Trentecinq ans apr\u00e8s la fin de la guerre du Golfe Persique, des Canadiens se sont r\u00e9unis \u00e0 Halifax, en Nouvelle\u00c9cosse, pour rendre hommage aux hommes et aux femmes qui ont servi lors de l\u2019Op\u00e9ration FRICTION. Les activit\u00e9s, tenues dans le cadre de l\u2019Op\u00e9ration DISTINCTION - 35e anniversaire de la fin de la guerre du Golfe Persique, ont rassembl\u00e9 des v\u00e9t\u00e9rans, des membres des Forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes (FAC) en service, des familles et des partenaires communautaires afin de souligner un chapitre de l\u2019histoire militaire du Canada qui demeure important aujourd\u2019hui.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pour les v\u00e9t\u00e9rans ayant particip\u00e9 aux activit\u00e9s comm\u00e9moratives, il s\u2019agissait d\u2019une occasion de renouer des liens, de partager des souvenirs et de constater de visu que leur service n\u2019a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 oubli\u00e9. Pour les membres actifs des FAC, c\u2019\u00e9tait une opportunit\u00e9 de se tenir aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de celles et ceux qui ont contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 fa\u00e7onner la force moderne. Quant \u00e0 la grande communaut\u00e9 d\u2019Halifax, ce fut un moment de r\u00e9flexion sur les Canadiens d\u00e9ploy\u00e9s dans la r\u00e9gion du Golfe en 1990 et 1991, dont plusieurs provenaient de bases de la c\u00f4te Est et d\u2019unit\u00e9s navales locales.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Les comm\u00e9morations ont d\u00e9but\u00e9 par une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de d\u00e9p\u00f4t de couronnes \u00e0 la filiale 142 de la L\u00e9gion royale canadienne \u00e0 Fairview. Suivant le protocole comm\u00e9moratif traditionnel, des dignitaires, des v\u00e9t\u00e9rans, des membres des Forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes et des membres du public se sont rassembl\u00e9s au c\u00e9notaphe pour souligner le 35e anniversaire de l\u2019op\u00e9ration FRICTION et la fin de la guerre du Golfe Persique.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nement comprenait des allocutions officielles, une participation c\u00e9r\u00e9moniale et le d\u00e9p\u00f4t de couronnes par des repr\u00e9sentants du gouvernement du Canada, du lieutenant-gouverneur de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse, de responsables locaux, des FAC, de la L\u00e9gion royale canadienne et des v\u00e9t\u00e9rans de la guerre du Golfe Persique. Les membres de la communaut\u00e9 \u00e9taient invit\u00e9s \u00e0 assister \u00e0 la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie, qui offrait \u00e9galement des occasions de photos et d\u2019\u00e9changes avec les v\u00e9t\u00e9rans et les dignitaires \u00e0 l\u2019issue des proc\u00e9dures officielles. Chaque couronne symbolisait l\u2019engagement collectif \u00e0 honorer le service de celles et ceux qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9ploy\u00e9s dans le Golfe.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L\u2019activit\u00e9 principale de la fin de semaine a \u00e9t\u00e9 le d\u00e9fil\u00e9 naval et a\u00e9rien du dimanche \u00e0 l\u2019arsenal CSM, tenu le 1er mars 2026. Le port d\u2019Halifax a toujours entretenu un lien \u00e9troit avec l\u2019histoire militaire canadienne, et ce cadre constituait un hommage tout d\u00e9sign\u00e9 pour les personnes ayant servi en mer, dans les airs et sur le terrain durant la guerre du Golfe.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Alors que la foule se rassemblait sur le quai NJ, la garde c\u00e9r\u00e9moniale des FAC prenait position et la Musique Stadacona se pr\u00e9parait \u00e0 jouer. L\u2019arriv\u00e9e des dignitaires a \u00e9t\u00e9 soulign\u00e9e par les honneurs traditionnels, mais l\u2019attention demeurait r\u00e9solument tourn\u00e9e vers les v\u00e9t\u00e9rans qui observaient les navires de la Marine royale canadienne d\u00e9filer devant le quai en signe de salut. Le d\u00e9fil\u00e9 a\u00e9rien a ajout\u00e9 une dimension suppl\u00e9mentaire \u00e0 l\u2019hommage\u202f: les a\u00e9ronefs effectuant le survol rappelaient aux v\u00e9t\u00e9rans les op\u00e9rations a\u00e9riennes qui ont jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le majeur durant la guerre du Golfe.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c0 la suite du d\u00e9fil\u00e9 naval et a\u00e9rien \u00e0 la jet\u00e9e NJ, les comm\u00e9morations se sont poursuivies au NCSM Scotian, o\u00f9 v\u00e9t\u00e9rans, dignitaires et invit\u00e9s se sont r\u00e9unis pour la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie officielle. Le programme au Scotian comprenait des allocutions officielles et des prestations musicales. La c\u00e9r\u00e9monie a offert aux v\u00e9t\u00e9rans, aux membres actifs des FAC et aux invit\u00e9s l\u2019occasion de r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 l\u2019importance de la guerre du Golfe et \u00e0 la contribution du Canada sur la sc\u00e8ne internationale.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Des membres actifs des FAC se tenaient c\u00f4te \u00e0 c\u00f4te avec des v\u00e9t\u00e9rans de la guerre du golfe durant le programme officiel, aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s des dignitaires et des invit\u00e9s, dans un moment commun de souvenir. L\u2019accent est demeur\u00e9 sur l\u2019hommage rendu \u00e0 celles et ceux qui ont servi et sur la reconnaissance de l\u2019importance de cet anniversaire, la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie offrant un cadre respectueux pour une r\u00e9flexion collective sur la contribution canadienne durant la guerre du Golfe.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L\u2019op\u00e9ration DISTINCTION vise \u00e0 honorer l\u2019histoire militaire canadienne tout en pla\u00e7ant les v\u00e9t\u00e9rans au c\u0153ur du r\u00e9cit. Les activit\u00e9s tenues \u00e0 Halifax ont pleinement atteint cet objectif. Chaque moment de la fin de semaine, du d\u00e9p\u00f4t de couronnes au passage naval, \u00e9tait consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 reconna\u00eetre les personnes qui ont r\u00e9pondu \u00e0 l\u2019appel du Canada durant la guerre du Golfe et \u00e0 souligner l\u2019impact qu\u2019elles ont eu sur les FAC et sur la contribution du Canada \u00e0 la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 mondiale.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cet anniversaire ne visait pas \u00e0 retracer l\u2019ensemble de l\u2019histoire du conflit, mais plut\u00f4t \u00e0 mettre en lumi\u00e8re les personnes qui ont servi\u202f: leur professionnalisme, leur d\u00e9vouement et leur pr\u00e9sence continue dans nos communaut\u00e9s. Il s\u2019agissait de veiller \u00e0 ce que les Canadiens se rappellent que des milliers de membres des FAC ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9ploy\u00e9s durant la guerre du Golfe et que leur service a fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 les FAC modernes de mani\u00e8re significative.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c0 la fin de la fin de semaine, un message s\u2019est impos\u00e9 clairement\u202f: le Canada se souvient de ses v\u00e9t\u00e9rans de la guerre du Golfe, et les FAC continuent de marcher \u00e0 leurs c\u00f4t\u00e9s.
