Un nouveau monument \u00e9rig\u00e9 \u00e0 Halifax rend hommage \u00e0 une alliance du temps de guerre qui a contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 la victoire dans la bataille de l\u2019Atlantique et a forg\u00e9 un lien durable entre le Canada et la Pologne.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le 27 septembre, des repr\u00e9sentants militaires et gouvernementaux des deux pays se sont joints aux membres de la communaut\u00e9 polonaise d\u2019Halifax \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur du Mus\u00e9e canadien de l\u2019immigration du quai 21 pour l\u2019inauguration officielle.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On peut y lire, en anglais, en fran\u00e7ais et en polonais: En hommage aux marins de la marine polonaise et de la flotte marchande polonaise qui ont servi pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et \u00e0 ceux qui ont donn\u00e9 leur vie lors de la bataille de l\u2019Atlantique (1939-1945). \u00c0 la m\u00e9moire de la fraternit\u00e9 d\u2019armes polono-canadienne.<\/p>\n

La commodore Beth Vallis, commandante de la R\u00e9serve navale, s\u2019est adress\u00e9e aux participants en soulignant que ce sont les marins de ce qui \u00e9tait alors connu sous le nom de R\u00e9serve des volontaires de la Marine royale canadienne qui ont form\u00e9 le noyau de la force maritime du Canada pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Les marins canadiens, souvent jeunes et loin de chez eux, se sont retrouv\u00e9s c\u00f4te \u00e0 c\u00f4te avec des camarades polonais \u00bb, a-t-elle d\u00e9clar\u00e9. \u00ab Cette fraternit\u00e9 d\u2019armes transcendait la langue et la nationalit\u00e9. Elle s\u2019est construite sur des valeurs, des sacrifices et des espoirs communs. \u00bb<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Ce monument comm\u00e9more un chapitre remarquable de notre histoire commune. \u00bb<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Entre 1939 et 1945, la marine polonaise a escort\u00e9 pr\u00e8s de 800 convois et effectu\u00e9 plus de 1 000 patrouilles de combat \u00e0 travers l\u2019Atlantique. Les navires polonais ont sauv\u00e9 des survivants, d\u00e9fendu des convois et pris part \u00e0 des moments cl\u00e9s de la guerre, notamment la poursuite, en 1941, du cuirass\u00e9 allemand Bismarck par le destroyer polonais Piorun, ainsi que le sauvetage de 85 soldats canadiens par le navire \u015al\u0105zak \u00e0 la suite du raid de Dieppe.<\/p>\n

L\u2019ambassadeur de Pologne au Canada, Witold Dzielski, a \u00e9voqu\u00e9 la bravoure de ceux qui ont servi loin de leur patrie occup\u00e9e.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Ils ont donn\u00e9 leur vie pour le monde auquel ils croyaient, pour la Pologne qu\u2019ils r\u00eavaient de retrouver et pour la cause alli\u00e9e de la libert\u00e9 \u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Il a \u00e9galement soulign\u00e9 l\u2019h\u00e9ritage laiss\u00e9 par la guerre. Plus de 64 000 ressortissants polonais ont immigr\u00e9 au Canada apr\u00e8s 1945, nombre d\u2019entre eux arrivant par le quai 21. Parmi eux se trouvaient d\u2019anciens marins et marins marchands, des r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s et d\u2019autres personnes qui avaient endur\u00e9 les difficult\u00e9s de la guerre dans leur pays.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L\u2019ambassadeur a \u00e9galement \u00e9tabli un lien entre le pass\u00e9 et le pr\u00e9sent, soulignant la coop\u00e9ration continue entre le Canada et la Pologne. Il a rendu hommage au Canada pour sa pr\u00e9sence militaire en Europe centrale et orientale dans le cadre de l\u2019op\u00e9ration REASSURANCE, qui a vu des membres des Forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes se d\u00e9ployer en Pologne, en plus du contingent actuellement pr\u00e9sent en Lettonie.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Les gouvernements du Canada et de la Pologne ont \u00e9galement annonc\u00e9 un nouveau partenariat strat\u00e9gique en ao\u00fbt dernier, avec des plans pour approfondir les liens dans les domaines du commerce, de la d\u00e9fense et de la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
