Un sauvetage en bord de route, un travail technique essentiel lors d\u2019une op\u00e9ration antidrogue dans les Cara\u00efbes et un r\u00f4le cl\u00e9 dans la formation de la prochaine g\u00e9n\u00e9ration ont permis \u00e0 un membre de recevoir le prix du marin de l\u2019ann\u00e9e 2025, ainsi qu\u2019une promotion de grade.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lors d\u2019une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie \u00e0 bord du Navire canadien de Sa Majest\u00e9 (NCSM)\u00a0<\/span>Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rick Rolette<\/span><\/i>\u00a0le 26 mars, le matelot-chef Ryan Smith a \u00e9t\u00e9 nomm\u00e9 marin de l\u2019ann\u00e9e de la Flotte canadienne de l\u2019Atlantique. La c\u00e9r\u00e9monie a pris une tournure inattendue lorsque le Matc Smith a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 promu ma\u00eetre de 2e classe (M 2) devant sa famille, ses amis et ses camarades d\u2019\u00e9quipage.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab C\u2019\u00e9tait vraiment une surprise \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le M 2 Smith, en revenant sur cette double reconnaissance. \u00ab Les r\u00e9compenses ne sont pas quelque chose que je vise habituellement, mais je suis tr\u00e8s reconnaissant que le travail que j\u2019ai accompli ait \u00e9t\u00e9 reconnu. \u00bb<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ce travail a notamment d\u00e9but\u00e9 par un sauvetage survenu lors de son trajet matinal. Alors qu\u2019il se rendait au travail, le M 2 Smith a aper\u00e7u un v\u00e9hicule renvers\u00e9 qui fumait et laissait \u00e9chapper du carburant. Il s\u2019est rapidement arr\u00eat\u00e9 et s\u2019est pr\u00e9cipit\u00e9 pour aider une femme coinc\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Je me suis senti oblig\u00e9 de m\u2019arr\u00eater pour voir comment elle allait \u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9. \u00ab Elle h\u00e9sitait un peu \u00e0 sortir, alors je l\u2019ai aid\u00e9e \u00e0 se d\u00e9gager de cette situation dangereuse. \u00bb<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le commodore (Cmdre) Jacob French, commandant de la Flotte canadienne de l\u2019Atlantique, a remis le prix du marin de l\u2019ann\u00e9e et s\u2019est dit \u00ab ravi \u00bb des actions du M 2 Smith, tant dans la communaut\u00e9 qu\u2019en uniforme.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L\u2019une de ces qualit\u00e9s est la comp\u00e9tence technique du M 2 Smith, qui s\u2019est av\u00e9r\u00e9e essentielle lors de l\u2019op\u00e9ration CARIBBE \u00e0 bord du NCSM\u00a0<\/span>Harry DeWolf<\/span><\/i>. En tant que m\u00e9canicien du pont sup\u00e9rieur, il \u00e9tait responsable de l\u2019entretien des petites embarcations du navire \u2014 des embarcations essentielles \u00e0 la mission, utilis\u00e9es pour intercepter les trafiquants de drogue. Il a indiqu\u00e9 que ce d\u00e9ploiement a \u00e9t\u00e9 la p\u00e9riode la plus charg\u00e9e de sa vie, maintenant les embarcations en \u00e9tat de marche malgr\u00e9 une utilisation intensive en mer agit\u00e9e.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Une nuit, il a agi comme m\u00e9canicien \u00e0 bord d\u2019une embarcation lanc\u00e9e \u00e0 la poursuite d\u2019un navire soup\u00e7onn\u00e9 de trafic de drogue.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Nous avons \u00e9t\u00e9 mis \u00e0 l\u2019eau de nuit; il faisait compl\u00e8tement noir. Nous nous sommes \u00e9quip\u00e9s de nos gilets pare-balles\u2026 et nous les avons poursuivis \u00bb, se souvient-il. \u00ab Je ressentais une grande fiert\u00e9 \u00e0 les maintenir en service, car si ces embarcations ne fonctionnaient pas, nous ne pouvions pas faire notre travail. \u00bb<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L\u2019engagement du M 2 Smith \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper les comp\u00e9tences de ses coll\u00e8gues a \u00e9galement contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 sa s\u00e9lection comme marin de l\u2019ann\u00e9e. Apr\u00e8s son d\u00e9ploiement \u00e0 bord du\u00a0<\/span>Harry DeWolf<\/span><\/i>, il a servi comme ma\u00eetre d\u2019entra\u00eenement \u00e0 bord du NCSM\u00a0<\/span>Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rick Rolette<\/span><\/i>. Son mentorat a permis \u00e0 plusieurs marins d\u2019obtenir des qualifications cl\u00e9s.<\/span><\/p>\n

Il sert actuellement \u00e0 terre comme instructeur \u00e0 la Division du contr\u00f4le des dommages de l\u2019\u00c9cole navale de l\u2019Atlantique, o\u00f9 il appr\u00e9cie transmettre ses connaissances aux nouvelles recrues.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le Cmdre French a remerci\u00e9 le M 2 Smith au nom de la Marine royale canadienne, le qualifiant de \u00ab tr\u00e8s m\u00e9ritant \u00bb tant pour le prix que pour la promotion.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pour le M 2 Smith, qui affirme se contenter de laisser son travail parler de lui-m\u00eame, cette reconnaissance constitue un couronnement inattendu \u00e0 une ann\u00e9e de service bien remplie et satisfaisante.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He was recognized for outstanding leadership, professionalism, and dedication to duty, highlighted by his heroic actions at a civilian motor vehicle accident, where he entered a dangerous rollover scene with leaking fuel to rescue an injured person. His calm judgement and quick response helped prevent further injury or loss of life. Smith also played a key role in maintaining operational readiness during Op CARIBBE aboard HMCS Harry DeWolf, and as Training Petty Officer on FRR, he mentored sailors toward achieving critical engineering qualifications. He continues to support and positively engage with FRR\u2019s Northern affiliated community, reflecting the very best of the Royal Canadian Navy.
