Le matin du 10 juillet 2013, le premier ma\u00eetre de deuxi\u00e8me classe (PM 2) Mark Burnett se rendait au travail en voiture \u00e0 partir de Lawrencetown lorsqu\u2019il a \u00e9t\u00e9 heurt\u00e9 et tu\u00e9 par un conducteur en \u00e9tat d\u2019\u00e9bri\u00e9t\u00e9.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Aujourd\u2019hui, le PM 2 Burnett est honor\u00e9 par un nouveau banc comm\u00e9moratif install\u00e9 \u00e0 Stadacona, \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur de l\u2019installation consolid\u00e9e d\u2019instruction en matelotage (S-120). D\u00e9voil\u00e9 lors d\u2019une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie le 10 juillet, le banc rend hommage \u00e0 sa vie et \u00e0 son souvenir, tout en rappelant avec force les dangers de la conduite avec facult\u00e9s affaiblies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le m\u00e9morial a \u00e9t\u00e9 rendu possible gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un partenariat entre Les M\u00e8res contre l\u2019alcool au volant (MADD Canada)et la police r\u00e9gionale d\u2019Halifa, avec le soutien de la Base des Forces canadiennes (BFC) Halifax. Le banc de granit noir est grav\u00e9 d\u2019une d\u00e9dicace au PM 2 Burnett et pr\u00e9sente son portrait \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 du logo de MADD.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le banc fait face \u00e0 l\u2019ancienne \u00c9cole canadienne de g\u00e9nie naval, o\u00f9 le PM 2 Burnett occupait le poste de chef auxiliaire au moment de son d\u00e9c\u00e8s.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Cela me fait chaud au c\u0153ur. C\u2019est l\u2019endroit id\u00e9al pour l\u2019immortaliser \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Andrea Burnett, la veuve du PM 2 Burnett, lors de l\u2019inauguration.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Elle a d\u00e9crit son mari comme un plaisantin dot\u00e9 d\u2019un grand sens de l\u2019humour, qui apportait du bonheur \u00e0 tous ceux qui l\u2019entouraient et remontait toujours le moral de ses coll\u00e8gues, peu importe o\u00f9 il servait.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Andrea a expliqu\u00e9 que les jeunes marins \u00e9taient souvent intimid\u00e9s lorsqu\u2019ils rencontraient le PM 2 Burnett pour la premi\u00e8re fois, en raison de sa grande taille et de sa voix forte, mais qu\u2019ils se rendaient rapidement compte \u00e0 quel point il \u00e9tait chaleureux et accueillant.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Il \u00e9tait la m\u00e8re du mess\u2026 il vous aurait donn\u00e9 la chemise sur son dos \u00bb, a-t-elle racont\u00e9, se souvenant de l\u2019impact de son mari sur ses camarades marins. Ces derniers l\u2019appelaient \u00ab l\u2019homme le plus gentil de l\u2019OTAN. \u00bb<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Son altruisme s\u2019est poursuivi au-del\u00e0 de sa carri\u00e8re militaire. Apr\u00e8s l\u2019accident de 2013, malgr\u00e9 ses blessures graves, Andrea a appris que son mari avait exhort\u00e9 les premiers intervenants \u00e0 venir en aide en priorit\u00e9 aux occupants de l\u2019autre v\u00e9hicule. Son geste a permis de sauver la vie d\u2019une jeune femme pr\u00e9sente sur les lieux de l\u2019accident.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le d\u00e9voilement du monument s\u2019est d\u00e9roul\u00e9 en pr\u00e9sence de la famille du PM 2 Burnett, d\u2019anciens amis et coll\u00e8gues, ainsi que de membres de la section r\u00e9gionale de MADD \u00e0 Halifax.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anissa MacLeod, pr\u00e9sidente locale de MADD, \u00e9tait \u00e9galement pr\u00e9sente et a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 qu\u2019elle esp\u00e9rait que le monument \u00ab donne aux gens le temps de s\u2019arr\u00eater et de r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00bb aux cons\u00e9quences de la conduite avec facult\u00e9s affaiblies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le banc en hommage au PM 2 Burnett, install\u00e9 \u00e0 Stadacona, est le sixi\u00e8me du genre \u00e0 \u00eatre inaugur\u00e9 par MADD en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse. Selon MacLeod, ces bancs de granit constituent des hommages permanents pouvant \u00eatre plac\u00e9s \u00e0 des endroits tr\u00e8s visibles, afin de maintenir le co\u00fbt humain de la conduite avec facult\u00e9s affaiblies dans la conscience du public.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Elle a qualifi\u00e9 les collisions comme celle qui a co\u00fbt\u00e9 la vie au PM 2 Burnett de \u00ab pertes tragiques qui sont \u00e9vitables \u00e0 cent pour cent \u00bb, et a soulign\u00e9 l\u2019importance de marquer ces \u00e9v\u00e9nements pour sensibiliser la population.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie, les participants ont pris le temps de partager un repas et de raconter leurs anecdotes pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9es au sujet du PM 2 Burnett. Andrea a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 qu\u2019elle pensait qu\u2019il aurait approuv\u00e9 ce rassemblement \u2013 surtout les histoires racont\u00e9es, mais peut-\u00eatre un peu moins la musique douce.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ab Chaque fois qu\u2019ils se r\u00e9unissaient sur le navire, il fallait qu\u2019il joue Who Let the Dogs Out. Pouvez-vous l\u2019imaginer en train de la faire jouer en ce moment m\u00eame ? C\u2019\u00e9tait \u00e7a, le sens de l\u2019humour de Mark \u00bb, dit-elle en riant.<\/p>\n

Le m\u00e9morial pr\u00e9vu pour le PM 2 Burnett a mis longtemps \u00e0 voir le jour. Sa construction a \u00e9t\u00e9 retard\u00e9e de plusieurs ann\u00e9es en raison d\u2019une p\u00e9nurie de mat\u00e9riaux \u00e0 la suite de la pand\u00e9mie de COVID-19. Ces retards n\u2019ont pas d\u00e9rang\u00e9 Andrea, qui a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 qu\u2019il lui avait fallu des ann\u00e9es pour se sentir \u00e9motionnellement pr\u00eate pour la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
