8ce de rechange.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLe Chef m\u00e9canicien au moment connaissait mes comp\u00e9tences en m\u00e9canique,\u201d a racont\u00e9 le pm 2 Pye. \u201cIl a parl\u00e9 en ma faveur et a dit, \u201cj\u2019ai un machiniste qui peut fabriquer cette pi\u00e8ce.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Les autres marins ont couvert son quart de garde pour qu\u2019il puisse travailler toute la nuit. Au petit matin, le nouveau piston avait \u00e9t\u00e9 fabriqu\u00e9 puis install\u00e9.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

C\u2019est son espoir que les \u00e9l\u00e8ves d\u00e9veloppent la m\u00eame assurance manuelle, en commen\u00e7ant avec le cours d\u2019entra\u00eenement. Les pi\u00e8ces coul\u00e9es par les \u00e9l\u00e8ves \u00e0 la fonderie de Lunenburg constituent la base des deux machines op\u00e9rationnels: une perceuse et une pompe \u00e0 engrenages. Une fois les moulages refroidissent, les \u00e9l\u00e8ves les apporteront au atelier d\u2019usinage de l\u2019EFN(A) o\u00f9 ils les al\u00e9seront puis les fileteront pour les int\u00e9grer \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9quipement fonctionnel.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLa pompe \u00e0 engrenages qu\u2019ils fabriquent ici est capable de pomper une chaudi\u00e8re de 45 gallons d\u2019eau en seulement 30 secondes,\u201d a dit le pm 2 Pye. \u201cIl ne fabriquent pas seulement des goujons et des \u00e9crous; ils font un produit op\u00e9rationnel.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le cours typiquement dipl\u00f4me trois \u00e0 six machinistes qualifi\u00e9s sur une cohorte de douze. Le m\u00e9tier exige la patience, la pr\u00e9cision et une forte attention aux d\u00e9tails puis il faut que les \u00e9l\u00e8ves soient pr\u00eats \u00e0 investir un temps consid\u00e9rable au d\u00e9veloppement de ces comp\u00e9tences. Les candidats les plus marqu\u00e9s de succ\u00e8s sont souvent ceux qui d\u00e9couvrent un int\u00e9r\u00eat v\u00e9ritable \u00e0 la machinerie et qui rel\u00e8vent le d\u00e9fi de ma\u00eetriser le m\u00e9tier.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le pm 2 Pye a dit qu\u2019il voudrait voir les \u00e9l\u00e8ves recevoir plus d\u2019exp\u00e9rience directe avec les tours et les fraiseuses, semblable \u00e0 la formation de tois mois qu\u2019il a suivie en revanche aux quatres semaines que les \u00e9l\u00e8ve re\u00e7oivent en ce jour. Cet temps extra, il croit, aide les \u00e9l\u00e8ves \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper les comp\u00e9tences et la passion requises pour une carri\u00e8re qui ne ressemble \u00e0 rien d'autre dans la MRC. Selon lui, un Technicien de materiaux peut \u00eatre la derni\u00e8re ligne de d\u00e9fense du navire contre les d\u00e9faillances op\u00e9rationnelles.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJ\u2019ai eu des capitaines et le reste de l\u2019atelier d\u2019usinage qui me regardant travailler les machines \u00e0 diff\u00e9rents moments de ma carri\u00e8re,\u201d a dit le pm 2 Pye. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLes navires de guerre sont con\u00e7us pour bouger, combattre et flotter. Les ing\u00e9nieurs s\u2019occupent de deux ou trois de ces aspects. Avoir un Sp\u00e9cialiste de machinerie \u00e0 bord du navire augmente la capacit\u00e9 de garder le b\u00e2timent en mer plus longtemps, avec le maximum d\u2019\u00e9quipement op\u00e9rationnel requis.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Au pr\u00e9sent, le pm 2 Pye et ses coll\u00e8gues effectuent des rotations entre les postes d\u2019instructeur, enseignent les cours et esp\u00e8rent \u00e0 \u00e9veiller l'int\u00e9r\u00eat pour l\u2019un des m\u00e9tiers les plus uniques de la MRC. <\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
