La derni\u00e8re corvette de classe Flower au monde, le Navire canadien de Sa Majest\u00e9 (NCSM) Sackville K181, a \u00e9t\u00e9 remise en service \u00e0 la Marine royale canadienne (MRC) le 15 mai, 85 ans jour pour jour apr\u00e8s sa mise \u00e0 l'eau.<\/p>\n

Cette remise en service marque une \u00e9tape historique pour un navire qui a autrefois combattu les sous-marins dans les eaux glac\u00e9es de l'Atlantique Nord. Il s'agit d'une reconnaissance symbolique de l'importance continue du Sackville pour la MRC.<\/p>\n

\u00ab L'id\u00e9e est de reconna\u00eetre le patrimoine et la culture de la MRC en remettant le navire au go\u00fbt du jour gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 cette mise en service honorifique, et de mettre davantage l'accent sur notre histoire en tant que marine \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le premier ma\u00eetre de deuxi\u00e8me classe (PM 2) Adam Yardy, actuel capitaine d'armes du NCSM Sackville.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le Sackville sert de m\u00e9morial naval du Canada et de mus\u00e9e flottant sur le front de mer d'Halifax. Il est g\u00e9r\u00e9 par le Fonds comm\u00e9moratif de la Marine canadienne, l'organisation \u00e0 but non lucratif qui supervise le navire depuis 1982.<\/p>\n

Tout comme le NCSM Haida \u00e0 Hamilton, qui est \u00e9galement pr\u00e9serv\u00e9 en tant que mus\u00e9e et sert de navire amiral de la MRC, le Sackville conservera ses fonctions comm\u00e9moratives et \u00e9ducatives. Le Fonds comm\u00e9moratif de la Marine canadienne continuera \u00e0 g\u00e9rer le navire.<\/p>\n

Bien que le navire poursuive ses activit\u00e9s r\u00e9guli\u00e8res, le PM 2 Yardy esp\u00e8re que cette remise en service renforcera le lien entre le NCSM Sackville et la MRC d'aujourd'hui, et encouragera les marins \u00e0 s'int\u00e9resser \u00e0 l'histoire de leur marine.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dans le cadre de son r\u00f4le de m\u00e9morial naval, le Sackville participe \u00e9galement \u00e0 des c\u00e9r\u00e9monies comm\u00e9moratives, y compris \u00e0 des c\u00e9r\u00e9monies d'inhumation de cendres en mer, comme ce fut le cas lors des comm\u00e9morations de la bataille de l'Atlantique de cette ann\u00e9e, le 3 mai.<\/p>\n

Ce matin-l\u00e0, le Sackville a \u00e9t\u00e9 remorqu\u00e9 dans les eaux au large du parc Point Pleasant, \u00e0 Halifax, avec \u00e0 son bord les restes incin\u00e9r\u00e9s de 23 marins qui avaient demand\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00eatre enterr\u00e9s en mer.<\/p>\n

Un \u00e0 un, les proches des d\u00e9funts se sont avanc\u00e9s pour d\u00e9poser les cendres sur une planche de c\u00e9r\u00e9monie, tandis qu'un aum\u00f4nier pronon\u00e7ait les derni\u00e8res pri\u00e8res.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pour ceux qui n'ont pas pu assister \u00e0 la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie, le PM 2 Yardy a lu l'histoire de la vie des d\u00e9funts. Les d\u00e9pouilles ont ensuite \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9pos\u00e9es en mer.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lanc\u00e9 le 15 mai 1941, le Sackville est l'une des 122 corvettes construites dans les chantiers navals canadiens pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Les navires \u00e9taient charg\u00e9s de prot\u00e9ger les convois de nourriture, de carburant et de munitions qui traversaient l'Atlantique pour se rendre au Royaume-Uni.<\/p>\n

L'engagement le plus m\u00e9morable du navire a eu lieu en ao\u00fbt 1942, lorsqu'il a combattu trois U-boote en 24 heures, en mettant deux d'entre eux hors d'\u00e9tat de nuire. Gravement endommag\u00e9 par une torpille en septembre 1943, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 converti en navire-\u00e9cole et a ensuite servi de navire civil de recherche oc\u00e9anographique.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Retir\u00e9 du service en 1982, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 achet\u00e9 par le Naval Trust l'ann\u00e9e suivante et restaur\u00e9 dans sa configuration de 1944.
