Le premier et unique officier de la Marine royale canadienne (MRC) \u00e0 avoir command\u00e9 l\u2019Aviation canadienne a \u00e9t\u00e9 honor\u00e9 pour les services qu\u2019il a rendus au pays tout au long de sa vie.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le lieutenant-g\u00e9n\u00e9ral (Lg\u00e9n) (\u00e0 la retraite) Larry Ashley a \u00e9t\u00e9 honor\u00e9 lors d\u2019une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie au Mus\u00e9e de l\u2019aviation de Shearwater le 9 ao\u00fbt, o\u00f9 des amis et des membres de sa famille se sont r\u00e9unis aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de hauts dirigeants pour rendre hommage \u00e0 sa brillante carri\u00e8re. Parmi les personnes pr\u00e9sentes se trouvaient le ministre de la D\u00e9fense Bill McGuinty, le vice-amiral Angus Topshee, commandant de la MRC, la lieutenant-g\u00e9n\u00e9rale Jamie Speiser-Blanchet, commandante de l\u2019Aviation canadienne, et le lieutenant-gouverneur de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse, l\u2019honorable Mike Savage.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cet hommage s\u2019inscrivait dans le cadre du programme H\u00e9ros de chez nous de Parcs Canada, qui met en lumi\u00e8re les Canadiens dont les contributions militaires ou civiles ont laiss\u00e9 une marque durable. Depuis son lancement en 2015, le programme a pris de l\u2019ampleur et a permis d\u2019honorer plus de 140 personnes \u00e0 travers le pays.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

La carri\u00e8re du Lg\u00e9n Ashley s\u2019est \u00e9tendue sur plus de trois d\u00e9cennies et comprend des contributions importantes \u00e0 la communaut\u00e9 de l\u2019aviation maritime du Canada. Aspirant de marine devenu pilote d\u2019h\u00e9licopt\u00e8re, le Lg\u00e9n Ashley a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9dit\u00e9 d\u2019avoir aid\u00e9 \u00e0 lancer l\u2019utilisation d\u2019h\u00e9licopt\u00e8res embarqu\u00e9s, jetant les bases d\u2019une capacit\u00e9 a\u00e9rienne maritime qui reste centrale pour les op\u00e9rations navales aujourd\u2019hui. Il a servi comme pilote \u00e0 bord de nombreux navires de la MRC et a m\u00eame contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 la mise au point du syst\u00e8me \u00ab Beartrap \u00bb, utilis\u00e9 pour faire atterrir en toute s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des h\u00e9licopt\u00e8res sur des navires de la taille d\u2019un destroyer en mer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L'\u00e9v\u00e9nement a eu lieu \u00e0 la 12e Escadre Shearwater, o\u00f9 le Lg\u00e9n ( \u00e0 la retraite) Ashley a \u00e9t\u00e9 affect\u00e9 \u00e0 de nombreux moments cl\u00e9s de sa carri\u00e8re.

Il a ensuite command\u00e9 deux escadrons a\u00e9ronavals avant d\u2019\u00eatre nomm\u00e9 commandant de la base qui s\u2019appelait alors la Base des Forces canadiennes (BFC) Shearwater. Il a occup\u00e9 des postes de haut niveau au sein du commandement a\u00e9rien \u00e0 Winnipeg et a contribu\u00e9 aux efforts de l\u2019OTAN en Europe, en travaillant comme gestionnaire de programme pour la mise en service du nouveau syst\u00e8me a\u00e9roport\u00e9 de d\u00e9tection et de contr\u00f4le. Son accession au poste de commandant de l\u2019Aviation canadienne en 1986 demeure la seule fois o\u00f9 un ancien officier de marine a occup\u00e9 cette fonction.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Les dirigeants actuels des Forces arm\u00e9es canadiennes ont d\u00e9crit ses r\u00e9alisations comme \u00e9tant \u00e0 la fois novatrices et durables. Le Vam Topshee a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que le service du Lg\u00e9n Ashley \u00ab a ouvert de nouvelles voies et jet\u00e9 des ponts durables entre nos forces navales et a\u00e9riennes \u00bb, tandis que la Lg\u00e9n Speiser-Blanchet a soulign\u00e9 son \u00ab impact durable sur la communaut\u00e9 des h\u00e9licopt\u00e8res maritimes et sur l\u2019aviation navale. \u00bb<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

En dehors de l\u2019uniforme, le Lg\u00e9n Ashley a consacr\u00e9 des d\u00e9cennies de son temps au service public. Il a soutenu de longue date le Mus\u00e9e de l\u2019aviation de Shearwater, a \u00e9t\u00e9 l\u2019un des directeurs fondateurs de la Fondation du Mus\u00e9e des sciences et de la technologie du Canada et a \u00e9t\u00e9 membre du conseil d\u2019administration de Bytown Brigantine, qui offre des possibilit\u00e9s de formation \u00e0 la voile \u00e0 des jeunes d\u00e9favoris\u00e9s. Il a \u00e9galement re\u00e7u plusieurs distinctions nationales, notamment le titre de commandeur de l\u2019Ordre du m\u00e9rite militaire et les m\u00e9dailles d\u2019or et de diamant du jubil\u00e9 de la Reine.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le Lg\u00e9n Ashley a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 qu\u2019il \u00e9tait profond\u00e9ment \u00e9mu d\u2019\u00eatre ainsi reconnu.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
